84. She was an African artist
85. who globally popularized African music,
86. but she was also a civil rights activist
87. born in Johannesburg,
88. and her professional career began
89. when she was featured in the South African jazz group
90. the Manhattan Brothers in the 1950s,
91. and she made her U.S. debut on November 1, 1959,
92. on the Steve Allen Show, which was something I was trying to find online.
93. And joining me, as promised, a very familiar voice to the KPFK airwaves and our audience,

97. What a sound.
98. What an amazing, amazing voice.
99. You know, some of us heard first of this amazing singer, Miriam Makeba, going back to the 1960s because for a long time she was associated with none other than one of the giants of the civil rights movement, Harry Belafonte, who mentored her and who helped her migrate to this country.
100. And this is how she ended up, as you said, on the famous Steve Allen show, which, by the way, if you remember Steve Allen, he came through KPFK several times here back in the day.
101. And he reminisced about all those years when he had all these incredible voices such as Marion Makeba.
102. Miriam Makeba, to those of you who may not be familiar with,
103. long before the great voices of today's African female voices,
104. such as the great Angelique Kidjo, Umu Sangare,
105. all these great singers that have come about,
106. all of them, every one of them mentions Miriam Makeba as the light,
107. as the one that paved the way for them.
108. before anybody, who's anybody,
109. Miriam Makeba was there.
110. And she was there from the very beginning.
111. And it's so incredible to listen to all of these songs, Maggie,
112. because we have to remember the influence of American jazz.
113. Black music was influencing the Manhattan Brothers,
114. Miriam Makeba, the Skylarks,
115. the group that she was a part of for many years.
116. And then after that, she became, you know, sort of a solo artist.
117. But she began, you know, as a kind of a backup singer in these groups that were singing these kind of American influence, jazz influence songs, traditional songs of South Africa back in the day.

147. But Beto, I found that, you know, searching for the Steve Allen performance, I did find something very interesting from an interview that Miriam did in 1969 in Finland.
148. And we're going to play just an excerpt of it.
149. But before we do that, Beto, you want to go back and tell the listeners what we heard in that first set.
150. It was a lot of music because the songs, a lot of different songs, because the songs are very short.
151. This is like playing, you know, DJing a rhythm and blues hour.
152. Well, it was, you know, it was when songs had to be short because, you know, there was a whole issue of, you know, making sure that the song would fit in a certain playlist with, you know, with radio stations.
153. We heard the click song.
154. We heard Um Gakanga.
155. We heard Ligua Wechi.
156. We heard Utando Luyapela, Mbube, which is a song that people in this country know as Wimowe, because back in the 50s, yes, Mr. Pete Seeger recorded the song.
157. But it was a song that was originally composed by a South African composer and sadly never got to do until much later when he finally, you know, went back into the archives and figured out that that song was actually not public domain, but it was written by somebody.
158. And I think that he had passed away, but that the family.
159. The family.
160. Yes.
161. Got at least some recognition and some rights and some royalties because this became, of course, a worldwide massive hit.
162. Mbube, the original name of the song was Mbube, but in the U.S. it was known as Wimoway.
163. The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
164. So Nagula is the song we heard also called the Witch Doctor song.
165. And the last one was called Intendane.

170. So let's take a listen to an excerpt from this interview, Beto, from 1969 in Finland.

172. Does Makeba, are people happy in Johannesburg?
173. That depends on which people you're talking about.
174. When we speak of people in Johannesburg, we have to be specific.
175. in that in South Africa there are two separate communities
176. and that's the white community and the black community.
177. I will speak for my community.
178. I think we are happy, we dance, we sing
179. because to us sometimes it's better to laugh to keep from crying.
180. Mrs. Makeba, you sing your songs in a lot of countries
181. and obviously, quite obviously
182. it is not only purely show business
183. actually, which is the message you want to give
184. to transmit to your public, to your listeners?
185. Well, I always feel that
186. even though one is an artist
187. that we are first human beings
188. and we live in the same world as any other person
189. so that we as artists should never close our eyes
190. to what is happening around us.
191. Therefore, coming from South Africa,
192. naturally my life was affected by my environment there
193. and the songs that I sing are just about my everyday life
194. and the things I say are those things that have affected my life.
195. The message I'm trying to give to my audience is not one.
196. I am just trying to make them understand me as a person
197. and understand my country and my people.
198. Do you see some principal difference between the struggle of the Africans in countries
199. like South Africa, Mozambique, Angola, on the one hand, and on the other hand in countries
200. like Brazil and United States where they are in minority?
201. There is really no difference in the struggle between the people you have mentioned because
202. we are all Africans. We were just put in different countries by white people who took the people
203. from Africa and spread them out. And it is true that our problems are the same. Now,
204. saying that they are a minority, this really means nothing because the white man, wherever
205. he is, whether he is in the majority or the minority, he rules. It just shows you, if
206. It just proves to everyone that we just have to keep fighting.
207. We just have to fight that much more,
208. because it doesn't matter whether he's majority or minority.
209. He's always on top.
210. Which status are you aiming to between the whites and the Africans at the end, when you have won?
211. That will depend on them.
212. We are not worried about them.
213. We are just worried about ourselves.
214. It is our country.
215. They came from Europe to invade our country.
216. They took it.
217. They have made us suffer.
218. so we don't have to worry about thinking what will we do to them
219. or what will happen to them.
220. It will be up to them to see fit what they can do when we have won,
221. just like they see fit what to do right now while they are on top.
222. So it's something that we don't worry about.
223. All we are worried about is to fight and liberate ourselves.
224. what will happen after that will depend again on the invaders.

273. And that's one of the, if not the first, maybe one of the first recordings of Miriam Makeba of this particular version in this beautiful, very acoustic sounding like a little jazz group supporting her in this particular song.

293. She came to the U.S., she performed for President Kennedy,
294. but then she was forced into exile and lost her residency in 1968
295. because she married the activist Stokely Carmichael
296. because, of course, after that, during that period
297. when the FBI was scrutinizing after everybody who was doing anything
298. that was considered sort of uncalled for, unbecoming.
299. And so this is what was going on back in the 60s.
300. She still remained a very strong voice against apartheid
301. because let's say this, folks, up front,
302. if anybody spoke against apartheid, it was Miriam Makeba.
303. Way back in the early days when finally everybody is starting to, through the news media, through reports on television and radio, people started finding out the horrendous situation that they were living in South Africa.
304. She was one of the first spokespeople against apartheid.
