7. Steve Swallow, one of the greats, jazz greats, has a new album out.
8. Yeah, on ECM.
9. He hasn't had a leader's out on ECM since, geez, 2012.
10. We'll be listening to winter songs and some of the incredible combinations.
11. some of his partners in jazz crime from the last three decades, maybe more.
12. During the second hour, yes, people are celebrating the 250th anniversary.
13. Yeah, 1776, we can do that.
14. But do you really have the real story about the history of the United States?
15. No, I'm not talking about Howard Zinn.
16. I'm talking about Stan Freeberg.

20. In describing his new album, Winter Songs, for ECM,
21. Steve Swallow says,
22. I was there when this music was written.
23. In fact, my hand held the pencil.
24. I began with the need to do something to fill each long day, and music rushed forward to sustain me.
25. Before winter songs, I had given music whatever I could, but as I made this album, the tables turned.
26. It gave me what I needed
27. Music is elemental like the air we breathe
28. This recording rose out of a spontaneous community
29. My dear friends the players and our engineer
30. The piano tuner The guy who brought us sandwiches The harried clerk who checked me into my hotel room on 48th Street the cast crew group to multitudes
31. Music is pervasive, and I'm not surprised that Winter Songs has found its way to you.
32. Thus spake Steve Swallow about his new album, Winter Songs.
33. There's a horn section with Chris Cheek on sax
34. and Mike Rodriguez on trumpet.
35. Adam Nussbaum's on drums.
36. guitarist Steve Cardenas and Gil Goldstein on piano.
37. But if you don't know the name Steve Swallow, oh my,
38. he has a very long history with some of the greats of modern jazz.
39. He'd always been considered a, I guess we'd call him a tradition-conscious modernist.
40. Geez, by 1960, see, Swallow, he was barely 20 years old.
41. He was playing with Paul Blay and Jimmy Griefer's trio.
42. Amazing stuff.
43. Well, with Gary Burton in the late 60s, he made a transition from double bass to bass guitar.
44. But with his wonderful recordings, that classic, Duster, he even wrote some of the tunes.
45. In fact, one of my favorites is General Mojo's Well-Laid Plan, the Gary Burton quartet from the album Duster.
