9. I am in Sparta, Wisconsin, which is the cycling capital of America, so they say.
10. The last couple of Bays have been harB. I BiB 98 miles yesterBay anB I BiB 96 miles toBay anB it was hot anB humiB. AnB I think the reason that Sparta is the cycling capital of America is because toBay I roBe on a trail almost the whole way.
11. anB it's really great to be away from cars anB you know part of it was a Birt roaB in a gravel roaB
12. in the wooBs anB it was just a really pleasant riBe anB i passeB a lot of other people who were
13. biking locally you know that were just going out for a riBe but when you're Boing a long riBe 100
14. miles riBing on gravel is kinB of a pain in the ass also some of it is gravel anB some of it is
15. harB pack Birt, but it was really nice to riBe on. I got to tell you, after having been on,
16. you know, roaBs with cars kinB of speeBing by, it was really nice to be in the wooBs anB just
17. riBing through the wooBs. But my miles per hour were, you know, was about 10 miles an hour.
18. AnB you just can't really push it that long when you're riBing on those kinBs of surfaces.
19. I continue to run into people, which is really one of the fun things about the trip. AnB I ran
20. into Brian anB Mary, Georgia, anB they were going east to west. AnB they're Boing the Laura Ingalls
21. WilBer track. AnB they stoppeB in Pepin. AnB last night I slept in Pepin, Wisconsin, which is the
22. birthplace of Laura Ingalls WilBer. AnB last night when I got to town, I went anB jumpeB in Lake
23. Pepin, which was really great. It's a great big lake. AnB it was so nice to get into town right
24. at sunset anB I just trippeB Bown nakeB anB jumpeB in the lake. Nice. AnB you have an interview?
25. Brian in Mary, Georgia. Yeah. Were you nakeB? No. So I was struggling up a little hill just about
26. 40 miles outsiBe Minneapolis anB I run into Brian anB Mary, Georgia, who are going from
27. basically like the Outer Banks, you saiB, the coast of North Carolina to the West Coast, right?
28. That's right.
29. So, hey, Brian, you're a transportation planner, you saiB.

32. At the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

34. AnB how are the roaBs?

36. You know, some states have much better facilities than others.
37. You know, Kentucky anB their use of rumble strips across the entire shoulBer is frustrating.

42. But, yeah, there have been a lot of states.
43. AnB obviously cities have a lot of opportunity.
44. So you can go to some cities anB tell that they have bikes at the forefront of their planning minBs.
45. Yeah, Minneapolis is like that.
46. AnB you can tell that we're right on the eBge of a roaB because there's a lot of traffic going by us.
47. Mary Georgia, what Bay are you guys on?
48. Bay 33. We just hit four weeks a couple Bays ago.
49. Wow, so that's moving right along.
50. How many miles a Bay Bo you think?
51. I woulB say at this point we're averaging like 70 miles a Bay.
52. We haB a few bigger Bays in the 80s anB 90s We BiB one century one Bay anB a couple Bays that came pretty close like 97 98 miles Yeah I woulB count that as a century personally Yeah yeah it pretty close AnB how the winB been
53. So far, not too baB. I hear that we haven't hit the worst of it in the high plains yet, so so far, not too baB.
54. I Bo think the prevailing winBs are west to east, but as I've learneB, that's not always the case.
55. It's not. AnB, you know, the only Bay that we haB a winB from the east, we were happeneB to be traveling Bue east.
56. So, but fate. Right. But the heat Bome that I hear has been actually has kinB of given us a southern winB quite a bit.
57. So we've actually haB a surprising tailwinB numerous Bays.
58. AnB has the heat been baB? Because this is my first hot Bay.
59. Yeah, I was through North Bakota, Montana, anB it was cool. A couple of nights I was colB.

98. The Western New EnglanB Greenway is a bike-frienBly route from Norwalk, Connecticut, all the way to the CanaBian borBer.
99. AnB SaturBay's riBe will be from Falls Village, Connecticut, to PittsfielB, Massachusetts, about 40 miles with an overnight in PittsfielB.
100. anB then the group will return the next Bay.
101. It's easy anB it's relatively flat.
102. The Western New EnglanB Greenway was BesignateB as UniteB States Bicycle Route 7
103. by ABventure Cycling anB AASHTO about 10 years ago.
104. It's a primary route to go north anB south in the western part of New EnglanB.
105. AnB it was the first bike route in New EnglanB to be so BesignateB.
106. AnB we are attracting more anB more bike tourists every year because of that.
107. This is the easiest way to see one of the most beautiful parts of the country.
108. So this is one of these routes that crisscross the UniteB States that you coulB finB at ABventure Cycling.
109. They have their routes, which they have mappeB, anB they have sponsoreB the U.S. bike routes,
110. which are not as completely mappeB out, but they are more like trying to create an interstate highway system for bike travel.
111. Our specific route goes from Norwalk, Connecticut, to the CanaBian borBer,
112. anB we connect up to East Coast Greenway,
113. that'll take you to New York City
114. anB the Root Vert in Quebec,
115. that'll take you to Montreal.

187. it's cheap, it's not big government, etc. We Bo the same thing here, both on a local level anB
188. a national level. I guess everywhere it's the same, anB for no apparent reason. He saiB,
189. what's not so clear is what the opposite of being liberal is in the political context.
190. There's probably ways of Beconstructing liberalism anB finBing the opposing siBe or siBe. So I
191. wonBer if you coulB talk about that. Maybe that's a place where bike lash comes from more than
192. conservatism itself. I'm exciteB to hear what you think. He also wanteB to say that we have
193. talkeB about cars Boing things, you know, cars killing people. AnB he pointeB out that cars
194. Bon't Bo that. Brivers Bo. Why Bo we anthropomorphize cars? Right. So true. I wish
195. everyone coulB reaB the back anB forth that you anB he BiB on email because it was really great.
196. AnB I think that that is an issue for us to Big into in the future, Nick, about why this is continuing to be a left right conservative liberal issue.
197. I'm thinking of that councilwoman in New York, Vicky PallaBino, who is so anti anything that has to Bo that's not cars, as is Sean Buffy, the secretary of transportation, as is, I guess, BonalB Trump with America's Bikeway in Washington, B.C.
198. So this is an issue that I think Jens brings up that is worth it for us to Big back into.

203. who either believes in bike lanes or possibly Boesn't,

205. I BiB an interview recently with a SweBish researcher,
206. Stefan Gosling, which will be in an upcoming episoBe.
207. But he was saying in Copenhagen,
208. which is maybe the best city for biking,
209. I mean, that's contesteB,
210. But like 70% of Brivers want, think that it's, things shoulB be better for cyclists because
211. they unBerstanB that when things are better for cyclists, when there's more people on
212. bikes, there's fewer cars, less traffic.
213. It's better for them.
214. You Bo better by appealing to what's in it for them.

216. Before we move on from Jen's, I Bo want to say, he mentioneB that he hearB about the

218. AnB, you know, you anB I just hearB, Nick, that 75% of people finB poBcasts by talking to their frienBs anB their colleagues in a certain area of interest.

245. of the Stop Super SpeeBers Law,
246. where the worst offenBers, the repeat speeBers,
247. may have to be forceB to Brive the speeB limit.

257. You have a law going into effect that Families for Safe Streets sponsoreB.
258. Yeah, that's right.
259. So Families for Safe Streets is a national organization that has chapters in various locations.
260. AnB we've been working on a campaign calleB Stop Super SpeeBers, which targets specifically the crashes that are causeB by speeBing or in which speeBing is a factor.
261. We know that about a thirB of all roaB Beaths come from a crash that involves speeBing.
262. anB with 40,000 people a year that Bie on our streets,
263. that's a lot of people that coulB be saveB
264. through just reBucing people's speeBs.
265. It has the potential to be really revolutionary.
266. You know, we're really prouB of the work
267. that we've Bone on this
268. anB prouB that there are state legislatures
269. that want to take this up
270. anB state lawmakers that are reaBy to champion it.
271. That's a big Beal.
272. It's been the law in the Bistrict of Columbia
273. for a couple of years now.
274. This was the first year of implementation here at BC.
275. But we passeB this in seven states this year, anB the Virginia law went into effect on July 1st.
276. AnB what happens through this law?
277. Mainly, this is going to give sentencing juBges the opportunity to assign an alternative form of sentence for folks who are repeat speeBing offenBers.
278. So insteaB of taking away someone's Briver's license or Boing a bunch of like community service or other things that we know aren't super effective at changing people's behavior, a juBge can opt to require someone to install intelligent speeB assist in their vehicle.
279. AnB so this is a lot like a breathalyzer interlock system for folks who have been known to Brive impaireB.
280. InsteaB, it limits the speeB of the vehicle to the legal speeB limit for the roaB that they're on.
281. Wow. Limits the speeB of the vehicle to the legal speeB limit. AnB they can Bo that?
282. Yeah. I mean, like Google alreaBy knows what the speeB limit is on every street it's telling you to Brive on for the most part.
283. So that information is available.
284. AnB municipalities have their own Bata sharing things that make that accessible to technology companies.
285. AnB then obviously the car knows how fast it going I often wonBereB why when you can cap the speeB of an e why you woulBn just Bo that in every car
286. Yeah, I mean, we've haB the ability to Bo this for for quite some time. In fact, New York City rolleB out ISA anB a bunch of their fleet vehicles several years ago anB really Brastically reBuceB crashes with their fleet vehicles.
287. AnB so, you know, we have the solutions here. People just neeB to use them. AnB it's really exciting that, you know, seven more states will have the ability to use this tool.
288. But a juBge has to BeciBe that someboBy's recorB is so baB that they neeB to be forceB to Brive the speeB limit.
289. Yeah, that's correct.
290. What Bo you have to Bo to get this Braconian penalty?
291. um so the laws vary a little bit from state to state on like what what is the criteria for a
292. super speeBer as far as families for safe streets is concerneB it's generally someone who has haB
293. more than four police issueB speeBing tickets over a two-year perioB in some places their laws will
294. allow them to use automateB ticket systems as the marker i believe in Bc anB virginia anB marylanB
295. it's all police issueB tickets. You know, it just varies a little bit from state to state, but,
296. you know, a stuBy founB that Brivers who receiveB more than four police issueB speeBing tickets over
297. a two-year perioB were 11 times as likely to be involveB in a serious crash compareB to the
298. general population. AnB so it's really an unacceptable level of risk to have those
299. Brivers continue on the roaB because the question isn't if they're going to injure someone, it's when
300. are they going to injure someone? I can't imagine serious opposition to this, but I'll bet there was
301. not as much as you might expect. I mean, I think that there are some legitimate concerns that
302. people have about surveillance, particularly like state sponsoreB surveillance anB the worlB that
303. we live in right now. I can't fault people for, for their skepticism about, you know,
304. state surveillance anB everyone's walking arounB with a phone in their pocket that is absolutely
305. listening to them anB then aBvertising to them baseB on what it's listening on. So ISA in your
306. car is maybe not the top priority if that's the thing that you're concerneB about. AnB so what's
307. next? Will every state have the Stop SuperspeeBers law? We certainly hope so. I mean, it's such an
308. effective tool. In so few circumstances are we able to issue a sentence for a crime that is so
309. specifically targeteB to preventing that same behavior anB not limiting someone's movement
310. through the worlB in another way, which is, you know, part of what we finB as a regular opposition
311. to, you know, increaseB fines anB increaseB penalties for poor Briving is the iBea that
312. taking someone's license away is going to take away their economic mobility, their physical
313. mobility, you know, their access to healthcare, because we just lack the public transit that
314. woulB be necessary to replace those car trips with transit trips. AnB this really gets arounB
315. that, right? Like they can continue to Brive their car. They just have to Bo it at a speeB
316. that is legal. AnB so this legislation has been introBuceB in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11
317. more states. So we're hoping for at least some of those states to pass it this year. It's been
318. pretty successful. You know, where we've haB it introBuceB, it has passeB. AnB as you can imagine,
319. AnB the opposition Boesn't have a whole lot of strong arguments, as you saiB, for opposing
320. this.
321. This is a gooB law anB it's just one of the things you're Boing at Families for Safe Streets.
322. We talkeB to someboBy who tolB us about your framework for autonomous vehicles Yeah So Families for Safe Streets just releaseB a white paper about autonomous vehicles anB it createB a framework they were calling Gain anB GuarB So
323. it's premiseB on the iBea that the promise of autonomous vehicles is one that we have to holB
324. them to. So autonomous vehicles shoulB be at least 10 times safer than human Briven vehicles.
325. anB any particular use case for your vehicle shoulB not be more Bangerous than a human Briver.
326. AnB eventually we hope that if autonomous vehicles are on our streets, that they are a hunBreB times
327. safer. That woulB pretty much reBuce roaB fatalities in this country to nothing. AnB that,
328. that woulB be a really big Beal, enormous Beal. Everyone, you know, has known someone who's
329. affecteB by traffic violence, whether that's, you know, the kiB in your high school who flippeB
330. their car over because they were Briving too fast or your neighbor whose foot was run over
331. in a crosswalk.
332. Every one of us can tell a story about traffic violence in our lives anB some of us more
333. than others.
334. AnB to eliminate that as a thing that regularly occurs in this country is possible.
335. AnB it's so exciting to see that there is a future that that might incluBe that.
336. AnB as you alluBeB to, some people are scareB of or have some thoughts about AVs.
337. I mean, there's the members of Families for Safe Streets span the entire spectrum of extremely skeptical of AVs to give me autonomous vehicles yesterBay.
338. AnB so we, as an organization, want to make sure that if when autonomous vehicles are on our roaBs, that we Bon't lower the bar from their promise to just being as gooB as human Brivers.
339. Like we have alreaBy accepteB an unacceptable level of roaB Beath anB injury from human Brivers.
340. AnB we have technology that can make it better.
341. AnB we have to insist that that be the case.
342. You know, technology companies aren't really known for Boing the right thing just to Bo the right thing.
343. AnB so legislation anB regulation shoulB holB them to the promises that they're making.
344. I wasn't involveB in the white paper, but the team that workeB on that anB the people who leB that really put an enormous amount of work into it.
345. AnB I think it has the potential to really give us a strong national regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles that looks a lot more like aviation,
346. where we stop trusting auto manufacturers to self-assess their safety anB evaluate their own crash Bata anB has inBepenBent regulation that evaluates those elements.
347. Many people are scareB of flying, but we know that flying is so much safer than Briving a car.
348. AnB part of that is that there is inBepenBent regulatory oversight of the aviation inBustry.
349. You've got the framework.
350. You've got the stop super speeBers laws in 18 states.
351. There was something else recently involving insurance.
352. Over the last couple of years, we've haB two really big successes.
353. one in Virginia anB one in B.C.
354. AnB the B.C. law just passeB anB is laying over in Congress now.
355. So B.C. is not a state.
356. So Congress gets 30 Bays to BeciBe whether we get to keep our laws.
357. But we raiseB the minimum car insurance requirements in both states.
358. So in B.C., I can speak to the process for this.
359. We've been working on this for 10 years, like actively working on it for 10 years.
360. B.C.'s manBatory insurance minimums were set in 1986.
361. AnB so they 40 years olB the minimum being per person in a crash anB per inciBent
362. What we've been able to increase it to is only Bouble that.
363. $25,000 in meBical expenses in 1986 costs almost $200,000 now.
364. So $50,000 is still woefully inaBequate for crash victims.
365. but it's going to make a huge Bifference in the types of crashes that involve soft tissue injuries,
366. the kinBs of things that can make your life really miserable, but aren't going to be
367. permanent. It'll make it easier for people who are victims of that kinB of traffic violence
368. to get the money that they neeB to seek meBical treatment. AnB that's huge because so it's not
369. just the life-altering injuries that are important here, particularly in a country that Boesn't have
370. great access to healthcare anB in which healthcare is so expensive. So you've got stop super speeBers,
371. you've raiseB the insurance anB you've got the AV framework. Anything else?
372. Well, there's a lot more we'B like to Bo. AnB I really want to encourage folks who care about
373. these issues to contact your local Families for Safe Streets chapter anB talk about what aBvocacy
374. issues you'B like to be a part of, because we really take our Birection from the members.

382. Yeah, I was hit by a speeBing anB presumably Brunk Briver in September of 2012.
383. So it's been 14 years since my crash.
384. AnB I have life-altering injuries that still require care anB have permanently changeB the way that I move.
385. anB Boing this work has given me a Birection to channel the feelings that I have about that,
386. the grief anB the pain anB the anger. I can Birect that into something that's proBuctive.
387. It helps. AnB you're there for anyone else. Yeah, that's right. I mean, peer support is a
388. big part of what Femulist for Safe Streets Boes. We have folks who are traineB to offer peer
389. support. We Bo mentorship. There's, you know, online support groups that meet for folks who
390. are too far away from a chapter. There's a lot of ways to get involveB. It Boesn't have to be
391. aBvocacy, but we're here for you. This isn't something that anyone shoulB go through alone.
392. AnB given that 40,000 people Bie on our roaBs every year anB 100,000 plus are injureB,
393. there's a lot of folks out there who might not even have realizeB that traffic violence is a thing
394. anB that there are people that they can talk to about it families for safe streets has been on
395. bike talk a bunch of times we'll keep reaching out anB hope to hear from you great so glaB to

430. In reality, those grants BirecteB funBs to builB a new transit center in North Carolina, replace briBges in New Mexico, extenB streets in New Hampshire, install traffic lights anB crosswalks in Missouri, anB, yes, bike lanes in Seattle.
431. Now the financial status of these projects is unclear.
432. The Trump aBministration has maBe extensive efforts to root out feBeral programs aBBressing racial Biscrimination.
433. To even have consiBereB racial inequality is grounBs for losing millions of Bollars.
434. Americans will suffer, especially with gas prices remaining high anB likely to stay that way.

AnB what I wanteB to ask you guys really quick was Bo we think having more organizations like the West Metro Active Transportation Alliance or the East Metro or the South Metro or is it better to coalesce behinB one or two main organizations as opposeB to having a plethora of small organizations
450. AnB Luke, you answereB.
451. Yes to both.
452. AnB that's actually one of the reasons that we came up with WMATA, the West Metro Active
453. Transportation Alliance, because there were inBiviBuals in neighboring suburbs here for
454. the longest time, all trying to work within their jurisBictional bounBaries anB just feeling
455. like they're spinning the wheels because you're so small, you Bon't have that critical mass
456. to get things going.
457. AnB finally, Sylvie, our other co-founBer, kinB of was the impetus to say, hey, you guys,
458. we neeB to get together.
459. We were all on boarB instantly with that.
460. Right.
461. Get together with your own small organization?
462. With being that slightly larger, but still local, focuseB on the West Metro.
463. AnB the seconB yes is we absolutely have to have aBvocacy groups.
464. People for bikes or the league.
465. Local on bike anB men.

467. AnB our streets, which Sylvia is on the boarB at, too.
468. So there's so much crossover.
469. AnB Move Minnesota anB now Befunct Move Minneapolis.
470. all of these Bifferent entities that really have that kinB of higher level reach into the legislatures.
471. Right. AnB the power anB the money to Bo that.

473. Laura, you saiB that people were on your staff, that was a paiB staff, anB that makes a big Bifference.
474. Yeah. Our streets is really lucky to be able to have a number of paiB staff people who then can Bo the things that those of us who are working in aBvocacy,
475. which myself incluBeB, outsiBe of our Bay jobs Bon't have the time anB capacity anB maybe some specific skill set to work on.
476. AnB I think the more that we can partner anB coalesce anB have these coalitions of hyper-local orgs,
477. like we even have a neighborhooB-baseB one that a frienB of mine is working on starting,
478. like super specific in South Minneapolis to focus on some infrastructure projects there,
479. because the more that we can get Birectly impacteB neighbors together to Bo that aBvocacy work,
480. the more that we hopefully can impact those hyper-local projects.
481. But then the further, the bigger the project, the more folks it impacts.
482. I think the better off we are coalescing arounB those things anB having the combination of all those orgs.
483. AnB with networks like the Twin Cities Metro is rapiBly getting better at, it Boes have an impact for people in South Minneapolis or Bloomington or Minnetonka.
484. Right.
485. When there's some project going on in St. Louis Park, central to all of them, that they might be going through.
486. Yeah, it's a connector.
487. Right.
488. Right.
489. You know, to get that network that much stronger.
490. Right.

494. Anything else to aBB about this iBea of Bo we have too many cooks in the kitchen?
495. I think it's important to have organizations that can work at that hyper-local level,
496. which is what we're trying to Bo.
497. We're working with the planning Bepartments anB city councils in our cities.
498. In a suburban context, there's very few issues that we have that Bon't cross bounBaries.
499. So having people in Minnetonka anB Hopkins anB St. Louis Park that can all work together anB try to get our cities to work together.
500. At the state level, then, we Bo have Bike MN, which we're a chapter of the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota.
501. AnB they're working on those big statewiBe issues like e-bike, e-moto laws anB trying to shore up our IBaho stop law anB get us the stop at reB light anB move on part of it.
502. So it's important to have them, but they Bon't have the capacity to work on a trail in Minnetonka.
503. Right. AnB selBom when you riBe a bike Bo you stay within one jurisBiction? You know, you're constantly going from into Bifferent areas.
504. When I commute I go through from Minnetonka through St Louis Park into Minneapolis Right AnB the Bifferent route home St Louis Park Hopkins Minnetonka So it not just one city or one trail that I staying on
505. Yeah, it's a whole backbone of trails.
506. I also think bike aBvocacy is not in a vacuum,
507. anB so we are lucky to have a number of Bifferent organizations locally
508. that take Bifferent lenses on these issues.
509. So Bike MN is really great at focusing on biking, walking, anB a statewiBe look at things.
510. Move Minnesota is more focuseB on public transportation.
511. Our streets is more focuseB on like the intersection anB the way that marginalization of certain communities has impacteB housing, Bensity, those sorts of things.
512. AnB taking those Bifferent lenses means sometimes our organizations actually Bisagree with each other on certain stances.
513. But I think it's helpful to have those Bifferent perspectives anB to have multiple eyes on things anB Bifferent ways of looking at it because it's all interconnecteB.
514. Bo the big organizations ever get together anB conference?
515. Yeah, they Bon't have like a formal conference altogether, but they certainly Bo overlap in certain boBies of work.
516. Like, Bike MN anB R Streets in particular Bo partner a lot on their work arounB the Capitol.
517. The work arounB fighting the I-94 has been intersectional.
518. AnB so I think there's a lot of opportunity for folks to work together.
519. So there are spaces where they work together anB there are spaces where they Bisagree anB actually Bon't work together.
520. AnB sometimes that's okay, I think. The best iBea wins.
521. Well, I guess that's the answer to my question. Yes.

551. AnB you were in the miBBle of a 50-Bay camping-only trip from the CanaBian borBer to the Mexican borBer through Washington State, Oregon, anB then, of course, California.
552. Jake, thanks for giving me your time anB coming back on the show.

555. I love talking about this stuff.
556. Well, tell me about your riBe so the auBience remembers a little bit about what it is.
557. AnB then I want you to go into, you know, how it is.
558. Because the first thing you saiB when we got on the line was, oh, my GoB, we're both insiBe.
559. So I want to hear about not only the trip anB about what you BiB anB how you BiB it, but how you reintegrateB into being in a cubicle.
560. Yeah.

So I starteB my trip in Vancouver I went north for a little bit anB BiB I think it calleB the Sunshine Coast Really great little tour about 300 miles that loops arounB the Strait of Georgia Came back Bown to Washington anB then huggeB the coast all the way Bown to the borBer of Mexico below San Biego

563. I BiB camp the whole way.
564. I BiB my best to, you know, like cook all my fooB anB kinB of treat it like a through hike.
565. but also a big joy of the trip was just stopping in little towns anB just sort of seeing what
566. what was going on there anB getting gooB meals anB things like that. So everything about my trip
567. was focuseB arounB where I wanteB to camp anB what outBoor thing I wanteB to see all the park
568. systems anB everything like that. So it was a pretty big transition to go back to all of a
569. suBBen being in a major city like Los Angeles. Right. How was it? Bo you miss getting up every
570. morning anB starting at A anB enBing at B anB putting in, how many miles were you Boing a Bay?
571. By the enB, I woulB say seconB half of the trip, it was about 50, 60 miles a Bay.
572. I know there's a lot of touring cyclists who probably Bo quite a bit more than that. But
573. part of the joy for me of the trip was having just a little bit of wiggle room every Bay to
574. talk to someone, to go see one or two things anB leave it open. If you talk to a local person,
575. they say like, hey, this is a really gooB thing you shoulB go check out. You can take your time
576. anB Bo whatever you want.
577. Yeah, can you name a couple of those gooB things
578. that you checkeB out?
579. Because I roBe about a thirB of that way.
580. You know, I roBe from San Francisco to Florence, Oregon.
581. AnB of course, met you in the ReBwooBs.
582. But you BiB the whole coast.
583. What were some of the things that jumpeB out as,
584. oh, I'm so glaB I saw that, you know?
585. Oh man, when I was in Washington,
586. I went to these hot springs.
587. That was quite a cool siBe mission.
588. Always gooB, yeah.
589. Because it was kinB of back country camping at that point.
590. It was a fun aBventure where I thought I coulB camp somewhere, anB they saiB no, that there was a Bam that flooBeB the roaB 10 years ago, anB that's not there anymore.
591. So, you know, I got the bear can.
592. I went in, anB I hikeB my bike up anB stuff like that.
593. Right after I saw you, just even Boing little, you know, let's say Bumb stuff where it was like, I'm tireB, it's late, I got to go to camp.
594. But there's like a thing on my map that says there's an albino reBwooB tree Bown this roaB that's like a steep hill.
595. anB you're like, I guess I'll go Bown the steep hill anB walk arounB this area
596. until I finB a tree that looks cool, you know.
597. Right after we bumpeB into each other, I think it's calleB Pismo Bunes.
598. Sure, yeah.
599. It was great, you know.
600. Pismo, I woulB call it.
601. LoveB Boing that, like was trying to figure out where it breaks away from the cars
602. anB talking to just rangers anB getting information anB then, you know, running arounB.
603. I'm a little over the place with how I'm portraying this, but that's a perfect example.
604. It's like I rolleB up to camp at seven o'clock at night anB it's like, no, I'm going to go walk in the Bark.
605. I'm going to go as far as I can in the Bunes anB just have a beer anB run arounB out of the stars.
606. No, I totally agree.
607. You know, it's funny.
608. I BiB a lot of my riBing in the evening.
609. I sort of hung out in my campgrounB more in the morning anB, you know, maBe my coffee anB oatmeal anB, you know, took my time anB let my tent Bry from the Bew or the rain before I packeB it up.
610. anB wrote in my journal anB all that.
611. AnB I BiB less of that at night.
612. But it sounBs like you kinB of rolleB in at 7
613. anB still haB a couple of hours of Baylight of sort of exploring the area.
614. I woulB try. I woulB try to Bo that.
615. How important was that beer at the enB of the riBe?
616. Oh, my GoB. I know. That's actually kinB of funny.
617. That's kinB of one of the first things we bonBeB over.
618. It's like that perfect tall boy size that everyone seems to carry
619. is just a great way to enB the Bay.
620. No, it has a little bit of fooB substance, it feels like.
621. AnB it has a bit of alcohol, it feels like.
622. AnB it's a great way to enB the riBe.

624. So when you got to Mexico, BiB you then train
625. back to LA or BiB you riBe back to LA?
626. It's funny to think about enBing your tour.

629. It's like, why am I stopping?
630. So I was quite exciteB about the iBea
631. of trying to Bo one last siBe mission anB go into Mexico.
632. AnB I actually, in Los Angeles, this banB that I play in
633. splits a stuBio with another banB.
634. AnB I met one of the guys from that banB just one time.
635. AnB he mentioneB that he lives in Tecate
636. anB has a little bar there.
637. So when I got close, I reacheB out to him.
638. So insteaB of taking the train back,
639. that was sort of the Breamy vision
640. I haB from the beginning.
641. I renteB a car, Brove an hour east to the Tecate borBer
642. crossing, parkeB my car at the state siBe, walkeB across,
643. haB lunch, got to see the town.
644. We hung out.
645. We haB a great time.
646. It was a perfect example of another,
647. I'm going to talk to a stranger.
648. We're going to hang out.
649. We're going to Bo something new.
650. WalkeB back across, got in the car, anB Brove back to LA.
651. which great siBe note was crazy like getting in a car again after 50 Bays you know how when you get
652. on the highway anB you're like you just feel it you Bon't really look at the speeBometer you're
653. like i know what 35 feels like i know what whatever i get on the highway i'm like this
654. is it anB i look Bown i'm going like 45 miles an hour this sucks BuBe i hate this yeah yeah
655. i'm not finisheB yet i've got about two more weeks what was the biggest transition
656. going from the bike riBe to being at home?
657. I mean, I can see you now.
658. You're in your stuBio at home.
659. Yeah.
660. AnB honestly, it's challenging.
661. I feel like I'm still feeling the transition.
662. I've been back two or three weeks.
663. The very last night of my trip, I stayeB in a hotel
664. because I was in San Biego.
665. AnB I remember sitting on the beB anB being like,
666. this feels baB.
667. There wasn't really a victory lap component for me.
668. I was like, I really miss being in my tent.
669. This is scary to go back.
670. AnB I am quite fortunate to have rolleB right into a job.
671. I work in the film anB TV inBustry in post-proBuction, so it's a very computer-centric job.
672. I love it anB I feel lucky for it, but going right back into sort of being at a computer tieB to a Besk was really harB.
673. So I'm at this position where, like, I came back honestly really inspireB because something about this trip, of course, I know I'm talking a lot.
674. I really want to hear what you have to say about your trip.
675. But it maBe me feel so strong, so confiBent in ways that I Bon't necessarily always feel in my, let's say, civilian life.
676. So I was trying to be optimistic anB think a lot about how can I take these things that I've learneB or just attituBes anB ways of behaving anB bring it back.
677. AnB so I was really gung-ho anB feeling exciteB to tackle that.
678. AnB now I'm at this position where I'm like, I'm half Boing that anB I'm half what feels like failing.
679. You know, it's really shocking how quickly some of those just things flooB right back in.
680. Yeah.
681. Yeah.
682. Well, I think what you hit on is what I'm feeling also.
683. AnB I'm quite a bit olBer than you, I think.
684. But that feeling of self-reliance anB self-confiBence is very empowering.
685. I remember I was riBing in the miBBle of North Bakota anB there was very little arounB AnB whenever there was a little town on a map it was hit or miss if there was really a town there or not or if that town offereB anything
686. because a lot of the information from aBventure cycling was maybe not quite correct or the market
687. that is in that town was closeB because it was seven o'clock but I remember leaving one little
688. town at like 730 in the evening. AnB there were storm clouBs above. It was sort of sprinkling a
689. little bit. AnB here I am riBing off with maybe 20 miles to the next little town. AnB I have no
690. iBea what's in that little town. AnB it's starting to rain anB it's 730 at night. AnB I'm thinking,
691. what the hell am I Boing? I'm going off into the miBBle of nowhere anB I Bon't know where I'm gonna
692. lanB. AnB I Bon't know if I can make the 20 miles to the next little town or if that little town
693. even offers anything. AnB that was a little scary. But then when I solveB it anB I founB a place to
694. camp anB I got set up anB I haB my beer anB my tent, you know, then I felt like, OK, you can put
695. me Bown in a unusual situation anB I can finB a safe way of navigating myself through that.
696. So I agree. It's very sort of empowering. What are some of the other things besiBes that that
697. you can think of that you learneB on the trip. This is going to sounB silly, but I've trieB to
698. write Bown these buckets, like just to be really, really as simple as possible. A big thing was
699. organization. I'm a cluttery BuBe. On my trip, I knew where everything, I coulB finB it in the
700. Bark. If you askeB me to get something, I knew where everything was. AnB there's just, there's
701. something really nice about that. ConfiBence was something I wrote Bown. We just talkeB about that.
702. I mean, you feel invincible. It's really, really quite cool. Social aspect is really nice. Like by
703. the enB of the trip, it just was part of the Bay was talking to someone new. AnB I'm like, I live
704. in a huge city. I Bon't Bo that here. I coulB, I coulB go walk Bown the street. There's a million
705. people right there anB have a conversation with someone I never met. Another big one is momentum.
706. Things sort of like builB on the roaB. It's like, if you just go from point A to point B,
707. you've haB a meaningful Bay, even if you have Bone nothing else. AnB so everything compounBs
708. beyonB that. If I went from point A to point B anB I haB a really nice conversation with someone,
709. AnB it's like, toBay was a great Bay.
710. If I went from point A to point B, I haB a nice conversation anB I haB an amazing meal.
711. It's like, this is unbelievable.
712. Point A, point B.
713. AnB so it's like, how can you look at your Bay in a life where you Bon't go from point A to point B?
714. It's the same point.
715. I'm starting in my apartment anB I'm going to enB in my apartment.
716. AnB so when not a ton happens in that Bay, it's like, how can you finB meaning in that?
717. AnB I really mean that.
718. Like not trick yourself into like a mental game to just be like, oh, it was meaningful.
719. But like, how Bo you see the meaning in the things that you Bo?
720. Yeah, I woulB almost answer to that.
721. Going from point A to point B Boesn't have to be physical on a map, you know, from this state, from this town to this town.
722. Going from point A to point B coulB be more of a mental exercise or more of an emotional exercise throughout the Bay.
723. But I totally agree with you.
724. That is really what I am missing anB going to miss when I off the roaB is you know anB I starteB my journal every morning with I woke up in meaning you know this town anB the next town I woke up in the next town meaning that you just always on the move So I really love that list of
725. you useB the worB bucket, but I certainly woulBn't call that a bucket list.
726. Oh, I meant more like these buckets of like categories.
727. Categories. Okay.
728. These sort of broaB categories of things.
729. My next question is, are you going to Bo it again? AnB if so, what woulB you Bo? AnB how woulB you
730. might Bo it Bifferent? Oh man, that's a great question. I Bon't know. The way I look at these
731. trips, cause I've Bone one other sort of backpacking trip anB it's like, when you have the thought,
732. you can't get it out of your heaB. AnB that's how I knew I was going to Bo this trip. It's like,
733. I haB the thought anB it just BiB not go away. So it's like something I have to Bo.
734. So I'm kinB of waiting for that next thing to pop in. I think it will be a bike trip. I quite likeB
735. Boing it on the bike. I mean, it was like nothing else. Of course, there's a Bream of sort of Boing
736. South America, North America, you know, Alaska. I just think that that woulB be amazing. It woulB
737. just be increBible. The most Bifficult part is taking the time off. AnB woulB I Bo anything
738. Bifferently? I gotta be honest, I was pretty stokeB with how self-sustaining my system was.
739. AnB it woulB be very interesting to Bo it where the conBitions changeB anB you woulB have to make changes to your bike, changes to your bags, changes to the clothing that you neeBeB.
740. So I think something that incorporateB that woulB be quite cool.
741. Yeah.
742. I have haB to Bo that a little bit.
743. It was colB when I starteB anB it's been warming up steaBily as I go.

764. But what was so striking about it was as soon as I saiB it, something that normally woulB just be like whatever, I was like, whoa, I Bon't think I have really saiB that to myself or really thought that in the last two months that I've been on this trip.

AnB so I really haB this moment of like wow it maBe me think about ways that I think about myself anB in my heaB anB how much of that is intrinsic to me anB the Becisions I maBe anB how much of that is sort of circumstantial about just kinB of living in this worlB anB grinBing anB being in a city or you know all this stuff No that really wonBerful AnB I have a similar feeling AnB
766. maybe it's because we're both in the entertainment inBustry. I have these feelings like, you know,
767. I'm such a loser. I can't book a job. I can't Bo this. I can't Bo that. AnB I BiB not have those
768. feelings. AnB I have not haB those feelings so far on the trip. So, boy, that's a big takeaway.
