313. but my dad and mom didn't get along
314. so my dad got custody of me and Jimmy
315. and so we were there with him
316. and he had to work
317. so Jimmy was like my third father
318. for all those years.
319. I had to go to his first practices.
320. I was there when he first got his first guitar.
321. I was there when he got the ukulele
322. with the one string
323. and he played and we used to listen to Muddy Waters and you know all those old blues guys you know on the radio True that
324. Wow.
325. So tell me his aura.
326. Was he like you as a little brother?
327. Was he protective of you?
328. Yes.
329. Yeah.
330. My dad said, if anything happens to you, to me, we're going to give you a whooping.
331. And, you know, my daddy, well, you know, and so sometimes I get in trouble and then Jimmy would take the weapon for me.
332. He said, no, I did it. So, you know, he could take it.
333. Well, I'll tell you what we're going to do at this time.
334. We're going to listen to your father speaking of Jimmy, because what happened was I guess he got custody, like you said.
335. Here we go.
336. I know kind of around that Presley rage, I don't know, when I first noticed that he got interested in guitar.
337. I used to notice that where we stayed at, I used to have him clean up the bedroom all the time while I was gone.
338. And when I come home, I find a lot of broom straws around the foot of the bed.
339. I asked him, I said, well, didn't you sweep the floor?
340. He said, oh, yeah, he did, but I found out later
341. he used to be sitting at the foot of the bed there
342. strumming the broom like he was playing the guitar.
343. And I thought, where all this brass straw come from?
344. Oh, I found an old ukulele that
345. go out of one of my jobs.
346. Didn't have all the strings, so
347. he got strings for it.
348. He used to plunk away on that.
349. He got good, of course, only so far as you go with the ukulele.
350. But then there was a friend of mine,
351. oh, he had this acoustic guitar.
352. He wanted to sell it for $5.
353. So Jimmy told me about it, and I said, okay.
354. I gave him the money, and he strummed away on that,
355. and he used to be working away on that all the time.
356. Any spare time he had, he used to be playing the guitar.
357. So after he got good on that, I went and got him a electric guitar.
358. And, well, he played with various groups.
359. Oh, local groups around, teenage dances and parties
360. and quite happy with things like that,
361. or just little gigs on their own.
362. Oh, that's the way it went with him.
363. I mean, just, it ought to be strumming on him.
364. Okay, so that actually came from, let me put everybody back up.

367. It wasn't exactly true what he said, though.

369. Okay, the one-string ukulele is right.
370. You know, we were cleaning out of the garage, and Jimmy said, can I have this?
371. you know uh and they said you can have everything in the garage i just want the garage cleaned up
372. so uh miss mckay we we used to have a rooming house with this miss mckay that lived up on
373. in seattle on the hill and uh she had this old raggedy guitar sitting out there you know
374. he had a couple of strings on his stuff and uh jimmy said can he have it and she said no
375. you give me five dollars
376. and so my dad so Jimmy asked my dad for five dollars my are you crazy I ain spending on no damn guitar So my auntie my auntie gave Jimmy the to buy the guitar
377. Boy, those aunties, aren't they great?
378. We love our aunties.
379. They like, they spoil us.
380. Go ahead.

382. I know.
383. And a grandmama.
384. So that's how, that's how that worked out, you know?
385. So anyway, you know, Jimmy was, you know, born Johnny Allen Hendricks, you know.
386. You know, he was called Johnny for five years before my dad found him in Berkeley, California.
387. So when he came home, my dad said, I'm going to change your name because, you know, I don't like Johnny because Johnny is the name of your mother's boyfriend.

391. He said, I'm going to say I'm changing your name to James.
392. And he said, my name is Johnny.
393. My name is Johnny.
394. You know, because he'd been called Johnny for five years by everybody, all the aunties and uncles and stuff like that.
395. So every time my dad would call him James, he wouldn't answer.
396. He said, my name is Johnny.
397. And so finally, Jimmy made his own name up.
398. He said, I'm going to make my name called Buster.
399. You know, because Buster was his favorite on Flash Gordon back in the 50s, you know, the space show.
400. So, you know, Buster Crabb, you know, did that.
401. So he said, that's a good name.
402. So we we start calling him Buster, you know, and we call him Buster James.
403. You know, that was that was his name.
404. So my dad, my dad said, OK, cool.
405. You know, so he became Buster.

448. He was based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky for his brief career as a paratrooper.
449. Yeah.
450. I was in the Army for about 13 months, because I got tired of that.
451. It was very boring.
452. And so I pretended that I hurt my back.
453. I really did break my ankle, so I got out like that, you know.
454. So I started playing around all over the South.
455. You know, we had a band in Nashville, Tennessee.
456. And I got tired of playing in that because, you know,
457. they don't want to move anywhere.
458. They just want to stay there.
459. So I started traveling around.
460. I went to New York and won first place in the Apollo amateur contest.
461. $25.
462. So I stayed up there, starved up there for about two or three weeks.
463. And then I got the Eyes of the Brothers.
464. I went to a shop.
465. I asked if I liked to play with them, so I played with them for a while.
466. And I got very bored, you know, because you get very tired of playing behind other people all the time.
467. So then I quit them in Nashville somewhere.
468. And I went with this guy who was on a tour with Lee the King, Jackie Wilson, and Sam Cooke,
469. you know, and all these people, Chuck Jackson.
470. So I played, I was playing guitar behind a lot of the acts on the tour.
471. And then I got stranded in Kansas City because I missed the bus, you know.
472. So I was in Kansas City, Missouri and didn't have any money.
473. You know, this group came up and brought me back to Atlanta, Georgia,
474. where I met Little Richard and started playing with him for about five or six months.
475. And I got tired of that, you know, and played some shows with Ike and Tina Turner.
476. Then I went back to New York and played with Kane Curtis and Joy D.
477. But all the time I was playing behind these different groups.
478. And then I played with this little rhythm blues group named Curtis Knight and the Squires.
479. And I made a few records, you know, a range of few songs for him.
480. It was during the early 1960s that Jimmy made some of his first studio recordings.
481. One now believed lost with Steve Cropper in Nashville,
482. and this single recorded in Los Angeles with Rosalie Brooks called My Diary.

484. I know that I will be my only friend.
