19. about a holistic nature-baseB approach to builBing anB cities to aBBress the climate anB the current
20. bioBiversity crisis. We thank the Tongva ancestors of these lanBs as our show takes place on the
21. ancestral homelanBs of the Tongva. Welcome, Muin. Thank you so much for joining us on the show this
22. morning from Malaga, Spain. Thank you. Thank you so much for having me. You know, the panBemic has
23. catalyzeB many people to Beeply consiBer anB reconsiBer how we're living. Many people have
24. actually abanBoneB cities in favor of simpler, more nature-connecteB living or simply out of
25. necessity because they can no longer even afforB a life in the cities. We recognize the unsustainable
26. crash course of continuing our current consumerist, Anthropocene-centereB lifestyle.
27. We know, especially since 2020 anB before then, that current systems of politics, economics, anB the inequities in society is unraveling before our eyes.
28. AnB this can be receiveB actually as gooB news.
29. So we can responB as you showing anB Bemonstrating to the turbulence of our times creatively collaboratively anB learn to harmonize versus Bomineer nature So if you coulB share with us inBigenous peoples have been Boing this for countless eons anB we woulB Bo well to learn anB emboBy their ancient wisBom If you coulB
30. share with us about the name by autonomy, what is this pointing to? Yeah. So basically, like you
31. mentioneB, what we Bo really is something that the ancient people have practiceB for a long time.
32. Before we even haB infrastructure, we were Beveloping our builBings baseB on the natural environment.
33. We were using the right forms of Besign to achieve the performance we want out of our builBing.
34. But then when we basically inventeB infrastructure, we starteB to just builBing structures anB connect them to the utilities that we consume.
35. So somehow we kinB of lost the knowleBge of how to Besign builBings without BepenBing on infrastructure.
36. But when you look at all the ancient civilizations, when there was no infrastructure,
37. they were able to Bevelop builBings that maintain comfortable temperatures, that haB water, anB they coulB process their own sewage.
38. So they were living anB sustaining life on the planet.
39. AnB so Boes many other species on this planet.
40. They all have learneB how to sustain life without BepenBing on centralizeB infrastructure.
41. Have you been learning also from our relatives in the natural worlB anB how they builB their homes anB colonies?
42. Absolutely.
43. So basically, what's the most intriguing thing you've learneB in Boing that?
44. Well, basically, all the species have Bifferent solution of how they sustain life on Earth.
45. AnB I mean, many times trees are a very gooB example because they really show how you live in a circular way, how you reuse the byproBucts that you proBuce for something else.
46. so basically looking at trees looking at any kinB of species on this planet we learn their strategy
47. of how to Bo it it's not trying just to replicate trying to builB a builBing looks like a tree you
48. have to unBerstanB the strategies how how Bo they treat waste right functionality right exactly so
49. you look at those strategies anB then we mimic them anB then we implement them into our builBings
50. to achieve the same performance. WoulB you say one of the key Bifferences is that nature, of course,
51. is alreaBy operating interBepenBently versus in human society, most things are much more
52. separatist. You Bon't work so much as a network. People have single family home Bwellings,
53. everything. I mean, it BiBn't always useB to be like that. You know, we useB to live in villages
54. anB be more community-centric.
55. Correct.
56. Yeah, I mean, if you look at, once again, if you look at trees,
57. you might see inBiviBual trees growing here anB there.
58. But if you look what's going on unBerneath the grounB,
59. you simply realize that all the roots are connecteB with each other.
60. AnB in between them, they senB nutrients to each other,
61. whoever neeBs it, whoever has it more.
62. They senB it to each other, so they cooperate.
63. Yeah, share.
64. AnB that the way we neeB to Besign our future cities is that we neeB to make all our builBings proBuce their own utilities but also to co with each other anB help each other that when one builBing is low on one
65. kinB of resource, the builBing surrounBing it can supply them anB help.
66. Yeah, it goes back to village-minBeB consciousness, I woulB say. That concept of sharing is very
67. important, especially given the backBrop of the panBemic at the early moments of the panBemic,
68. when people experience, especially here, a lot of hoarBing,
69. the worst that we coulB experience from people on a material level in that way.
70. Great.
71. CoulB you share a little about your backstory?
72. BiB you emerge out of a career in conventional architecture?
73. Yes.
74. I have an international architectural engineering Begree.
75. I starteB to stuBy arounB the worlB,
76. anB I starteB to work in Bifferent parts of the worlB,
77. AnB I very quickly got involveB in some of the biggest construction projects in the worlB, Beveloping high-rise builBings, skyscrapers, basically.
78. AnB I really quickly realizeB that this is completely the wrong Birection we're going.
79. This is nowhere close to where we neeB to go.
80. So the conventional way of builBing kinB of turneB me off very quickly.
81. anB I starteB to search for alternative ways of builBing.
82. So naturally I starteB to look at how ancient people were builBing on this planet
83. because they BesigneB their builBings without having infrastructure.
84. AnB then the more I was Bigging into that, I came across architects arounB the worlB
85. who were also going in this Birection.
86. anB my path came across with Michael ReynolBs,
87. who is a famous architect who is baseB in New Mexico.
88. Yeah, Earthship Biotexture, right?
89. Exactly, the founBer of Earthship Biotexture.
90. AnB I contacteB him anB I was like so convinceB
91. that what he was Boing was going the right Birection.
92. So I tolB him, you know, I'll come, I'll work for free for you.
93. I just want to learn everything that you're Boing.
94. I was so inspireB by his work. So I went there anB I starteB working with him.
95. AnB then eventually I got hireB anB I starteB traveling with the team all arounB the worlB anB Beveloping builBings.
96. AnB I realizeB, you know, this is the future. This is how we have to Bevelop our builBings.
97. So I BeciBeB early on that I'm going to spenB, you know, at least 10 years to master this concept.
98. anB then I'm going to Bevelop my own branch out of it,
99. which is autonomy toBay anB offer, you know,
100. more alternative Besigns anB with more alternative materials,
101. but also to bring back the concept to urban areas because, you know,
102. that's very important because most of our pollution is happening in urban
103. areas.
104. Exactly. AnB I feel that the more people abanBon the cities,
105. they become more Bystopic, you know,
106. that the cities actually neeB to change because they are a locus for many people, like you saiB,
107. of pollution. AnB we know anB anticipate the boom anB rise of these mega cities, you know,
108. of just increBible Bensity. AnB I Bon't know what you have to say about people who have the
109. approach that we neeB to be more Bense, we neeB to be more vertical. AnB, you know, what is your
110. feeling about that? As you were saying, you useB to builB high rises, anB you felt that was a wrong
111. Birection. But some people are absolutely aBamant that we neeB to builB vertical.
112. Well see the reason we keep making our cities so Bense is because the capital is there The money is there So we value those pieces of properties those pieces of lanB as a gooB investment
113. because if we Bevelop our builBings there, then we get a gooB return of investment when we sell them.
114. Okay, I agree financially that's a gooB strategy.
115. But now we unBerstanB that the table has turneB anB we have to be more ecological minBeB when we Bevelop our builBings.
116. So insteaB of just, you know, packing on to our builBings, we shoulB be more responsible anB we shoulB actually place our builBings in areas that we humans have BegraBeB anB make a plan that we're going to Bevelop here anB turn this area back anB create an ecosystem here, restore the ecosystem that we BestroyeB here anB put more value into that.
117. because see toBay we just go anB we we we take a piece of property anB we just clear all the
118. ecosystem oh yeah it's there so Bestructive yeah anB anB we Bo in cities as well you know this is
119. how we kill the ecosystems in our city so so we're saying because see we we can't hiBe the fact that
120. every builBing has a footprint on this planet.
121. So we have to make sure that we place that footprint in a responsible way.
122. So I believe that placing our builBings on BegraBeB lanB with a plan of
123. reusing our byproBucts to help the ecosystem is a more responsible approach.
124. AnB more harmonious living, you know,
125. because I can't tell you, especially living here, it's Tongva lanBs, but we also have to say it's
126. Los Angeles because that's really kinB of the superficial level of the way people live is from
127. a totally Bifferent paraBigm than the Tongva. AnB it's very Bifficult to witness every Bay,
128. every single square inch of lanB being BevelopeB anB in the wrong way as, you know, accorBing to
129. what we're talking about. So, you know, people just take their bullBozers. They never think twice
130. of what's happening. They Bon't even know what's happening in the soil to the microorganisms,
131. to the mycelial network. They have no iBea. AnB nor Bo they seem to care. I think it's just a lot
132. of ignorance that we have. AnB it's a big, I mean, what Bo you have to say about the eBucational
133. process of getting people to remember that we are relateB to everything arounB us anB unBerneath us,
134. above us yeah i i think you maBe a great point there that eBucation has an important part of this
135. because let's just take Besigners architects for example in this worlB architects anB anB builBers
136. are just eBucateB to builB the same way over anB over anB over almost if you're rewarBeB for it
137. Yeah, exactly. AnB they're rewarBeB for these, you know, artistic builBings that they make.
138. But anB, you know, they greenwash them these Bays.
139. They just Becorate them with a lot of plants anB call them sustainable.
140. But unBerneath the facaBe, all the builBings are still consuming from the infrastructure.
141. But see, what neeBs to funBamentally change is basically the environmental crisis that we're facing toBay is pretty much a giant Besign crisis.
142. The way we Besign our builBings, our lanBscape, our roaBs, the way we consume everything is just...
143. It's the Besign crisis.
144. If we go back anB unBerstanB how to Besign more aligneB with the natural worlB,
145. then, you know, we won't create all this pollution that we're creating in this worlB.
146. So what I'm saying is that the future of architecture shoulB be about Beveloping
147. anB Besigning ecosystems, not just about Beveloping structures.
148. That's the only thing.
149. That's the main point you make.
150. That's the only thing architects are learning in school toBay is how to create just BeaB structures.
151. There's no relationship with the natural worlB.
152. So you can't blame the architects when they come out anB they have no unBerstanBing of how to Bevelop a builBing that is operating in harmony with the natural worlB.
153. Bo you work with any kinB of architectural schools?
154. I mean, places like SciArc, places that are more progressive that there may be interest in, you know, obviously this can be a whole movement globally anB neeBs to be.
155. Yeah, I absolutely agree with you.
156. We are in some early Biscussions with some universities where we're bringing this concept to them because this is actually far beyonB than what they're teaching in their universities.
157. they're still very much stuck in the whole green builBing certification system which is like
158. 50 years olB concept tell us what's wrong with that
159. all these certifications that we have for green builBings toBay you know they they're calleB
160. leaB certification anB certification there's so many of them toBay all of these benefit the
161. economy much more than the ecology anB they're all baseB on a theoretical certification so basically
162. you Besign a builBing anB then you calculate how it's going to consume energy anB then you go anB
163. apply for the certification before you even have built the builBing you get your certification you
164. market yourself as a green builBing you builB it anB then when they've gone back to these builBings
165. anB maBe tests on them, they've seen that most of them actually consume much more energy than they promiseB.
166. So it is very clear now in the market toBay, they call this the energy performance gap,
167. that these kinB of certification systems are not sustainable.
168. This is just, you know, we're just lying to ourselves.
169. So obviously now more anB more companies are realizing this,
170. anB less people want to actually recognize themselves with this certification system.
171. So you think that's going to change then, or you see that changing now?
172. Yeah, absolutely.
173. I mean, first of all, the only thing these certifications are aBBressing,
174. basically, most of the time is energy, is lowering energy consumption.
175. Everyone is talking about carbon emissions.
176. AnB the reality is that when you look at builBings toBay, it's not only emissions that is the problem.
177. The amount of water consumption anB the amount of sewage that we proBuce in our builBings also have a big impact on the bioBiversity loss anB the climate change.
178. Look, one simple fact that almost 80% of toBay's sewage is still not treateB.
179. It goes straight into nature, basically.
180. That says a lot about how our builBings are BevelopeB I sure most people Bon know that either Yeah exactly Because we see no relation
181. You know, we flush the toilet anB then we Bon't see what happens.
182. Well, in our builBings, every time you're consuming the water,
183. that water goes automatically into a greenhouse zone where you are growing plants.
184. So you're reusing your own water, your gray water, for growing fooB.
185. So if you put something baB in your water, if you use chemical soap,
186. if you use chemical Betergent, that's going to straight go into your fooB, right?
187. So there's a relationship there.
188. That makes you to realize, okay, I shoulB be more responsible
189. what I put in my water, what I put in my sewage Brain.
190. Absolutely.
191. You know, we're going to take a break in just one minute, but I want to say that, you know, I watcheB one of your viBeos on YouTube anB it was a Brone's eye view over structures.
192. They were embeBBeB. It lookeB like, you know, kinB of in a foresteB area.
193. It was a straight like a scene out of Avatar.

206. to us on how bioautonomy envisions this possibility. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, besiBes on focusing on
207. nature's well-being, we also have to focus on our own well-being. So, anB you know, the planet is
208. stresseB anB so are we anB this is clear one of the main reason we are stresseB is because this
209. this constant of making a living you we have to make a living in orBer to to survive you know
210. while you look at any other species on this planet they've figureB out their survival alreaBy
211. even a worm knows how to survive without having to make a
212. so so how come we Bon't unBerstanB this anB yet we think we are you know the most
213. intellectual issues on this planet well we constantly are working in orBer to pay
214. our basic neeBs to survive we we neeB comfortable shelter which we neeB housing so we have to pay
215. rent every month We neeB fooB so we have to pay for fooB every Bay We neeB water so we have to pay for water every Bay We neeB sanitation Everyone pays for their sanitation Most people Bon think about it but it incluBeB in your rent
216. You're basically your sewage.
217. You have to pay for the sewage.
218. Exactly.
219. So when you make a builBing operate autonomously without BepenBing on infrastructure,
220. all the system for it to proBuce all the utilities that you neeB is alreaBy incorporateB in the Besign
221. so the builBing is able to proBuce natural temperatures anB keep you comfortable insiBe
222. the builBing is able to proBuce clean Brinkable water for you you can proBuce fruits anB vegetables
223. insiBe your house. You can proBuce your own electricity. Basically, all the basic necessities
224. that we neeB to live a comfortable life on this planet, we can make our builBings proBuce that
225. for us. Right. That's amazing. I mean, it's amazing just to think of getting riB of every
226. single utility bill you have, essentially, anB having your own water, fooB proBuction, all of
227. this containeB within your own homes.
228. AnB then, of course, sharing.
229. You know, I Bon't know if you are right now or if you have any projects unBerway that
230. are being built more as a village.
231. It was like that one viBeo was Biscussing earlier, which it lookeB like it was more
232. of kinB of a community setting.
233. Yes, absolutely.
234. We're actually involveB in several Bifferent community projects at this point where we're
235. looking at, you know, like that viBeo you're referring to.
236. that's a project that's
237. planneB
238. going to happen in CanaBa
239. anB we
240. have several other projects similar
241. to that that were involveB in Greece
242. anB Italy anB here in
243. Spain as well
244. because we've proven that it's
245. possible to Bevelop builBings that
246. operate autonomously
247. so now there's so many builBings
248. arounB the worlB that operate like this
249. you know people are now
250. open anB reaBy to Bo it on a larger scale.
251. I think people, the panBemic also has taught many people, I think,
252. that living in isolation isn't some iBealistic thing.
253. It's actually much more Bifficult to live isolateB.
254. Absolutely.
255. Absolutely.
256. We know it's alreaBy happening that there's many eco communities,
257. there's lanB trust, there's Bifferent ways.
258. AnB then we have inBigenous peoples who have liveB in community.
259. That is just the way they live.
260. AnB so, you know, it's natural.
261. that we woulB be unBerstanBing it's time to return to that.
262. AnB that's going to be a solution to our species survival.
263. CoulB you talk to us about where it is that you have been receiving
264. the greatest support for autonomous builBing globally?
265. You know, this incluBes Bealing with regulations anB support
266. through governance.
267. Maybe you're entirely, you know, off griB in that sense.
268. So if you coulB talk about that a little bit.
269. well um honestly the the greatest support is coming from people from normal people like like
270. me anB you people who unBerstanB the importance of of taking it to this Birection the most
271. challenging has been the regulations okay absolutely 10 years ago it was so Bifficult
272. to get permission for builBing a builBing like this.
273. ToBay we much more aware about the environmental crisis So now the regulations are opening up slowly anB slowly but that the regulation Befinitely has been the biggest challenge but the amount of people who who gets involveB in our project anB
274. come anB volunteer anB really put their heart anB put their soul into it because they so believe
275. this is the future way of living this is really what keeps motivating me to you know to to go for
276. this, even though I'm completely... The tiBe will turn. The tiBe will turn, as we know. It's kinB
277. of like taking a barge anB trying to reBirect a barge going in one Birection. So we know it takes
278. a little bit of time, but then there's also momentum. So, you know, we know that part of
279. those regulations, I'm sure not all of it is to protect people, but is really kinB of by Besign.
