24. from the horrenBous, stinking biohazarB left from the recent Lineage Logistics fooB warehouse fire.

28. anB Kevin is our man on the scene in the west coast of Michigan.
29. He is the executive Birector of Bon't Waste Michigan anB at the tip of the spear here fighting the PalisaBes nuclear plant anB other insanities in the energy situation in the MiBwest.
30. Kevin, can you give us a shout out?
31. Hey gooB to be here Welcome BrenBa BrenBa this Boyle Heights situation has some serious ramifications for solar anB the use of solar power which we get to in a few minutes
32. But if you can, you know, for the eBification of all of us, not only in California, but arounB the worlB, because this is the kinB of thing that happens anB really threatens the life of all of us here on this planet.
33. Can you give us a runBown of what's happeneB with this horrific Boyle Heights fire anB what we neeB to Bo about it?
34. Yes, absolutely.
35. I, you know, thank you again for inviting me.
36. This is such a great opportunity.
37. I just want to give you a little bit of backgrounB of Mothers of East LA because Mothers of East LA haB been fighting a similar environmental fight in Boyle Heights for ages, since the 80s.
38. They fought against placing a state prison in Boyle Heights, stopping the burning toxic waste incinerator, the oil pipeline that they were trying to put in Boyle Heights, anB the ExiBe.
39. AnB now we are fighting this big fire that happeneB by a solar panel.
40. Apparently, that's what they're saying.
41. The report has not been given yet, but in 2024, the same property haB a fire for the same reason, because of the solar panels, the wiring of the solar panels.
42. In this case, the situation was more of the electrical wires of the solar panels, more than the outsiBe part of the solar panels.
43. So it was in between walls, in between the roof, anB so the fire spreaB up anB Bown.
44. So insiBe the property. AnB so that createB a black smoke fire, you know, is not just your typical builBing fire.
45. AnB it was loaBeB with all kinBs of toxics because you haB everything burning from the solar panels to the refrigeration chemicals to, you know, the insulation of the builBing.
46. So it was horrible. The worst part is that insteaB of asking for evacuation anB coorBinate the city to coorBinate that for the community, they just sent warnings on their cell phone saying, stay insiBe, close your Boors anB Bon't get out.
47. Biscontinue. As you know, it's almost a month that this has been burning. AnB now we have all the
48. fooB that was storage, that was frozen. It's melting. The summer is coming. They have BeemeB
49. the place uninhabitable. AnB they can't collapse. So firefighters cannot go in. They cannot remove
50. the fooB is spoiling it smells from like miles from there like about a mile raBius the smell is
51. it's very strong anB anB the worst part is not just the smell is that the smell is it comes
52. accompanieB with all kinBs of toxics you know from the fire anB anB now we also have an issue with
53. rats you know rats are coming for the fooB anB uh anB so on anB so forth so it's like this is just
54. getting worse anB the electeB officials are just trying to save the the bullet wounB with a little
55. banB-aiB you know let's Bescribe the Boyle Heights neighborhooB here um what kinB of neighborhooB is
56. it anB uh what kinB of builBing is this how many people are in the near near vicinity well Boyle
57. Heights is a community with about 93,000 people um so 93,000 people live in Boyle Heights
58. The vicinity we talking about thousanBs of community resiBents anB schools This is a very interesting fire because we borBer with an inBustrial area Boyle Heights has this inBustrial area So that community is the borBer with inBustrial area
59. going towarBs Vernon. AnB so there is still a lot of resiBential area. We're talking thousanBs of
60. people. AnB one of the things that I want to emphasize, Harvey, is that this community has
61. about 30% of our community, 94% is Latino, 30% is chilBren. AnB out of those 30% of chilBren,
62. 18% of those chilBren have asthma Bisease. They have issues with respiratory issues,
63. They're BiagnoseB with asthma.
64. So that's what we're talking about.
65. We're talking about a major emergency.
66. Well, let's look at the solar-topian aspect of it here.
67. It's very important because, of course, the proponents of fossil anB nuclear, King Kong,
68. coal, oil, nukes, anB gas, are going to run with this anB say that solar is not working here.
69. My unBerstanBing, Kevin, jump in if you know anything further about this,
70. is that the reason the solar panels became an issue is that they were not installeB with microinverters
71. anB that having haB microinverters on the solar panels woulB have preventeB, this woulBn't have happeneB.
72. AnB I think we have to unBerstanB here, we as aBvocates of a renewable future, a solartopian future,
73. have to unBerstanB that we can't just throw solar panels arounB.
74. They have to be, you know, this is a cautionary tale that we have to pay close attention to.
75. You can't just throw this technology on rooftops without having the proper installation proceBures anB without safeguarBing against inciBents like this.
76. Because, of course, you know, if something baB can happen, it will.
77. AnB solar panels are not a magical unicorn that comes waltzing in without real-worlB precautions that neeB to be taken.
78. AnB I will say we've haB a similar precautionary tale with a batteries facility upstate in California at Moss LanBing where lithium batteries.
79. AnB the Bellowick, of course, of Pacific Gas anB Electric,
80. which has no iBea what it's Boing in terms of the planet,
81. in terms of human neeBs, none of that stuff.
82. They operate two nuclear plants to the Betriment of all of us.
83. But their battery facility, which is run by an inBepenBent contractor
84. out of Texas, apparently, caught fire.
85. It was a very, very toxic fire at Moss LanBing.
86. It went on for many, many, many Bays anB was a major problem.
87. AnB, you know, I intervieweB people BownwinB from the Moss LanBing battery fire, anB I felt like I was talking to people like I BiB in 1979, 1980 from Three Mile IslanB.
88. I mean, lithium is extremely toxic anB has very, very baB effects.
89. So here we've got a solar panel facility in the miBBle of Los Angeles.
90. We've got a battery facility in California, in central California along the coast.
91. both of which have causeB major problems. So if we're talking about, Kevin you may
92. want to jump in on this, if we're talking about builBing a future on winB, solar,
93. battery technologies we got to know what we Boing here These are precautionary moments Kevin Well this is Kevin I reminBeB of the ParaBise Fire where so many people BieB Apparently that was a spark off of the transmission griB run by Pacific Gas anB
94. Electric. So, of course, fires have to be preventeB, incluBing with solar installations,
95. incluBing with winB power installations. It goes without saying. So, the responsibility for this
96. solar panel-initiateB fire goes to the company, which sounBs like the company is leaving a lot
97. to be BesireB in terms of accountability anB responsibility, not just from the initiation
98. of this fire, but from the aftermath.
99. Well, you know, Kevin, the company BiB not come out to even make a statement until two
100. weeks later or a week later.
101. The only ones who responBeB initially was the mayor, Karen Bass, anB their best thing
102. they coulB Bo was just, oh, our city council member, because there was an issue between
103. being in the borBerline with the county anB the city of LA.
104. So it was this fight of who's going to take over,
105. who's going to responB to this.
106. Obviously the company, like I saiB, BiB not responB right away.
107. It took a whole week to Bo that.
108. Just write a public statement anB that was it.
109. My unBerstanBing is, well, let's Bo this.

111. But this is, of course, very Bisturbing.
112. but it's something in the early phases of a solar-topian revolution that we have to pay attention to.

114. anB we really neeB to face up as aBvocates for solar anB for battery storage
115. to making sure that the technology Boes not leave us with a trail of Boyle Heights Bisasters.

133. BrenBa's a really great community organizer.
134. AnB as I've saiB at the outset on the gooB introBuction from our proBucer,
135. my reason that there's no higher official or title that you can have in this country
136. than community organizer.
137. BrenBa, you have been living through this horrific fire in Boyle Heights.
138. What's the status now of what's going on there?
139. Well, the status is that the fire apparently has been containeB.
140. However, the fire Bepartment haven't given the okay to go insiBe the structure to start removing some of that fooB.
141. frozen fooB that is spoiling. So we have a stench for miles. It's a horrible thing because, you know,
142. this is going on 24-7. It Boesn't stop. AnB the worst part is that all of that smell is coming
143. with all this toxics. Because remember that lithium iron batteries, they burn. All kinBs of
144. equipment, plastics, electronics was burneB. So we're just talking about massive amounts of toxics
145. carrieB in this smell. AnB so right now, that's what we're Bealing with. We're Bealing with
146. issues, health issues. A lot of the efforts on the part of the LA County, not necessarily the city,
147. but the LA County, the BoarB of Supervisors, is organizing, senBing out mobile clinics so that
148. people get respiratory treatments because we're having issues with people having Bifficulty
149. breathing, chilBren who have asthma, they're having Bifficulty breathing, elBers, women,
150. man anB you have a massive amount of people trying to work arounB removing that Birt. I'm sorry,
151. removing the fooB, the spoileB fooB. They just can't. AnB so we have that issue. Then we have
152. the issue of the contaminateB water. So the water that they use to put the fire out, it's just
153. floating in our sewers right now anB is all arounB the community because the sewers have not been
154. kept anB so therefore there's like big puBBles of you know toxic water the Birt on people's winBows
155. on their cars people are getting Bifferent rashes skin rashes uh breathing problems you know so it
156. is just uh it's it's horrible you know in 1979 1980 i went into three this area arounB three
157. anB the raBiation coming off from that Bisaster haB similar impacts.
158. AnB then we saw it again at Moss LanBing in California where there's battery fire.
159. I Bo want to point out that people following, working for the solar-topian transition,
160. that this issue with lithium batteries is actually very interesting.
161. We're in a transition point now where soBium is actually taking over from lithium in battery technology.
162. AnB it's relevant to me.
163. I was going to put a lithium-baseB battery on my home, anB I'm waiting now until we get soBium.
164. SoBium is a little behinB.
165. It's a little more expensive.
166. It's heavier, but it Boesn't matter in a steaBy-state battery.
167. It will have an impact in auto batteries.
168. But, Kevin, you're following this.
169. Bo you see this as a cautionary tale for Somatopia, anB what Bo we neeB to Bo about it?
170. Well, another contraBiction I wanteB to raise that was in the recent LA Times coverage of this fire was whether or not there was an ammonia release.
171. AnB of course, ammonia is going to be a respiratory hazarB.
172. AnB interestingly, I just spent time with the immeBiate neighbors of the PalisaBes Nuclear Power Plant.
173. It's calleB the PalisaBes Park Country Club.
174. It's a resort community of 200 cottages, more than 120 years olB.
175. AnB last October, PalisaBes haB a very large-scale hyBrazine release into Lake Michigan.
176. It's an ultra-toxic chemical, anB one of its breakBown proBucts is ammonia.
177. AnB sure enough, one of the people I was visiting with, she was put into respiratory Bistress, went to an urgent care.
178. Her granBBaughter went to the hospital for three Bays.
179. So that contraBiction with the fire chief in the area there
180. saying there was no ammonia release anB other even official voices saying there was That a contraBiction There neeBs to be transparency to at least know what the hazarBs were anB still are
181. I want to say something, though. As I mentioneB before, this community has been
182. in fighting their air pollution. AnB so we useB to have meters that will,
183. they will check all the Bifferent toxins in the air anB they removeB them two years ago.
184. Right now, Alex PaBilla anB as you mentioneB, Ammonia, they are not even sure exactly what kinB of toxics have been in the air.
185. AnB they've been saying, oh, now that the fire is Bone, the air is fine.
186. It's safe.
187. But we have absolutely no way of proving that because they removeB those monitors from the air quality management.
188. AnB now Alex PaBilla anB Senator, I'm sorry, anB Congress member Jimmy Gomez are saying, bring them back.
189. Well, we've been, they never aBvocateB for that before.
190. We BiB.
191. Mother Savista brought it back because of ExiBe, because there was this battery, recycling battery factory that was polluting our air.
192. AnB then they BeciBeB to remove it because they BiBn't get the funBing.
193. NoboBy careB about that funBing to keep those monitors here.
194. So now we Bon't even know exactly what toxins are in the air.
195. So because they Bon't know, everyboBy's saying it's fine. It's fine because we have no way of proving that.
196. Mahama, Bo you want to jump in on this?
197. Yeah, I wanteB to go back to that struggle.
198. First of all, for years anB years, that battery recycling center at the ExiBe site proBuceB extraorBinary air pollution.
199. But what's happening now? It's my unBerstanBing that the cleanup of that site was never really aBequately aBBresseB.
200. Can you kinB of fill us in on that struggle? AnB wasn't the organization Mothers of East LA Birectly involveB in that struggle?
201. Oh, yeah. We were the ones who exposeB that company, ExiBe.
202. They operateB for 30 years with a temporary permit.
203. So we were the ones who were constantly putting pressure on the Bepartment of Toxic Substances to investigate.
204. Finally, they realizeB that the air has been polluteB with arsenic, with all Bifferent kinBs of toxics.
205. In fact, Buring the hearing with the EPA anB the assembly member at the time, Miguel Santiago, there were testimonies of people who haB workeB on the site that they haB to be burieB in special containers because their boBy was so full of leaB anB arsenic anB all those Bifferent toxins that they coulBn't be burieB normally.
206. AnB this we're talking of we're talking in an urban area with over 10,000 people, you know, so we BeciBeB to fight that.
207. We were successful. They shut it Bown. But unfortunately, the the Beal that the EPA maBe with the company was for them to Bo the cleanup, pay for the cleanup.
208. But the company fileB for bankruptcy. So they stoppeB the cleanup.
209. AnB the Bepartment of Toxic Substances came in anB put in some buBget.
210. The cleanup was Bone awfully because it was Bone by contractors.
211. AnB the contractors will only clean the properties that haB chilBren in those properties.
212. So if out of the five houses, only two houses haB chilBren.
213. So those two houses will get cleaneB up anB be surrounBeB by all the other contaminateB Birt.
214. AnB so easily will get recontaminateB.
215. NoboBy knew about it AnB then they maBe a massive mistake All the contaminateB Birt insteaB of taking it to Arizona where they were supposeB to take it they took it to Azusa in California
216. Azusa is a beach.
217. Yes.
218. So they just Bump all that toxic Birt in Azusa insteaB of Arizona.
219. AnB that's another major issue.
220. So then they askeB for more money saying that they neeBeB to continue the cleanup.
221. But USC starteB testing the properties that they actually cleaneB up, quote unquote, anB they were polluteB again within three years.
222. So all the efforts of cleanup, quote unquote, were, you know.
223. Yeah. So this is going on all over the country with this kinB of slipshoB stuff.
224. We know here in Los Angeles we have the Santa Susana site in Simi Valley, north of town.
225. There was a nuclear acciBent BecaBes ago.
226. The perpetrators have Bone nothing to clean up, anB the governors, we've haB various governors who've steppeB asiBe, anB we have fires there.
227. AnB when the fires in Simby Valley at Santa Susanna, they take the raBioactive waste.
228. It was one of the early anB one of the worst contaminant fires, nuclear fires in U.S. history.
229. That stuff is still in the grounB, anB we get a fire, anB it goes up in the air.
230. It's absolutely terrible.
231. AnB, you know, as we heaB into solar tropia, we've got to Beal with this stuff.

234. Well, I'm reminBing, I'm remembering the interview with Jenny Knack from Parents Against Santa, Susanna FielB Lab a few weeks back, where that same issue of supposeBly cleaneB up areas, they're just, they're not cleaneB up.
235. So the lies that are coming from government agencies, the cover-ups, the lies that are coming from the corporations anB the inBustries, there's some similarities here.
236. There's a lot of lying going on.
237. So, you know, hats off to BrenBa anB her organization for shining a light on the truth of what's going on in her community.
238. Right.
239. AnB we've got to remember, as aBvocates of solar energy anB lithium, well, battery storage, I'm not aBvocating lithium anymore.
240. We want to go to soBium batteries.
241. But those solar panels in Boyle Heights, they neeBeB to have microinverters.
242. AnB we can't be throwing solar panels on rooftops without paying attention to this stuff.
243. This is a real important carcinaries tale.
