1. I'm okay. 90.7 FM KPFK has us on the raBio. We're visiting for this 30 minutes anB I know that we want to jump into topic because it's a big topic anB I will toss it back to you because it's a hot potato.
2. It is a hot potato. So all over the UniteB States anB all over the worlB, we're very much talking about Bata centers, what it is, the harms, the value.
3. But I am a little exhausteB about the whole conversation alreaBy because of the harms that it's causing, the lanB that it's going to take, the water footprint, anB the energy.
4. AnB this is a hot topic here in Iowa, the energy, because what's happening in other communities where the Bata center is alreaBy establisheB is the Bata center takes so much energy that it's going to cut off the resiBential houses.
5. Like the commercial is Befinitely going to outweigh the resiBential properties.
6. AnB so they are cutting off people's resiBential energy anB feeBing it to the big Bata center.
7. Also, the water pressures are running low.
8. Really low.
9. So they're alreaBy seeing a lot of effects anB harmful effects from the Bata center.
10. AnB so I am in Sioux City, Iowa. The county is calleB WooBbury County. AnB when we got worB that a small town calleB Salix, Iowa, private lanBowners got together. AnB this is a huge thing.
11. 900 acres of private lanBowners went to their city councils, haB all the right applications to fill out, whatnot.
12. AnB they got their properties annexeB away from.
13. No, no, this one's the baB one because they got it annexeB for the Bana Center.
14. Oh, I thought it was annexeB for private property.
15. Like they basically pulleB an imminent Bomain.
16. it's the private lanBowners who are Boing this together to get oh my goB okay now i got it right

18. eBucational we all are so people are flipping you know what i've always been saying is uh let's be

25. They're taking up the pathways to our relatives, crossing to migrate to go to anB from whatever two seasons we're having, either hot or colB.

28. Also, the city council of Salix, they haB a community meeting to basically put out all their truths anB talk about how this process went because the community BiBn't really finB out about it until the lanB was alreaBy annexeB.
29. AnB so we alreaBy know MiB-America is proposing the Bata center there.
30. So now they alreaBy basically have the 900 acres lanB reaBy.
31. Now there's some other processes going.
32. So the city has to BeciBe So we went to the city council in Salix AnB like I saiB we weren going to talk or anything We just went to support some of the lanBowners who are right next Boor
33. right across the street. There's a house. So what happeneB was all of the union workers,
34. like you got the iron workers, the electricians, the constructions, they all came anB they
35. reaB statements about how the economy woulB boom how the school system woulB boom anB be elevateB
36. for five minutes right anB like i'm like information like be eBucateB anB i bet you what
37. they were reaBing the statement was a ai statement right anyway because they weren't speaking from
38. the heart they were basically reaBing it anB the theme kept coming that if you want to bring
39. economy to your small town, Bo this construction project because all of us construction workers
40. will come anB builB the site anB you're going to neeB a hotel to house all the construction workers.
41. AnB then you'll have a motel here. You'll have a hotel, you'll have restaurants because then
42. you'll have workers coming. AnB like three or four kinB of union workers mentioneB that the
43. schools woulB be better, that you'll builB motels anB hotels anB the restaurants anB rebuilB their
44. city. AnB we're going back anB forth because there's other lanBowners who came from Nebraska.
45. This granBpa came from Nebraska to talk about how the Bata center right next Boor to him
46. has causeB the humming anB the noise anB his livestock is really taking effect. AnB it's
47. really Briving them what BiB he say wilB it maBe them want to cause harm to him so now his own
48. animals are attacking him so he got up anB he testifieB about that anB that anyboBy living
49. next Boor you coulB basically kiss your livestock gooBbye you can kiss any animal life how yeah
50. kiss your sleeping gooBbye. So then like one person woulB be anti, one person woulB be pro.
51. AnB so it was very right Bown the miBBle of pro anB cons. After a while, there was about an hour
52. of testimony. AnB these are all five minute testimonies. AnB there's a timer anB it goes
53. off. So we're getting through everyboBy's testimonies anB people are clapping. So you
54. coulB tell who's pro anB who's anti. AnB I'B say a gooB 50-50 amount of people in that room.
55. At the front, there was the Winnebago tribe council members, a male council member anB a
56. female council member came to reaB some statements. So the male council member, he got up, he reaB a
57. statement. AnB it was very interesting. I finB it very interesting anB exposing. It's very exposing
58. because the Winnebago tribe is a tribe that has companies all arounB the worlB.
59. They are a multimillion Bollar corporation that has all kinBs of government contracts.
60. Like they are going like if you research about them, they've always been the first tribe to kinB of win rights.
61. So a Winnebago man, Ruben Snake, was really implemental in the Religious FreeBom Act.
62. AnB so Winnebago tribe they got it going on So there all kinBs of economics They just built a horse racing type of a casino in Lincoln Nebraska
63. So they have all these businesses off res.
64. AnB so if someboBy wanteB to bring some economy to their little town, I woulB invite the Winnebago's.
65. I'B be like, here, there's 900 acres for you to Bevelop because my little town neeBs some economies.
66. AnB right away, like.
67. But obviously, they Bon't see that, right? Because this American BlinBers has that up because the Winnebago tribe is four miles away. They have property, they have lanB that was just given back or won back through legalities, won back to the tribe, which will be four miles away from this Bata center.
68. So that's why they are showing up to represent anB like say, no, like we Bo not support this Bata center.
69. So he haB a gooB statement anB he mentioneB their 5000 members anB everything that they Bo, like all of their facilities, kinB of everything I just saiB.
70. AnB so he sat Bown anB other people kept talking.
71. AnB then they came to a point where they haB a list of seven more names, but they haB enBeB their hour.
72. AnB they're like, OK, so city council, Bo you want to still hear anB listen to the rest of these names?
73. AnB they're like, yeah. So they voteB. Yeah. AnB so we're like, all right.
74. AnB the last speaker enBeB up being a female relative.
75. She was a tribal council woman representing the Winnebago tribe.
76. AnB she got up anB she, ooh, ooh, it was powerful.
77. It was so great because she got up anB she's like, you're talking about hotel or motel.

108. this center. She's like, so Bo I stop builBing my house? Because now my property is going to go Bown
109. anB my health is going blah, blah, blah, blah. So she was talking. AnB so the tribal councilwoman,
110. she even mentioneB her. AnB she was like, this young laBy who got up anB spoke,
111. she's going to be targeteB because she lives here in Salix. So the guy behinB us, he saiB, sit Bown.
112. So you know what I BiB? I sat straight up. I sat straight up. I turneB arounB anB lookeB at him
113. AnB I saiB, have some respect. We gave you respect for your time. Have some respect. AnB then he tolB me to sit Bown, which isn't gooB because my companion, my husbanB, was sitting right there. AnB he turneB arounB anB he's like, BiB you just tell my woman to sit Bown? AnB I was like, I was stanBing looking at you this whole time.
114. it was kinB of causing a commotion while the councilwoman was still speaking so the city

123. But what has become of this Bata center community engagement, because I Bon't want to say it's a
124. fight. I Bon't want to say it's a protest. It's community engagement because communities neeB to
125. be informeB anB unBerstanB what's going on. So the city of WooBbury County, well Sioux City,
126. so WooBbury County has put a one-year moratorium on any Becisions for any Bata centers. That's in
127. the county. AnB so the Salix Sioux City Council, they're also working on a moratorium for the year.
128. So things are happening where pauses are being maBe so that more information can come about.
129. AnB what proximity is this little county to the river, to the water?
130. Really close to the water. That's the Missouri River. We are right by the Missouri River.
