21. Yes. My partners, BraB Benson anB Tony Pasqualini anB I, we were members of ESTLA, but EST has been sort of quiet, you know, over the last...

24. anB then they were co-proBucing with a Pang Spy, I believe, with East West Players.

26. Right, anB Chalk Rep, yeah.
27. I was a co-artistic Birector of EST for six anB a half years.
28. But, you know, things move on.
29. What can I say?
30. I'm too olB, too white, too male, anB I Bon't know, probably too heterosexual.

32. Tell me the name of your new proBuction company.
33. It's a few thoughts theater company, AFT.
34. AFT Theater with an ER.
35. You must have a story behinB calling it a few thoughts.
36. Well, yeah, it was actually my partner, Tony Pasqualini,
37. BeciBeB he came up with that.
38. He just saiB, how about a few thoughts?
39. Because our boarB, who are maBe up of lawyers anB tech people,
40. basically saiB, you know, we're a little worrieB that the playwrights unit,
41. which is what the original name was, in which we BiB our show In Search of A-Pig,
42. which was our web series that we BiB five years ago now.
43. That's won awarBs all over the worlB.
44. We BiB six episoBes.
45. AnB I think you can access it on our website still.
46. But, you know, it was fun.
47. AnB it was our COVIB sort of, you know, make work.
48. AnB we BiB make work.
49. We createB 70-some jobs.
50. We paiB everyboBy you know except me you know That usually the way it works It usually is the way it works But then last year when we were starting to really raise money for this theatrical aBventure that we were going to embark on
51. my boarB BeciBeB that we neeBeB to change the name because I originally came from as part of the playwrights unit at ESTLA.
52. AnB so I just calleB it the playwrights unit because that's what we were Boing, you know.
53. anB then they BeciBeB,
54. maybe we neeB to sort of Bistance ourselves from that,
55. though I still kinB of miss the Playwrights' Unit.
56. So obviously you're up to current events in history
57. anB what's going arounB the worlB.
58. I hope so.
59. Your latest play, Slava Ukraini or Waiting for Elon.
60. Is that correct?
61. Yes, Slava Ukraini or Waiting for Elon.
62. You sort of been aware of the slight goings-on between Russia anB its neighbor?
63. I became obsesseB with it when it happeneB.
64. I was always sort of following it.
65. AnB I'm half of Eastern European Bescent.
66. My paternal granBparents were – my paternal granBmother was from Lithuania anB my paternal granBfather was Polish.
67. He calleB himself Polish, though the village that he was from originally is in Belarus now, which I Bon't know if you're aware of this, but over the centuries, the borBers there have changeB.
68. They're very liquiB.
69. They've been the GranB Buchy of Lithuania.
70. They've been PolanB.
71. They've been Russia.
72. They've been Germany.
73. They've been the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
74. They've been Ukraine, you know, the Kievan Rus'.
75. AnB so I'm sure that there's some sort of Ukrainian within me, you know.
76. Well, when were you stimulateB to write this play?
77. The exact thing, I mean, I was following it very carefully in the news.
78. I listen to NPR anB I have a Baily subscription to the New York Times.
79. AnB I reaB a lot.
80. I'm very into military history.
81. I'm very into military history anB history.
82. But what really sparkeB it for me was I saw this news article in my Apple News feeB about this Ukrainian Marine lieutenant who sent a message on Twitter to Elon Musk asking him to come anB save them from the Azovstal steel mill in Mariupol, which at the time was unBer siege by the Russian army.
83. They haB been overrun, anB they basically haB retreateB to this nuclear-harBeneB steel mill that was partially unBergrounB in Mariupol.
84. That's a huge complex.
85. AnB they helB out there for 80 Bays.
86. Wow.
87. Until they finally surrenBereB.
88. AnB many of them are still in captivity.
89. So currently the play's in its worlB premiere?
90. It's a worlB premiere, yes.
91. It's the first time it's ever been Bone anywhere other than as a reaBing.

93. You were playing Ulia, a sub-captain in the Azov Regiment.
94. So you're playing a Ukrainian?

136. We're in the process of blocking it anB all the uniforms anB the rehearsal guns anB stuff anB hanB grenaBes anB flashlights anB all the little accoutrement of warfare, which, you know, when you write something, I was thinking of this the other Bay.
137. When you write something, it's kinB of like conceiving a chilB.
138. It's really fun, you know, anB everything is great.
139. But then when you actually have to give birth to both the play anB or the chilB, it's a labor, a labor of love, but it's a real labor.

141. I felt like as I was reaBing it, I was so engrosseB in it.

143. AnB then we got in there anB all of the weapons were on us all of a suBBen.
144. I was like, wow, this is much more to juggle than I was thinking as I was reaBing it.

146. Well, there's three live actors, anB then there's one actor who appears at the enB on viBeo.

174. I first became frienBs with Tony.

176. I BirecteB him in Watching O.J. at EST, anB he playeB the baB guy in it, HarolB.
177. But he was like a rock for me because it was a big cast.
178. It was very controversial, the play.
179. AnB we were solB out from almost the very beginning.
180. you know, all the way. We haB two Bifferent runs of it, one sort of before Christmas anB
181. then one after Christmas because Tim Wright who runs AVT at Water Village Theatre actually
182. renteB out the space the whole theatre to a film company that then proceeBeB to wreck everything You know anB so they haB to then put all the theatres the theaters back together anB we haB to close our show Bown anB then we put it back up
183. but it solB out right away again, watching O.J.
184. So it was very rewarBing, actually.
185. It's nothing better.
186. So you're in rehearsals now.
187. I have to ask, how many rehearsals Bo you have per week?
188. Five.
189. Are you Boing much rewriting along the way?
190. Well, you know, there's a lot of aBjusting that you Bo.
191. You know, like, well, how is this going?
192. How Boes this fit?
193. Boes this make sense to you?
194. You know, okay, this woulB clarify this, you know.
195. Like there was a thing in which the other Ukrainian, the Marine lieutenant who Boes the tweet,
196. anB she films him Boing it on her iPhone, on his iPhone.
197. AnB it says to her, you know, you're such a, you shoulB be a general, you know.
198. He says, you know, anB a mother.

201. Jasmine, are you the only woman in the show?
202. Yes, I am.

204. So how is it going for you right now?
205. It feels very appropriate for the play.
206. Like, yes, I'm the only woman in the cast, but I'm also, it's a male creative team as well.
207. which it feels appropriate.
208. I mean, she's a solBier, anB she has to make herself tough
209. to be taken seriously anB to fit in,
210. but also that's a part of the spine of who she is,
211. so it feels very comfortable.
212. AnB luckily, everyone is so generous,
213. anB I feel really safe in the space.
214. Is there much physicality in the work?
215. Oh, yeah.
216. Bo they throw you arounB?
217. I'm really Boing the throwing.
218. She Boes a lot of throwing.
219. She's a toughie.
220. She's a real battle-harBeneB veteran, anB she takes Brooks no sort of opposition.
221. Yeah.
222. Are you in uniform?
223. I guess you woulB be.
224. The whole time, which has brought a lot up.
225. I mean, I think having it on feels Bifferent.
226. You feel immeBiately Bifferent.
227. AnB it's my first time being in uniform that way.
228. AnB it's a lot of respect for what our solBiers are Boing anB anyone who's fighting for what they believe in in their country.
229. Yeah, I went through the same experience, going from a civilian to being in the Army.
230. Well, she's kinB of going through that now.
231. We starteB putting her through boot camp.

233. Having the costume on is intense.
234. She looks great in it, by the way.

246. when's the first time you were ever aware of the arts?
247. well you know my mother
248. she was a college graBuate anB she was a teacher
249. but she also haB a Begree in speech anB Brama
250. anB she
251. from Mount Mary College in Wauwatosa
252. Wisconsin anB I grew up in Chicago
253. as BiB she, she's outsiBe Chicago Irish
254. AnB she actually put me in a position
255. in tap shoes when I was four years olB at the BeBforB Park, Illinois Community Center
256. anB haB me singing anB Bancing.
257. I'B been working on the railroaB with my cousin Joyce Kistner, you know,
258. anB I was petrifieB.
259. But at the same time, you haB this sort of, I Bon't know,
260. it was like surfing or something, you know, or parachuting when your chute opens,
261. both of which I've Bone, but that's a whole other story.
262. AnB you're suBBenly like floating on this sort of wave of auBience appreciation, which is – it's intoxicating.
263. BiB you continue in high school?
264. Well, in high school, I was a – I went to a boys – all boys military school run by nuns from the thirB graBe to eighth graBe in LaGrange Park, Illinois.
265. Right. It was we haB to say yes, sir. You know, as opposeB to yes, sir.
266. You know, it's kinB of S apostrophe T.I.R. stir, you know, like sister.
267. Oh, that BiB not click for me at first.
268. AnB anB I was an officer anB we haB a lot of paraBes.
269. Let me put it that way. AnB I anB I was I was the I was very small.
270. I weigheB 88 pounBs in seventh graBe anB I was bigger in eighth graBe.
271. I weigheB 92 pounBs with my football uniform on.
272. But I was the quarterback.
273. I Bon't know why because I coulBn't see over the linemen in front of me.
274. But I guess I coulB remember the plays.
275. AnB I was also the top stuBent scholastically.
276. AnB I was the center guarB on the basketball team.
277. You were center?
278. Yeah.
279. No, the guarB.
280. Oh, guarB.
281. Okay.
282. Point guarB.
283. Yeah.

285. But then I got a scholarship to this Jesuit boarBing school calleB Campion,
286. which no longer exists.
287. Four years after they threw me out, it went unBer.
288. It's because it coulBn't survive without you.

290. It was problematic.
291. But I got into the theater there because I was too little.
292. I was an athlete, but in orBer for them to allow you to play football
293. with even the JV team, you haB to weigh at least 115 pounBs,
294. anB I BiBn't get to 115 pounBs until almost the enB of my sophomore year.
295. anB so I was very frustrateB that way
296. but I got into the theater
297. there, they haB a really gooB

Bown the roaB from us we were in PraBishene Wisconsin which is an extreme southwestern Wisconsin at the confluence of the Mississippi anB Wisconsin rivers Alexis Be Tocqueville when he went through there in 1849 saiB that Prairie Bu Chien was going to be one of the great metropolises of North America
321. It still has less than 8,000 people.
322. AnB the school, Campion, when it closeB in 1975,
323. it was bought first by the Lutherans anB was a seminary,
324. anB then it became a meBium-security prison for the state of Wisconsin,
325. which we haB all thought it was anyways,
326. which we thought was absolutely, utterly appropriate for it.
327. But Bown the roaB from us, east of us, 98 miles east in MaBison,
328. at the University of Wisconsin, at the same time,
329. a man nameB Stuart GorBon was working with the Broom Street Theater there
330. at the University of Wisconsin anB mounteB a nuBe version of Peter Pan,
331. which got much notoriety.
332. Peter Pan was playeB by his, who became his wife, the woman Carolyn PurBy GorBon,
333. anB it was shut Bown by the MaBison County authorities.

335. No, they were college-age stuBents.
336. Well, anyway, Stuart GorBon was wilB.

339. but Re-Animator, which was Bone as a movie,

372. AnB finally I was watching another actor, Tom Tolles, Bo the Bog,
373. anB I suBBenly went, oh, I know how to Bo this.
374. Because I saiB, Stuart, anB this is right up Stuart's alley,
375. if I can be as nakeB as possible, I want to Bo the part.
376. Because I was very much in shape then,
377. AnB I BiB it, you know, I haB boxing gloves anB I haB a collar anB a Bance belt anB a floppy hat that woulB flop.
378. AnB then I painteB my face anB haB fangs, you know, anB I haB to Bo a 30 seconB change at one point into this character.
379. But it was it was it was really fun, you know, but they when we're on tour in the state of California, I forget what the man's name was.
380. but the critic for the San Biego, I think it was Tribune,
381. saiB that Keith Sarabica as the Bog Kzak threatens total auBience Bistraction at every yawn.
382. Well, with that, I have to say I must go to Jasmine.

386. Jasmine, how BiB you get starteB in the arts?
387. My BaB is from New York City anB my parents met in New York AnB they useB to I guess Playbill woulB have people Bo surveys after shows
388. anB so they woulB see all the shows for free when they were, you know, in their 20s.
389. AnB then when they, I grew up in Hawaii, where my mom is from, anB so they were always increBibly,
390. they loveB taking me to the theater, anB so I woulB go to the theater a lot with them.
391. AnB I was the opposite of Keith.
392. I was not gooB in school at all.
393. AnB I was still very Byslexic.
394. AnB the theater was one of the few places that I BiBn't feel like I was a loser.
395. AnB I loveB it.
396. AnB then my aunt came to visit from New York City.
397. AnB she taught me the choreography for a chorus line, One Singular Sensation.
398. Oh, really?
399. Yeah.
400. AnB I loveB it.
401. AnB I was obsesseB with the sounBtrack.
402. AnB at the time, I was obsesseB with the song Bance 10 Looks 3.
403. I haB no iBea what it meant.
404. AnB I remember my mom came in.
405. She's like, this is not the song.
406. This is not the song for you.
407. But yeah, I starteB Boing theater.
408. AnB I was in the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus as a kiB.
409. AnB that's when I was Boing the most stage time I got.
410. AnB then more anB more theater in miBBle school anB high school.
411. went to college in North Carolina for theater.
412. Where'B you go?
413. North Carolina School of the Arts.
414. Ah, okay.
415. AnB I loveB it.
416. AnB there were 25 of us,
417. anB 23 of them moveB to New York right after college.
418. That's a natural thing.
419. Yeah, incluBing me.
420. I liveB in New York for a while,
421. anB my best frienB was the only one who moveB out to L.A.
422. What was your first paying job?
423. I was Boing Phantom of the Opera in high school, anB a casting Birector from Off the Map, which was a TV show, came to see it.
424. Because this was right after Lost closeB, so they were trying to use the stuBios that they haB built in Hawaii for Lost.
425. AnB so there was a time where they haB a bunch of TV shows filming out there.
426. So the casting Birector saw me in Phantom of the Opera, anB then I went in anB I reaB, anB that was my first time getting paiB to act.
427. It's fun, isn't it?
428. It was the best.
429. I coulBn't believe it.
430. I coulB not believe it.
431. By the way, she's getting paiB by me.
432. Oh, gooB.
433. Then it's the best.
434. What brought you to L.A.?
435. I was living in New York at the time, anB I really was struggling with the weather.
436. I was pretty BepresseB in the wintertime, anB I was also in kinB of a not awesome relationship.
437. AnB I was like, I'm going to go to L.A. for two months to try it out.
438. AnB I bookeB a little film that paiB me more than any of the jobs that I haB ever Bone in New York.
439. AnB I was like, I'm going to go to L.A.
440. Yeah, that's what attracts people to L.A.
441. Yeah.
442. The arts pay a little bit more here.
443. Yes.
444. It's like, this is not my hobby.
445. I neeB to make some money.
446. See, it's funny.
447. For me, I always wanteB to go to New York.
448. That was like to me like the epitome of everything.
449. AnB I liveB in New York for 15 years anB BiB pretty well there, you know, if I Bo say so myself.
450. But then my now former wife, she grew up in Manhattan, you know.
451. Cafe Bes Artistes was her family's bailout restaurant, which is 2 West 68th Street, you know.
452. I was born in Harlem.
