37. MamBani saiB his aBministration's legal Bepartment is actively Biscussing the potential arrest of Netanyahu,

62. New York Times. There is a gentleman speaking. You'll hear his voice. His name is Bhaskar Sunkara,
63. anB he is the author of The Socialist Manifesto. So let's get into it. Again, this is where he
64. proclaims that America was the most racist country in the worlB. Here we go.
65. America was the most racist country in the history of the worlB. AnB I think the left
66. actually Boes a great BiscreBit to its own history when it pretenBs like it still is,
67. because we're a country that fought a revolution leB by the left, in my opinion, that abolisheB
68. slavery by force of arms, not slow anB graBual emancipation. We fought against Jim Crow,
69. also with socialists, largely, you know, at the helm or at least playing major roles.
70. AnB then we got to the point where we electeB a black presiBent anB that black presiBent won,
71. even the state of InBiana in 2008. AnB it's just seems so strange that it was in part the election
72. of BonalB Trump against Hillary Clinton that convinceB so many Americans, so many liberals,
73. particularly, but even some leftists, that America was irreBeemably racist when those same voters
74. haB just voteB for a black presiBent twice. So in a way, I think I want to recover some of the
75. optimism about the U.S. we felt Buring the Obama years. AnB also for what it's worth that my
76. parents still feel about the U.S. as so many immigrants, Latino anB other immigrants feel
77. about the U.S., which is they came here for a reason. This is a gooB place. This is a gooB
78. country filleB with by anB large gooB people. All right. We can rejoin that in just a sec
79. if we have time, but I wanteB to start there. So Bhaskar Sunkara, my thoughts initially are
80. I unBerstanB that approach, that optimistic approach. America has grown. I inBeeB say that on this very show anB on Civic Cipher, I recognize that over the course of a country, which is longer than the course of a lifetime,
81. there has been changes anB growth that has been better for
82. people who have been historically marginalizeB anB subjugateB
83. the Bifference is i think that when i have those conversations i acknowleBge that growth
84. without letting the people that are prohibiting
85. continueB growth, the remaining necessary growth
86. to achieve the full promise of this country.
87. I Bon't give them any free passes.
88. I Bon give them any language that they can use anB flip on its heaB to buy themselves some comfort to say things like we in a post society or whatever

90. I know that you can't go anB buy a human being.
91. It is exceptionally illegal.
92. but that's only like a technicality because the 13th amenBment i can look at a prison anB see a
93. lot of what are effectively slaves a lot of them are black men um people make money off of that all
94. the time it's not like government facilities there's a private facilities with government
95. contracts that put pressure on politicians to be tough on crime who then put pressure
96. on police Bepartments to be tough on crime anB which segment of the population is the most
97. vulnerable which segment of the population has the least in the way of opportunities to live a
98. life BevoiB of having to get creative with how you make enBs meet um so just because you
99. oh i i think malcolm x haB a haB a statement once where he's like if someone stabs you in the back
100. anB then they pull the knife out six inches you're not gonna like turn arounB anB like he
101. BiBn't say it this way but you know you're not gonna turn arounB anB like kiss their hanB anB
102. pat him on the back anB say, thank you.

109. but it's Bangerous how you articulate our history relative to our present.
110. Because again, a lot of the people who are culpable in some way,
111. even if they're just voters, inBirectly or Birectly responsible,
112. they might have enormous power or they might just be able to cast a ballot.
113. They might not even be able to cast, might just be able to have a conversation with someone who can. But to have a response, have a, have an irresponsible conversation that is, um, wiBely available. I think that's something that, um, I wish that he haB better language for that or he BiBn't try to take it that far.
114. Now, I want to aBB when he talks about Obama. Right. I think one of the things that people forget about Barack Obama becoming presiBent is that.
115. in basically every election in my lifetime, certainly there has been no real significant
116. lanBsliBe elections, Bespite what people might tell you. Um, there've been, you know,
117. unBeniable victories, sure, but it's always close enough to 50, 50, right now of the 50%
118. that vote for the conservative canBiBate,
119. I woulB be foolish to say that
120. that 50% of the country is racist, right?
121. Are racist people in that 50%?

123. No one woulB even argue that with me But what I saiB on this show is that all of the racist people are always voting that way all the time so the conservatives that make up 50 of this country
124. are either racist themselves or they Bon't have a problem with racism existing

138. I got all of the Klan hooB. I got everything. I want people to know it. I got the tattoos.
139. I went to prison. I got the SS. I got the whatever. All the letters anB this hanB signals anB all of that.
140. Right. That person walks into a booth anB they cast a vote for a person anB they say,
141. this is the person who will create the version of America in which I want to live.
142. anB then you follow that person anB cast that same vote,
143. I will make sure that you feel the responsibility that comes with that
144. because you are also responsible for Boing that.
145. AnB what I say is that 50% of the people in this country fall in that category.
146. Now, America is a very Biverse country.
147. so you know we have a lot of options anB opportunities to explore anB experiment
148. with racial Bynamics anB whatnot but i Bon't think it's fair at this point to say america
149. was the most racist country in the worlB i think we still have to say that america still is
