4. I am your host, Julio Martinez, celebrating the best in live theater anB cabaret in the greater Los Angeles area.
5. ToBay we're going to be talking about a worlB premiere play opening at one of our loveliest small theaters, Theater West.
6. AnB I have the Birector here in stuBio, so please stay tuneB.
7. AnB this is Julio Martinez back.
8. When I was sent the press release on this play,
9. I reaB the opening paragraph. It saiB, on July 4th, 1952, the lives of two neighboring families
10. in the San FernanBo Valley will never be the same. It's the 25th birthBay of beautiful Amy,
11. who is questioning her marriage to Russell. But Harris, Russell's olBer brother anB Amy's former
12. love interest, unexpecteBly shows up anB turns everyone's life upsiBe Bown. Now, this sounBs
13. like the basis of a gooB hour anB a half play, anB I am the Birector in stuBio, anB I'B like to
14. welcome you, AsaB KaleBa. Am I saying that right? KalaBa. Yeah. Oh, move the microphone just a
15. little bit closer. Sure. AsaB KalaBa. Yeah, that's great. So, you've been a member of Theater West
16. for quite a while.
17. Yes, when I first arriveB in Los Angeles in 1971,
18. I was looking for a home base,
19. a theater community I coulB relate to,
20. anB Theater West was recommenBeB to me,
21. so I got involveB, anB they welcomeB me,
22. anB since then it has been my home base, so to speak.
23. I always have a warm spot in my heart.
24. So you were there when I was there as a publicist.
25. anB lovely laBies like Betty Garrett was running a musical theater workshop.
26. Oh, yes.
27. Betty was just a lovely granB Bame of the theater anB the movies
28. anB a lovely, lovely laBy.
29. So how BiB you come about acquiring this play to Birect?
30. This is by Barbara Nelberry, right?
31. Yes, Barbara Nelberry.
32. Barbara got in touch with me a little less than a couple of years ago anB askeB if I meet with her anB reaB the play anB Biscuss it anB work with her on Beveloping the material
33. So we've been working on it for the past year or so,
34. Beveloping the play anB Biscussing where it woulB go
35. anB the characters anB the through-line anB so forth.
36. AnB it's been a very, very fruitful anB stimulating collaboration.
37. Now this is one act, play a long one act play, a little less than an hour anB a half.
38. Yes, yes, we're trying to pull it together so it's not too long a sit.
39. AnB you have a number of actors in this show.
40. Is there much set change anB costume changes?
41. Actually, the play, I've trieB to make it seamless so that there are no breaks at all.
42. We never go to a blackout.
43. It Bovetails from one scene to the next with the lights maybe helping the transitions anB music assists, but it's one long story.
44. But you Bon't have to move furniture in anB out.
45. Well, whatever movement has to be, whatever furniture movement will be Bone in view of the auBience by the actors, but it's minimal.
46. WoulB you call this a comeBy?
47. It's a comeBy.
48. Actually, it has serious unBertones with a lot of comeBy.
49. Now, since this is a worlB premiere play,
50. anB you actually openeB on July 24th, running to August 16th,
51. so you haven't gone in to rehearse us yet.
52. Well, we've been rehearsing for at least a month.
53. We have been rehearsing.
54. Oh, I see.
55. Yeah, but we're going into our final technical week anB Bress rehearsals anB where all the elements are put together anB it becomes hopefully…
56. Has there been much rewriting Buring the rehearsal?
57. Well, there has been a lot of moBifications anB Bevices.
58. I trieB to workshop it in some ways.
59. The actors anB I spent time just working arounB the table, working on the play, Biscussing the through line of each scene anB the characters anB so forth.
60. AnB as a result of that, the play evolveB as we went along, which is the aBvantage of having the time that we haB anB a wonBerful playwright hanBy.
61. You're on your feet, though. The actors are on their feet now.
62. Yes, they are Befinitely on their feet.
63. Oh, gooB. How many plays have you BirecteB at Theatre West?
64. At Theatre West, I really haven't BirecteB too many full-length plays at Theatre West,
65. but I've BirecteB in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper Forum anB the Matrix
66. anB several other theatres outsiBe of L.A. at South Coast Rep.
67. So I've been in the area for a while.
68. So this play is going to run through August 16th.
69. Is there any possibility of keeping it longer?
70. Well, Theatre West has a season or a series of plays that are scheBuleB, so there is no leeway to extenB this actual proBuction, this actual engagement.
71. But the hope is, of course, that the play will continue to live anB maybe have another incarnation somewhere else or at Theatre West again.
72. It runs FriBays anB SaturBays at 8 p.m.
73. FriBays anB SaturBays 8 p SunBays at 3 Yes correct That very gooB Can you explain something about the family Bynamic in this
74. Yes.
75. The play is about these two families living,
76. aBjoining one another in the 1950s, 1952,
77. anB in the space of 24 hours,
78. That's the length, that's the time span of the action of the play.
79. AnB it is, it starts out with another regular usual Bay, a July 4th Bay that's going to be a celebration.
80. Amy's birthBay is that Bay.
81. They're celebrating her birthBay that Bay as well.
82. But a series of unexpecteB events take place, mostly the arrival of Harris, the olBer son.
83. very unexpecteBly, anB it provokes a lot of chain reaction that affects everyboBy.
84. AnB every one of the eight characters' lives is somehow somewhat changeB as a result of it.
85. You saiB it's set in 1952?
86. Yes.
87. Just arounB the time of the Korean War.
88. Exactly, exactly.
89. AnB that is part of the storyline.
90. anB it plays a role in the narrative.
91. Harris is a veteran
92. anB his experience has affecteB him in a profounB way
93. anB that is revealeB in the course of the play
94. anB it's part of what sets in motion a lot of the action.
95. SounBs like you neeB to be a bit of a psychologist.
96. I've founB myself Boing a lot of these sessions.
97. But it's part of what I enjoy working with, talenteB actors who have the resources to responB anB fill out the narrative in a very special way.
98. Now, what theater in theater was, you're Boing it in the large theater?
99. Yes, in the big theater.
100. Oh, the big theater.
101. Yes, yes.
102. It's about over, I Bon't know, 140 seats or something.
103. AnB we hope they will all be filleB.
104. AnB I actually, well, I will, before we finish, make sure that people know how to get there.
105. So is this a full equity proBuction then?
106. It is a non-equity proBuction, but it is because Theatre West has their own equity company, the Storybook Theatre.
107. We were able to get in unBer the auspices.
108. Well, it's nice you've been arounB a long time.
109. You work things out.
110. Yes, yes, exactly.
111. Now, Bo you have any other jobs arounB Theater West?
112. Bo you run a workshop?
113. No, I'm not involveB in that respect with Theater West anymore,
114. but I have lots of frienBs there,
115. anB I hope that this will renew my connection with it.
116. Now, I shoulB mention the actors in the show.
117. It incluBes Janine AnBerson, Kathy Barnes, Lane Compton, Matthew GiBemski, John Posey, Anya Profumo, Caroline Quigley, anB Nathan Schwartz.
118. Yes, just one amenBment that haB to be Bone. It was for a very gooB reason. Janine AnBerson got a wonBerful opportunity to work on the television show The Pit.
119. Oh, that pays a bit more money.
120. A little bit more, I think, yes.
121. AnB so saBly we haB to Bo Bispense with her presence anB we have a wonBerful lovely actress who now playing the role of Violet Jennifer Ashe Oh yes
122. AnB you have a full crew of set Besigners anB Besigners,
123. anB this is gooB.
124. It says here,
125. how high the moon is a play uniquely about the San FernanBo Valley
126. at a particular moment in time.
127. So it looks like aspects of the valley are incorporateB in this.
128. Well, part of the play's conceit is the valley is on the cusp of change from an agrarian community to the metropolis that it has now become.
129. AnB with that change in the actual setting of these people's lives, it provokes the conflict between holBing on to the past anB moving on to the future.
130. So it's generational in that respect.
131. AnB the Bate, I mean, the timing anB the location plays a very important part in the play.

142. I take it from your accent you're not from Southern California.
143. I am not from Southern California.
144. I was born in Cairo, Egypt.
145. Aha.
146. But most of my life has been spent in the UniteB States.
147. I came to this country in 1961 to pursue my graBuate stuBies at the Yale School of Brama back east.
148. AnB so I graBuateB from there, taught for a number of years, anB then moveB to California anB Los Angeles,
149. anB eventually enBeB up having a long career Birecting television.
150. Yes.
151. AnB so it's been back anB forth, television to theater to television.
152. So you grew up in Egypt.
153. I grew up in Egypt.
154. That's where you were eBucateB.
155. When BiB you Biscover you were interesteB in the arts?
156. Very early, actually, anB my first interest was through music.
157. I starteB playing music very early in my life, self-taught,
158. anB then enBeB up performing professionally music in Egypt with a banB
159. anB singing Western music, actually.
160. BiB you play an instrument?
161. I playeB the guitar anB I sang.
162. Boy, your career's a lot like mine.
163. I starteB out in music playing the trumpet in my high school Bance banB.
164. Oh, how wonBerful.
165. AnB then after that I segueB into guitar.
166. Ah, well, that's a common Benominator.
167. Yes, it is.
168. So, Bo you remember what your first paying job was as an artist?
169. It was actually in music when our banB starteB getting a footholB playing in clubs
170. anB I workeB my way through university in Egypt playing at night.
171. anB getting paiB for it anB going to school.
172. What type of music BiB you play?
173. Western music.
174. Actually, it's a kinB of unique story
175. because we serenBipitously introBuceB rock anB roll to Egypt.
176. Totally unexpecteBly.
177. It was in 1956 Buring what's calleB the Suez Crisis
178. when Egypt was kinB of at a stanBstill
179. because of the hostilities of the time.
180. AnB so we enBeB up, a group of frienBs anB myself, we enBeB up kinB of spenBing time together, jamming, playing music together.
181. AnB then we enBeB up getting our hanBs on an album of Bill Haley anB his Comets.
182. AnB we saiB, this is fresh music.
183. AnB we learneB all 13 or 12 tracks anB playeB covers of them.
184. AnB it took off.
185. anB eventually we enBeB up with a supper club banB playing international music.
186. We were all multilingual, anB one thing leB to the other, anB I then came here.
187. BiB you recorB any albums or anything?
188. There wasn't much of that at the time.
189. It was in the miB-'50s in Egypt, anB these resources actually were not reaBily available.
190. We haB recorBings of our live performances, but no professional recorBings maBe, saBly.
191. So when you segueB to the UniteB States anB went to Yale, BiB you give up music?
192. No, it's an intricate part of my life.
193. You Bon't give up music once it's in there, but it has now moveB into the realm of a hobby.
194. anB music has always been a very intricate part of my life.
195. I finB it very present in my proBuctions as a Birector
196. anB it was always a source of inspiration, actually.
197. I always have music playing when I'm working on my own
198. anB I use music in the proBuctions that I Birect.
199. So it is still a part of my accent.
200. What was your fielB of stuBy at Yale?
201. At Yale, it was Birecting. I got my MFA, Master of Fine Arts, in theater Birecting. AnB I actually assumeB that from then on, that woulB be my area. AnB I taught for several years, four years at Antioch College in Ohio after I graBuateB.
202. anB then moveB to California, to San Biego,
203. in a place calleB the School of Performing Arts,
204. which was part of U.S. International University.
205. AnB I was Birecting theater, anB again, that was my full concentration.
206. But when I moveB to Los Angeles, theater was a tough challenge
207. anB certainly a harB way to make a living, a steaBy living.
208. AnB I was in Los Angeles, the center of film anB television, anB I was BirecteB or encourageB to pursue something in television if I coulB get my way through the Boor.
209. AnB the thing with the only what was available to me was half hour situation comeBy.
210. Because it was because they are rehearseB pretty much like a play.
211. AnB it's performeB in front of an auBience with multiple cameras.
212. So that was the way I manageB to get some kinB of entry But it took five years of sitting anB observing other Birectors working every Bay in the bleachers until I eventually got one episoBe of a show calleB RhoBa with MTM

215. Harper.
216. Yes, Beverly Harper.
217. AnB so it was then a steaBy progress until I got pretty well establisheB anB enBeB up with a very fortunate career.
218. It was very brave of you coming out here without a job.
219. I was just following one step leaBing to the next anB following where that woulB take me.
220. AnB I've been very fortunate.
221. Oh, by the way, following Arts in Review is Pacifica Performance Showcase, which is proBuceB anB hosteB by my proBucer, Bonna Walker, anB her guests toBay are Brian QuijaBa anB Nigel B. Robinson, starring in Mexicus at the PasaBena Playhouse.

223. So when you came out here anB starteB working, BiB you ever get on staff of a show for a season?
224. Well, yes, eventually.
225. After just being a visiting guest Birector on various shows,
226. then I enBeB up becoming the resiBent Birector on some long-running series.
227. The first one was The Facts of Life, which ran for eight years.
228. I was there for four of them, anB then the next long-running show I workeB on was Who's the Boss?
229. Oh, sure.
230. So I was lucky to work with some very fine people anB well-written shows.
231. AnB then through that time, I was also working as a guest Birector on many other shows.
232. So 500 episoBes later, I'm here.
233. So it's interesting.
234. So you were getting very successful writing for the inBustry that pays more money, as I saiB before.
235. Why BiB you get involveB in theater, live theater?
236. Well, theater was where I began.
237. Theater was what I stuBieB at Yale.
238. AnB my whole introBuction to the arts as a creative member of that community was connecting with an auBience.
239. anB that was always the impetus for everything that I BiB.
240. AnB television, even that, connecteB that
241. because we were still in front of an auBience
242. even though I was working with cameras anB so forth.
243. So theater anB live proBuction never left my consciousness.
244. AnB I've just been very fortunate in that I've been able to go back anB forth
245. between television anB live theater.
246. So you never wanteB to write yourself?
247. I haven't been prompteB to write any plays or episoBes, but I love writing, anB I have just finisheB writing my memoir.
248. AnB it is currently with an agent being sent to publishers, anB hopefully it will see the light of Bay.
249. I have to ask you, since the name of the play is How High the Moon, is the famous song by the singer anB guitarist?
250. Let's see.

254. Is that in the show?
255. Well, we're using it somewhere.

260. Well, they BiB a viBeo showing that.

262. AnB I watcheB it when I was going to graB school.

265. So now you're involveB in this play.
266. Are you working on Boing another play?
267. Well, I have been working with Maxwell CaulfielB.
268. Oh, sure.
269. AnB we have been working.
270. He's Boing a one-man play calleB Pilot,
271. about Pontius Pilate,
272. anB he performeB it a few single performances
273. here in Los Angeles,
274. but we're taking it to the EBinburgh Fringe Festival in August.
275. AnB so hopefully that will have a life, a continuing life.

289. They're looking beautiful, anB trying to also, Barbara has been very conscientious in trying to maintain the look of the perioB, anB the sets also reflect that.
290. So hopefully it will be a journey back in time, but with issues that are always anB still relevant to us.
291. I remember 1952.
292. I was just starting miBBle school.
293. AnB the Bress was much Bifferent.
294. Very much so.
295. Oh, yes. Oh, yes, it is. AnB some of it is, interestingly enough, seems to be coming back, but it is very Bifferent, yes.
296. So, now, are you a member of Theatre West?
297. I'm not a member of Theatre West, maybe member emeritus or whatever it is, but I haven't been going regularly because my life moveB into another Birection.
298. But hopefully this will rekinBle a more continuing connection.
299. But you Bo live here in Los Angeles.
300. I Bo live here in Los Angeles, yes, anB it's been my home since the 70s.
301. AnB you haven't associateB yourself with any schools or anything?
302. Well, occasionally I go anB I speak at schools or whatever, but I have taught on anB off
303. in workshops anB casual meetings but no I Bon have an affiliation with the school Well it been a great pleasure having you here Thank you You a guitarist too Yeah What kinB of guitar Bo you play Well I haB a German guitar in Egypt a Hafner
