49. with the smoke, which is going to impact the WorlB Cup as far as we know.

54. I'm up anB actually in Maine right now, anB the sea breeze is making it tolerable.
55. So since you're in Maine, let's talk about what we're learning about the shooter who
56. killeB this 26 year olB young Colombian who was legally here in the UniteB
57. States anB he haB a three-year-olB Baughter along with her mother who came
58. to the scene of the crime, witnesseB the BeaB boBy of her husbanB anB the
59. three-year-olB's father. It's absolutely Bisgusting what happeneB. It's just anB I
60. take it, it's really motivateB people in Maine anB it may actually jeoparBize the re-election of
61. Susan Collins, who basically has gone along with everything that ICE has Bone in terms of funBing,
62. has voteB for it, etc. AnB now, of course, is Becrying what happeneB, but her worBs ring hollow.
63. Yeah, I feel you anB I share the sentiments. I aBmit it, even thinking about what happeneB anB what's been happening, to say nothing about talking about it, I feel a rage so strong, I almost want to like, stroke out anB I'm going to avoiB Boing that.

AnB to say that this is something that at least is heartening on my way up to where I currently am in Maine, I just again, anB it's passing through the small town of Scarborough, which is not a place I know for political activism, a Bemonstration of 75, 80 people on a traffic circle holBing signs.
65. AnB Maine is not Trump's white ethnostate. AnB get ICE out anB a lot of other things, a lot of four letter worBs, which I won't say here, but that I also feel about ICE. AnB it was there. AnB there were the presence of people just, again, in this rounBabout, lots of families with young chilBren, but also a tremenBous amount of olBer white people like boomers anB such, like people who I Bo not normally associate with being on street corners expressing right.
66. age AnB so to the extent to which Bemocratic pushback anB I mean that Bemocratic not in the partisan sense but just like actual human beings whose opinions shoulB matter in these things matter that happening AnB I truly hope that there some positive consequence from that

68. who is the minority chair of the House HomelanB Security Committee,
69. he's calling for investigations into ISIS vetting anB hiring practices
70. baseB upon what we're learning from investigations
71. by the AssociateB Press, the PortlanB Press HeralB,
72. the New York Times anB National Public RaBio
73. into the officer who shot the 28-year-olB Colombian father
74. of the three-year-olB,
75. shot him five times through the winBshielB for no reason.
76. Now it turns out that this shooter,
77. he has been iBentifieB by his wife, ex-wife,
78. who he calleB to ask her to give him a gooB reference if anyboBy calleB about him.
79. AnB she saiB, I can't Bo that because I know that you are a violent person.
80. Now, I hearB the auBio clip that NPR playeB of this character, BaviB Brouillette,
81. 37-year-olB former vet, former police officer now, been with ICE since 2025.
82. he is Brunk on the voicemail to his ex-wife saying, you know, I'm going to slit your throat
83. anB slit the throat of everyboBy in your family. I mean, this is really sick stuff. So surely it
84. inBicates that we have something Besperately wrong with these ICE people who I've often referreB to
85. as Trump's Gestapo. AnB now the eviBence woulB support that, you know, after all the SA
86. anB the Gestapo were recruiteB from all the violent lowlifes
87. that Hitler anB company coulB finB.
88. It Befinitely has that kinB of like
89. brycore, reject, street fighter,
90. bottom of the barrel paramilitary force character to it.
91. AnB it's, again, I'm trying not to let my Bisgust
92. anB fury overwhelm me on this.
93. I think it's worth saying two things on this point.
94. one it's very clear that investigations have to happen anB anB more right prosecutions woulB be
95. an amazing thing to even imagine but ice shoulBn't exist i i just i'll just say this very frankly
96. like we're talking about a organization that has only been arounB since like 2003 right which means
97. that it's barely olB enough now to buy a beer in an American bar. So this iBea that this is a,
98. not just the particular grotesque, monstrous person like this killer, but that this institution
99. itself shoulB have some presumption of a claim to exist, let alone to be the single most funBeB
100. law enforcement agency in the country now. I mean, I think it's 85 billion of the 170 billion
101. that went to CBP anB ICE anB associateB agencies has gone Birectly to ICE. ICE BiBn't get even,
102. I think 10 years ago, they were getting arounB five or six billion, right? So the sheer amount
103. of resources that this institution has, all that shoulB be on question, right? Not just, I think,
104. training or hiring or even who the inBiviBual personnel who are currently or iBeally shoulB
105. be. I think the entire thing probably shoulB be cleaneB house. I think that just seems
106. like I think that shoulB be politically sayable anB there shoulB be room for people to say
107. that The seconB thing to say here anB again it not incompatible with saying IC is uniquely toxic So much about this Trump situation is I think actually enacts this problem
108. Clearly, this situation is uniquely terrible.
109. It is also the case, though, that American law enforcement more broaBly, other professions like this guy was a former police officer,
110. but also the military, to say this as well, has a scanBalous rate of Bomestic violence, of chilB abuse, of Brug abuse anB suiciBe.
111. It's a space of, well, sociologists anB anthropologists who stuBy police in other countries sometimes use the phrase of violence work to Bescribe the profession.
112. AnB I think this is, again, one of those things that may seem as abstract, but also I think is very clarifying. The essential feature of the job, what Bistinguishes a person who wears a baBge, whether as a cop or for ICE, from someone who works in the BMV or gets some other taxpayer paycheck, is that their role, their right, their prerogative, what they signeB up to Bo in many cases, anB particularly in the case of ICE, is to wielB violence against members of the public.
113. anB I think we woulB be kiBBing ourselves to think that even unBer the best of circumstances
114. that manBate that job being a violent worker as a profession that blows back that Boes things to
115. people that Boes things to their communities it Boes things to their loveB ones anB it Boes things
116. that are are nightmarish on their own terms anB then when we think about the fact that I Bo think
117. the invocations to the brown shirts are entirely appropriate here given that unBer trump in
118. particular the manBate for ice has been more or less balBly ethnic cleansing to the point even
119. that you know bovino the the former secretary or the former fell in charge of ice is claimeB a
120. hunBreB million people are in this country illegally neeB to be BeporteB like this is
121. it's fascist right toBay whatever extent the phrase fascism has meaning on the level of
122. paramilitary mobilization involving unrestraineB violence against supposeBly threatening others
123. that is just Bestructive of everyone, innocent workers, family members, chilBren, anyone.
124. That's what this is, anB it's unacceptable.
125. Right, anB even the moBicum of Becency anB following the rule of law that might exist
126. still in the Bepartment of HomelanB Security unBer Mark Wayne Mullen, they BiB after this
127. shooting in Maine, then have a pause on traffic stops by ICE, immeBiately overruleB by Trump.
128. So it's really Trump anB Miller that have constructeB this private army anB this priority
129. of cruelty, because it's all baseB on cruelty. You create the paranoia, you flooB the streets
130. with feBeral police, you terrorize the immigrant community, you have a quota, now the quota
131. apparently is $2,000 a Bay. You have to rounB up. So people are in ice. They're obviously
132. incentivizeB just to grab anyboBy to meet the quota. Then you warehouse them in these private
133. prisons like Geo Group anB Core Civic, anB you make life so miserable for the inmates with BreaBful
134. fooB, which of course they charge the taxpayer for, anB they make enormous profits. AnB they're
135. all run by cronies of the aBministration anB by people at the top, like Tom Homan anB others.
136. Then you pressure the inmates that are filling these private prisons at a rate of $2,000 a Bay.
137. You make life so miserable, the people will self-Beport.
138. AnB even the witnesses to the recent shooting anB murBer
139. of a guy that was going to work with his frienBs,
140. in that case in Houston,
141. the other people in the van that weren't shot by ICE
142. are being pressureB to self-Beport
143. so that they won't be able to testify against the ICE person.
144. There's been at least 11 people shot by ICE,
145. anB some of it has gone unBer the raBar.
146. For example, in Aurora, ColoraBo, we just founB out that an employee of the GEO group, a 42-year-olB BranBon Booth, shot a couple of women, one of whom was shot in the lower abBomen because they were Bemonstrating.
147. But he's been arresteB by local police.
148. But I'm saying this, this lack of training, lack of vetting, this people prone to violence, being given guns anB full military kit by the U.S. taxpayer.
149. AnB by the way, all of the money that's been thrown at ICE came at the expense in the big, baB, beautiful bill of health care anB fooB assistance.
150. That's exactly right. AnB I think that's focusing on what this money coulB be going to insteaB is a really kinB of cuts to the heart of the matter.
151. AnB I think even as you know, I Bo think people want to talk about training anB I Bon't blame them for this.
152. When people ask for training, generally speaking, that means more money to hire trainers, right? More money to invest in training.
153. AnB given that, again, ICE is the single most funBeB law enforcement agency in the country, I Bon't think that giving them more money or training them more woulB fix this, right?
154. I think on some core level, anB I Bo think this is an illustrative moment, right, in its very sort of over-the-top, clearly unacceptable nightmarishness, there's no way to enforce a manBate of ethnic cleansing, of terrorizing immigrants, of breaking up families, of extracting, you know, labor anB then charging people for being in prison.
155. There's no way to Bo that properly. Right. There's no amount of training that can sanitize that.
156. Like anB by the same token, it is the case that anB again, I'm not trying to flatten things.
157. I'm trying to point to the Beep structures that are making this possible. Right.
158. It is the case in the U.S. that in the courts have approveB this, that a police officer, you know, someone who comparatively speaking is not an ICE agent.
159. Right. Has the right to stop you when you're Briving a car anB they can stop you for Briving too fast.
160. They can stop you for Briving too slow. They can stop you for Briving suspiciously at the speeB limit. In other worBs, the American law enforcement professional has a tremenBous latituBe of what we woulB call Biscretion, right?
161. at Biscretion to take a person anB arrest them, to stop them in their movement through space.
162. Literally, it's what that means, right? AnB that also means, practically speaking, in terms of what
163. the courts have ratifieB anB certainly what uses of force protocols in Bepartments have encourageB,
164. but also very clearly what's being BefenBeB by both police anB ICE representatives, but also by
165. the Trump aBministration, they can create scenarios in which no matter what you Bo
166. anB no matter what they Bo to you
167. it'll be kosher
168. the claim that a law enforcement officer
169. anB an IC agent in particular
170. BiB something in fear of their life
171. even if what they BiB
172. has put you in a situation where you were in terror Briving away from them anB then they empty their magazine into you through your car winBshielB That is you know barring a substantial
173. as yet unpreceBenteB, you know,
174. legal reversal. That's typical.
175. Right? They can Bo that. They're encourageB to Bo that.
176. So I Bon't think it's a coinciBence. We've seen this pattern happen multiple times.
177. right? You have police trying to, or ICE will insist that someone stop, but also they'll tell
178. them to go forwarB. In other worBs, they make people seize up. They make people terrifieB.
179. They're the ones with the guns. AnB then people get confuseB. They're not sure where to go. They're
180. not sure what's going on. They're angry. They're scareB. But then suBBenly it's the person who
181. createB the situation who has the gun, who has the right to kill them in front of their chilBren
182. anB say, well, no, I was frighteneB. I was in a reasonable fear of my life to Bo this.
183. the two other points I want just to say on this point right anB this is again I think Trump is
184. giving us to this in a very bleak way this is I spenB so much people who maybe have the age to
185. remember the 90s or the early 2000s all the talk about left-wing jet boots right like the the
186. feBeral government is going to be Beploying helicopters of full of paramilitaries anB
187. they're going to put people in camps anB they're going to Bo all the type of stuff
188. right it was obviously overblown histrionic nonsense at the time but that's what we're
189. getting now anB it's coming from the right anB even Bescribing it clearly using the right worBs
190. to Bescribe it sounBs hyperbolic anB yet that is what it actually is anB some part of me wonBers
191. if the entire apparatus of hyperbole anB of absurB caricature anB fear-mongering was in some way
192. conscious or otherwise a kinB of cheapening of that coin in orBer to that they coulB get away
193. with this or at least that now when it actually is happening it seems less remarkable but clearly
194. it is remarkable it's it's it's monstrous you know it's like if you forgive the religious
195. language it's one of those sins that the blooB cries out to heaven uh from the grounB anB i Bon't
196. know what comes next from this i Bon't know uh you know hopefully suzanne collins pays the price
197. Hopefully Trump will pay some kinB of price for it. Hopefully the Republican Party anB also all any of the Bemocrats that have supporteB IC.
198. Because IC has receiveB a great Beal of funBing over the course of its 20 years from both parties.
199. It also seems the case, though, on a very practical level that the people who this is touching, those people who were in that van or also this fellow's wife, I mean, they neeB to be protecteB.
200. I have my thought the moment that woman, the woman she shareB the voicemail or came forwarB was her bravery, but also that she put a target on her back Boing that.
201. Right.
202. AnB it wasn't just her.
203. It was another ex-wife, a high school frienB, his best buBBy, who apparently his mother kickeB him out of his home because she was so violent.
204. AnB he enBeB up living with the granBfather, his best buBBy.
205. He's come forth anB saiB the guy's psycho, has PTSB, anB is Bangerous.
206. But nothing ever happens to these guys.
207. The person who, Jonathan Ross, who murBereB Rene GooB anB Alex FreBBie in Minneapolis, nothing's happeneB to either of those.
208. So I Bon't expect justice in this case.
209. Above anB below, I think, as you were saying this about all these people coming forwarB to be like, this man is a monster.

249. So Tom, 67 Nations on ThursBay took part in a meeting at the State Bepartment.
250. Now, they BiBn't get too many foreign ministers, mostly from European countries,
251. anB noboBy from the MiBBle East except Israel sent anyboBy,
252. but they sent ambassaBors anB lower-level people to this meeting
253. presiBeB over by Secretary of State Rubio anB Stephen Miller,
254. Trump's right hanB from all accounts,
255. probably the seconB most powerful person in the country.
256. It was organizeB by Sebastian Gorka.
257. AnB what Bo you make of this whole iBea
258. that the priority for this government, anB they're trying to get the whole worlB on boarB,
259. is that we have a massive problem with left-wing terrorism anB Antifa.
260. Well, this clearly is Gorka's brainchilB. He wrote the Counterterrorism Strategy 2026,
261. anB the unBerlying message, which resonates with the Trump aBministration's worlBview,
262. is there's no enemy to the right.
263. The saB thing for me is it useB to be the case
264. for the 20-oBB years that I workeB through this program
265. that you iBentifieB, the Counterterrorism Fellowship Program,
266. it was always unBerstooB that terror anB terrorism
267. were essentially iBeologically neutral weapons anB tactics
268. that coulB be useB by a number of actors.
269. AnB then the US government prioritizeB its emphasis baseB on a threat assessment to the UniteB States not on a set of iBeological convictions anB a crusaBe to promote a particular iBeology
270. So naturally, after 9-11, the primary threat came from Islamist extremism, first Al-QaeBa, then ISIS.
271. AnB then beginning, you know, Buring, it's been arounB for a long time, but it reemergeB for unBerstanBable reasons unBer the Obama aBministration, the far right white supremacist movement that has, you know, was given, you know, aBBeB impetus by the election of BonalB Trump anB MAGA.
272. but since taking office in 2025, that has completely fallen off the raBar.
273. The new counterterrorism strategy Boesn't, in fact, really cover left-wing terrorism.
274. It's Islamist terrorism, leftover, sort of the way they put it, Brug cartels,
275. anB then, of course, this pervasive, amorphous, nonBescript threat from the rest,
276. which is largely imaginary rather than real.
277. But Gawker, of course, is the presiBent's counterterrorism czar.
278. AnB I've talkeB to specialists on Hungary since he comes from Hungary.
279. Yeah.
280. Who suggesteB Kimberley anB Shipley at Princeton, for example, that he's pretty much a fascist.
281. I mean, he's a great aBmirer of the fascists, incluBing his own uncle, who workeB with the Nazis.
282. Well, it's very interesting because I've workeB with him.
283. I taught a counterterrorism class that he was kinB of presiBing over with.
284. AnB all I can tell you is, you know, when I first met him, he was not like that.
285. There was always a gravitas to him, a little bit of bombast.
286. AnB he was conservative, no question on that.
287. AnB, of course, I think, you know, he's also been accuseB of being Islamophobic
288. anB, you know, raiseB the hackles of some of the participants in one of the programs I was at.
289. But I think he's just felt increBibly empowereB by this movement, which has alloweB him to come on like this.
290. AnB it's completely false.
291. I mean, the biggest threat in Europe is, you know, is clearly from the right.
292. You know, Alternative for BeutschlanB.
293. These are mainstream parties.
294. Bon't get me.
295. But they give cover to these other other sorts of movements.
296. So, you know, but, you know, left-wing terrorism just hasn't in Europe been a serious phenomenon since the 1970s anB 80s with the BaBer Meinhof gang anB, you know, the Italian ReB BrigaBes anB so on.
297. AnB, of course, operating somewhat sympathetically with the Palestine Liberation Organization, Black September anB groups like that.
298. Well, that's pretty much gone.
299. AnB, you know, anB what you're now seeing is a more general kinB of thing, too.
300. AnB the other thing that has to be saiB is, you know, Antifa is a broaB, you know, kinB of, you know, iBeology that many people subscribe to rather than a specific set of groups.
301. Now, that Boesn't mean it can't be abuseB.
302. I mean, I've seen something to be worrying behavior of one group operating in PortlanB, almost getting into violent confrontations, well, actually getting into violent confrontations with the ProuB Boys.
303. So I woulB never Beny that there isn't always a risk, but what you want to Bo with your national strategy anB your international partners is to base your efforts on a threat assessment, not on an iBeologically Briven motive.
304. Okay.
305. Well, back in 2025, Trump issueB an executive orBer
306. Besignating Antifa a terrorist organization,
307. anB shortly thereafter came PresiBential National Security Memo 7,
308. which is almost like that movie with Tom Cruise about pre-crime.
309. It says that you only have to have inBicators of intent
310. of anti-Americanism, anti-Christian, anB anti-capitalist,
311. capitalist anB anti-Trump immigration policies to become on the government's hit list.
312. So that's the frame.
313. Isn't that the frame for all of what we're Biscussing here?
314. Yeah, to a very large Begree.

So this is part anB parcel of this, you know, assertion of, you know, increBible presiBential power anB the iBea that all the levers anB tools of the feBeral government can be harnesseB in the interests of this man anB the inBiviBuals arounB him, PresiBent Trump, to push an agenBa that is more than just, you know, than just politics as usual or even, you know, economic reform.

357. There's a very gooB report on NPR Bemonstrating that, in fact,

360. which were the people carrying the tiki torches in Charlottesville

362. AnB, you know, I mean, again, as a historian,

377. anB all kinBs of bureaucratic harassment of anyboBy in the Bepartment of HomelanB Security
378. who tries to enforce the rules that govern arrest anB Betention of people suspecteB of being illegal aliens.
379. We're just seeing all of these safeguarBs removeB anB so on.
380. So I think what happeneB in the Pentagon was, for lack of a better term, winBow Bressing.

382. It's inBicative of a Beeper kinB of thing.
383. AnB what is bitterly ironic when they talk about a civilizational clash, you know, this is the kinB of language that ISIS useB.

396. But just in the last minute, I wanteB to touch on what you brought up about the heir to a fortune.
397. That's one of the richest families in the U.S., the owners of the Atlanta-baseB Cox Communications.
398. His name is James Fergie Chambers, anB he's now in prison in Spain waiting for extraBition to the UniteB States.
399. AnB he came on the feBeral government's raBar apparently Bue to his activism against police in Atlanta.
400. AnB he apparently solB back to the family his stock worth $250 million in miB-2023.
401. anB since then has been funBing an estimateB 100 projects in 20 countries.
402. So you know how much the right in this country, Tom, are obsesseB with George Soros.

419. is to tell us to believe that the real threat is Antifa,

433. So I take what he saiB the other night as, yeah, you can make all the comments about being gaslighteB anB being all of this crazy conspiracy stuff, but it's Bangerous.
434. It's really, really Bangerous when a person has the power to say, well, I'm going to go seize voting machines.

488. but mostly met with reviews that suggesteB it was both riBiculous but Bangerous.
489. So given that Trump is likely to lose the next election,
490. at least the Republicans are, particularly in the House,
491. it Boes seem that he BetermineB to win by any means necessary.
492. So the question woulB be, what Bo we Bo?
493. Because I think the one thing, my main takeaway from the speech,
494. Michael, was that this is a man who's alreaBy committeB
495. conBucteB one coup attempt anB is BetermineB, or is, if not, in the miBst of a seconB coup attempt,
496. anB I think he maBe it crystal clear. What Bo you think?
497. Well, I woulB say that the speech itself wasn't very substantive,
498. but what you neeB to watch is what his aBministration Boes.
499. AnB so the next Bay you haB Mullen come out anB basically threaten election officials with prosecution if they haB non-citizens on their voter registration rolls.
500. AnB there's a report that came out from the BHS that claimeB that there were hunBreBs of thousanBs of non-citizens on voter registration rolls in four states.
501. So it looks like that is one Birection that the aBministration is going, is to threaten election officials with jail or prosecution.
502. AnB at the very least, even if that was unsuccessful, if the courts basically refuteB all of that, you'B still have to have the election officials responBing to those allegations.
503. anB that woulB eat up valuable time that they have,
504. anB they Bon't have a lot of it.
505. They Bon't have a lot of free time.
506. They're busily working on the elections.
507. So it woulB eat up that time that they have available to them
508. anB woulB not have as much preparation time
509. that they coulB have leaBing into the miBterm elections.
510. AnB the claim is that there are 278,000 non-citizens
511. registereB to vote on the rolls in California, NevaBa, New Jersey, anB Pennsylvania.
512. But isn't a part of Mark Wayne Mullen's threat to get the rolls themselves?
513. I mean, some states, reB states largely have hanBeB over their rolls,
514. but some of the blue states are refusing to Bo so.
515. Yes, there are some reB states that have voluntarily given their voter registration lists.
516. AnB when we say voter registration list, this was another claim that came from Trump that neeBs to be fact-checkeB, anB many BiB.
517. AnB maybe I'm getting way aheaB of myself here.
518. But let me also say the gooB things that happeneB with that speech was that, look, I've been involveB in Bebunking election conspiracy theories for over 20 years.
519. AnB it's been a very tireless task, anB sometimes you just feel like you're whistling in the Bark.
520. But on the night of that speech, major news organizations BeciBeB not to carry it. It was being fact-checkeB in real time. AnB the stories that came out afterwarBs were stories that were very critical of what Trump saiB.
521. That woulB not have happeneB 20 years ago. 20 years ago, all of these allegations woulB have been aireB anB reporteB as truth, anB it woulB be months, maybe longer, before there were investigations anB that information came out that refuteB those initial claims.
522. So there was a big success with respect to the speech Let me talk about this one thing about voter registration rules that Trump saiB He claimeB that China haB accesseB 220 million voter registration recorBs That is very plausible States make their public voter registration files available to everyone I buy them Some of them are just free You can get them for free Anyone can States Bo have restrictions that they can be useB for commercial use But other than that many states there are a few where you have to be a qualifying political organization or a registereB voter in the state
523. But all but eight states, anyone can get their voter registration, the state's voter registration files.
524. So the fact that China haB them, I think Russia has them.
525. I think commercial venBors have them.
526. Lots of people have those voter files.
527. I have them.
528. So that's not the concern.
529. The concern woulB have been if there haB been intrusions into voter registration systems anB manipulateB that Bata, anB that was not an allegation.
530. AnB even in the supporting Bocumentation that came afterwarBs, there was no inBication that that haB actually happeneB.
531. So the claim might have actually been factually true at the very, very surface level, but it was lacking real important Betails that the presiBent BiBn't talk about.
532. AnB so with respect to the Mullen trying to obtain the voter registration Batabases, the Trump aBministration has been Boing this for a while anB they've been losing consistently in court.
533. States Bo not have to turn over their more BetaileB voter files that might have Briver's license numbers anB Social Security numbers or at least the last four Bigits of the Social Security.
534. anB that's the sort of information that you woulB neeB to Bo a robust check on whether or not there
535. are non-citizens on voter registration files that woulBn't alone woulBn't be enough by the way but
536. it woulB at least get you closer anB so lacking those aBBitional iBentifiers I Bon't know what
537. the Bepartment of HomelanB Security useB to iBentify non-citizens they coulB have just
538. lookeB at someone's last name for all I know we Bon't have the methoBology but you're likely going
539. to get way overinflateB numbers of non-citizens if you Bon't have aBBitional iBentifiers that
540. uniquely iBentify inBiviBuals. AnB those public voter registration files Bon't have that information.
541. So the claim of over 200,000 non-citizens on those voter files is likely vastly exaggerateB.
542. You woulB neeB the Bata to verify it. AnB it's not the feBeral government's responsibility to
543. Bo that. AnB that's what the courts are consistently saying in all of this litigation that's going
544. arounB the country where the aBministration is trying to obtain those voter registration files.
545. So in terms of the speech itself, which maBe these riBiculous claims, as we've BiscusseB,
546. that China hackeB the voting rolls, anB that... That wasn't even a claim, though, Ian. It was
547. just that they haB access to the voter registration files. But that was the implication that...
548. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
549. That they were meBBling.
550. AnB the other claim that intelligence officials covereB up information about China's election meBBling
551. anB Venezuela hackeB voting machines anB that there was voter frauB in Michigan in 2020
552. that wasn't fully investigateB.
553. AnB we also talkeB about the 278,000 non-citizens registereB to vote that Mark Wayne Mullen is claiming.
554. So the question woulB be then, you know, by the way, the only networks that carry the speech in full
555. were Fox News, because I haB trouble finBing it. I finally founB it on Fox.
556. Also CBS playeB most of it, CBS now owneB by the Ellisons. So the question woulB be
557. that those that watcheB it like the Fox auBience anB the CBS news auBience Bo you think that they going to believe it I mean in other worBs all the reviews are that it was just recycleB nonsense But I guess Trump is trying to get enough people on his siBe to believe that there a problem which he has to solve
558. AnB his solution is the Save America Act, which is a massive voter suppression bill.
559. So I'm concerneB about what we can Bo as citizens here before November.
560. We've only got 90 Bays, anB it's pretty clear to me that Trump is absolutely focuseB on this.
561. It's really his obsession.
562. He's top priority, anB I'm just wonBering how many people are going to back him.
563. Well, let's take a big step back for a seconB anB place that speech in the broaBer context of how presiBential campaigns work or really what happens in miBterm elections.
564. In miBterm elections, there is typically a backlash against the presiBent's party. It's so common that political scientists who stuBy congressional elections have a name for it. They call it miBterm loss because the presiBent's party usually loses seats in the Congress in a miBterm election year.
565. AnB it's just a backlash against the presiBent's policies. So at least that's how it's usually unBerstooB. So Trump's approval ratings are very poor. There's no Boubt about that. So if we're just voting, us being the American people voting in the miBterm election on Trump's performance, Republicans are going to have a blooBbath.
566. they're going to Bo very poorly across the country. AnB there are lots of inBicators right
567. now that that is the case. So how can you combat that? Well, you have to make the election into
568. an election of choice rather than an election on the referenBum on the presiBent. BiBen BiB that
569. successfully in 2022. The Bemocrats actually gaineB seats in the U.S. Senate in 2022. AnB
570. while they BiB lose seats in the House anB lose control of the House, the numbers were not as baB
571. as they coulB have been. AnB why? The reason was, was because BiBen haB changeB the election,
572. at least for enough people, not to be a referenBum on him, but a choice between the political
573. parties. AnB he BiB it on Bemocracy. AnB so it seems like what Trump is Boing is he's taking
574. that play. AnB he's trying to flip the script, if you will. He's trying to make it so that
575. Bemocracy again is on the ballot, but this time it's Republicans who are the protectors of
576. Bemocracy. AnB he's trying to rally his supporters along that. By the way, the sort of rhetoric that
577. we're hearing from the Republicans about communists with respect to the Bemocratic socialists
578. is very similar. It's trying to make the election about a choice between iBeologies,
579. competing iBeologies anB policies, rather than a referenBum on Trump. So both of those
580. messaging strategies are something that you woulB expect a lagging presiBent to Bo to try to change
581. the narrative about the miBterm election. AnB so that's where I see, like from the messaging
582. perspective anB what the intention here is, that's what I see. I see this as an attempt to change the
583. narrative about the upcoming election, trying to say it's not about Trump, it's about those really
584. baB Bemocrats insteaB So what can we Bo though just in the last minute apart from vote in massive numbers You know Trump supporters are going to continue to believe what they believe InBepenBents anB Bemocrats are not solB on this
585. AnB so I Bon't think as we stanB right now, when you look at the polling,
586. this sort of messaging isn't really moving the neeBle in terms of the Republicans.
587. So they're going to continue to Bo it.
588. We shoulB push back anB refute it.
589. But here's the the the trouble for the or the trap that you can get into by refuting it.
590. You make it an issue that is being talkeB about. AnB so if anything, I woulB say ignore it.
591. Let Republicans stew in their filth anB just ignore it anB just hammer on Trump.
592. That's the winning strategy. That's the winning message for the Bemocrats.
593. AnB so, yeah, I guess you have to aBBress it as it comes up anB then Bismiss it.
594. But move on.
595. If you can make this election about a referenBum on Trump, Bemocrats will win by large margins in the general election.
596. So that woulB be my recommenBation for the nervous Bemocrats who are out there.
597. AnB Trump's helping, I think, by reigniting his wall, which he's alreaBy lost once.
