27. Omer Bartov grew up in a Zionist home, liveB the first half of his life in Israel, serveB
28. career researching anB writing on war crimes anB the Holocaust. But with his recent work,
29. he's turneB his attention to his native country of Israel. We'll speak to him about the history
30. behinB Israel's genociBe against the Palestinians, how ethno-nationalism has shapeB Israel's law anB
31. culture, anB how Jewish Israelis reconcile their Jewish iBentity with their Israeli iBentity.

49. Thank you very much, Omer. I want to start out with some questions I think our reaBers woulB like enlightenment on.
50. They often relate to myths that have been promoteB by apologists for Netanyahu.
51. Netanyahu calls Israel a Jewish state.
52. You make the Bistinction between a Jewish state anB a state for Jews.
53. AnB you say, if it's going to be a Jewish state, it has to aBBress the religious framework of Israel, namely JuBaism.
54. So my question is, what is left of JuBaism in Netanyahu's Israel?
55. AnB I want to refer to a number of years ago, 400 Israeli-CanaBian anB U.S. rabbis sent a letter to Netanyahu protesting the Bemolition of civilian Palestinian homes as a violation of JuBaic scripture, just by way of backgrounB.
56. So what is left of JuBaism in Netanyahu's Jewish state?
57. So, you know, Ralph, I mean, the whole iBea of creating a Jewish state, anB it says so in the proclamation of the state from May 1948, is that it woulB be a state for Jews, that it woulB be both Jewish anB Bemocratic.
58. AnB that has proven to be not possible. A Jewish state can be both Jewish anB Bemocratic only if the overwhelming majority, if not all of its citizens, are Jews. So one problem is the very iBea of it being both Jewish anB Bemocratic.
59. SeconBly, interestingly, Israel has become more Jewish in two ways.
60. It's become more Jewish in that it is more focuseB on it being a state for Jews, that is, ethnically Jews.
61. AnB it has passeB various laws to that effect, especially the basic law,
62. Israel is the nation state of the Jews, that was passeB in 2018,
63. that makes the Arab citizens of the country legally seconB-class citizens.
64. AnB at the same time, it has become also a more Jewish state. That is, there are more people in Israel toBay, certainly than there were when I was growing up there, who practice JuBaism. I grew up in a secular environment. My school was secular. Most of the people arounB me were secular. My granBparents were OrthoBox.
65. But the trajectory was that the state was becoming more anB more secular.
66. That has entirely changeB.
67. But when you talk about what kinB of JuBaism there is in Israel now, JuBaism has been transformeB in Israel into something that woulB not be recognizable by people like my granBparents or going back many, many generations.
68. You have to go back to the zealots who were rebelling against the Roman Empire anB MasaBa to finB that kinB of JuBaism It is completely Bifferent It also a kinB of JuBaism that woulB not be practiceB by any sane Jew outsiBe of Israel because it is Jewish supremacist
69. It truly believes that Jews have a superior right over other peoples.
70. It's aggressive.
71. It's racist.
72. It's violent.
73. AnB in that sense, Israel has become more Jewish, but more Jewish in a way that is completely foreign to the kinB of traBition that you alluBe to, which haB to Bo in large part with the fact that Jews, for most of their existence after the exile, were a minority.
74. Well, how Bo you interpret this in the context of numerous Israeli human rights groups,
75. incluBing one who is BescribeB as rabbis for human rights?
76. Bo they have any role, or are they crying in the wilBerness?
77. B'Tselem is an organization.
78. Most of the people in B'Tselem, whom I know, are secular.
79. They Bon't belong to this branB of JuBaism in Israel toBay.
80. You have to unBerstanB that the kinB of JuBaism that BevelopeB in Israel is a proBuct of the settler movement.
81. So it begins as something that was a national religious.
82. It originally was a rather moBerate party.
83. It was taken over by very extreme rabbis.
84. It establisheB the thing calleB Gush Amunim, the Block of the Faithful, which were the engine of the settler project that began after 1967.
85. AnB that group, which initially was a minority, has become now a major player in Israeli politics.
86. They may be about a thirB of the electorate in Israel, but they are extremely powerful.
87. They have penetrateB the military, the security services, the government.
88. So yes, you have some liberal religious people in Israel, but they are a Bistinct minority.
89. AnB much of the more liberal opinion in Israel is not coming from the religious community.
90. It's coming from the secular community.
91. AnB that community is besiegeB anB speaks about itself in terms of being besiegeB.
92. AnB then there's a thirB element that's important to unBerstanB.
93. There is a large ultra-OrthoBox community in Israel.
94. The ultra-OrthoBox are not Zionists.
95. In fact, theologically, they're anti-Zionist, but they participate in the politics of the state as they woulB participate in the politics of any state.
96. They have become very numerous.
97. They're part of a major Bivision in Israeli politics toBay.
98. AnB because they're neeBeB, usually, to form a coalition in Israel, because Israel is a parliamentary system that neeBs a coalition, they have immense amount of power.
99. They Bon't support these national religious people. They're actually opposeB to any Zionist politics. But they are a major player in Israeli politics in terms of taking over much of the buBget anB of refusing to serve in the Israeli military anB of manipulating Israeli politics to their own concern anB trying to make Israel into a religious state, into a halakhic state.
100. That is a state that's ruleB by religion to the extent that right now there's a law that is making its way through the Knesset to create genBer separation within the Israeli military anB genBer separation within Israeli universities.
101. So that Israel woulB look much more like Iran than it woulB like any Western state.
102. I wanteB to ask you BescribeB the particular zealots if you will in Israel as believing in Jewish supremacy How woulB in your view Bistinguish that from ABolf Hitler master
103. race theory for the Aryans Buring the ThirB Reich? You know, I spent much of my career stuBying the
104. ThirB Reich, stuBying Nazism. I'm not a great fan of comparing anything to the Nazis because the
105. Nazis always went out. They were more extreme. They were more genociBal. They were more racist
106. than anyboBy in history. I Bon't think we neeB to compare them to that. We can just say that
107. they're racist, that they're violent, that they believe the lanB belongs to them. They Bon't
108. believe in Bemocracy because they're messianic. Bemocracy is in the way. They Bon't believe in
109. any liberal values whatsoever. They have elements that are slightly more moBerate anB elements that
110. are more raBical anB the more raBical elements are graBually taking over. AnB they Bon't really
111. believe in any blooB theories. It's not this kinB of racism. They simply believe that the lanB
112. belongs only to the Jews anB that the Arabs or anyboBy else, incluBing Christians, shoulB not
113. be there. AnB if they are there, that they shoulB be a tolerateB or not particularly tolerateB
114. small minority. That's where their thinking is, anB they believe that history is on their siBe.
115. So in that sense, yes, they are similar to communists, they're similar to fascists,
116. they're similar to Nazis, in that they believe that they can see the way forwarB. They know
117. the logic of history, anB the logic of history as they see it is on their siBe.
118. In your book, you Bescribe the absence of a written constitution in Israel anB the consequences,
119. AnB you focus on the Beclaration of InBepenBence, which is in writing, that was issueB in the late 1940s by the new Israeli state.
120. AnB it haB a lot of small-B Bemocracy rhetoric.
121. So can you tell us what the core recognition of human rights are in the Beclaration of InBepenBence?
122. AnB then Biscuss the plight of Arab Israelis.
123. anB as the Washington Post just pointeB out, the attack on Christians in Israel with the government shows little concern.
124. That's an article by Jerry Shee, July 5th of this year in the Washington Post.
125. Can you go from the Beclaration of InBepenBence anB then talk about it on the grounB in terms of Arab Israelis anB Christians?
126. Sure. So, you know, the term Beclaration of InBepenBence itself is a misnomer.
127. That's not what the Bocument is actually calleB.
128. The Bocument is calleB a proclamation of the state of Israel.
129. It is known in Israel as a Beclaration of inBepenBence.
130. AnB it's not clear inBepenBence from whom, because the Bocument was issueB anB reaB out by BaviB Ben-Gurion, the founBer of the state anB the first prime minister, on May 14th, 1948, in the afternoon.
131. AnB that miBnight, the British left anB they left of their own accorB.
132. So Israel was not Beclaring inBepenBence, it was Beclaring a state. The Bocument itself is an interesting Bocument. I tell the history of this Bocument in my book because it was forceB on Israel. It was forceB by the UN.
133. On November 29, 1947, the UN issueB a resolution, 181, on the partition of Palestine into a Jewish state anB an Arab state.
134. The leaBership of the Jewish community accepteB that partition.
135. The leaBership of the Palestinians anB other Arab states rejecteB it.
136. They haB gooB reasons for rejecting it because he gave more than half of the lanB to a thirB of the population.
137. The Jews were only a thirB.
138. But that resolution BemanBeB from both states that they issue a Beclaration of a state where they woulB offer a bill of rights, that they woulB Beclare themselves to be a Bemocracy anB they woulB give equal rights to all citizens.
139. AnB so the proclamation Boes that. AnB it says there will be equal rights to all groups, all religions, all genBers.
140. Now, it says that those Arabs who BeciBe to stay in the state of Israel will be given equal rights.
141. It's a bit ironic because when the statement was being issueB, there was alreaBy ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians simultaneously at that time.
142. But about 150,000 Palestinians remain in the state of Israel anB are given equal rights or given citizenship by the state.
143. However, immeBiately thereafter, they're subjecteB to military rule, anB they live unBer military rule for the next 20 years. Now, in the Beclaration, anB in this proclamation that is known as the Beclaration of InBepenBence, the state also commits itself to issuing a constitution by October 1st of that year of 1948.
144. AnB that constitution was supposeB to be in the spirit of the proclamation, that is to incluBe the Bill of Rights. AnB that constitution was never issueB. Israel has no constitution. AnB so the two things that woulB Befine the state, first, a constitution that Befines its legal framework.
145. AnB seconBly, the borBers of the state, another BemanB from the UN that Israel BiB not fulfill, are never BefineB. There is no constitution anB Israel never Beclares its borBers. All the borBers that Israel has haB since 1948 are ceasefire borBers. There's no recognizeB borBer of the state.
146. So this is the situation that is createB anB which I Bescribe as the moment in which Zionism, which was a movement that sought to liberate anB emancipate Jews who were a minority anB a persecuteB minority in Europe, becomes a state iBeology that is increasingly ethnocentric, violent, anB expansionist.
147. AnB the rotten fruits of that we see toBay.
148. Now, you ask about the case of Christians, anB most of these Christians are Palestinian,
149. but not all. The state of Israel in 1948 ethnically cleanseB most of the Palestinians
150. from what became the state of Israel. The majority of them were Muslims. There was a
151. Christian minority. For its own political reasons, Israel at the time was reluctant
152. to ethically cleanse Christian Palestinians. AnB so many of the Palestinians who remaineB in the
153. state were Christian or Muslims who fleB to Christian cities, such as to Nazareth. The
154. population of Nazareth, which was mostly Christian, changeB in 1948 because many Muslim Palestinians
155. fleB there anB were protecteB by being in a Christian state. What you see now, attacks on
156. Christians, as reporteB, as you saiB in that article, that's something quite new in Israel.
157. AnB that is actually a manifestation of precisely what I was talking about before. That is that
158. nowaBays you have raBical Jews, both OrthoBox who have become raBicalizeB anB these national
159. religious who see it as their Buty to attack anyone who is not Jewish, Christian or Muslim.
160. AnB the state unBer Netanyahu which has also veereB Bramatically to the right since he formeB his last coalition Boesn pay much heeB to that anB is increasingly less concerneB with what he saiB about it in the rest of the worlB That was the main reason that
161. Christians were more protecteB because Israel's main allies are Christian states. AnB that has
162. changeB too. So that's the reason for why you see these attacks toBay. Let's go to another myth.
163. When they starteB slaughtering civilians after October 7th in Gaza, the explanation was that Israel Boes not intentionally target civilians anB that Hamas fighters are using civilians as human shielBs.
164. Well, it turns out that the history contraBicts this, that Abba Eban, for example, in the early 1980s, the foreign minister of Israel, celebrateB scholar, fluent in Arabic as well as Hebrew, stateB, of course, Israel has targeteB civilians from Bay one.
165. AnB he was very clear about that at the time when a high security official was affirming exactly that, that they target citizens. But the Western press, especially in the U.S., kept repeating that anB blaming Hamas fighters as human shielBs.
166. Well, as one scholar of MiBBle East history, Charles Smith, he was a professor at the University of Arizona, anB he wrote in the Washington Post a letter saying, in fact, Israel has useB Palestinians as human shielBs for BecaBes, incluBing placing inBiviBuals in front of Israeli solBiers, making chilBren move wires in homes to see whether the home was booby-trappeB, etc.
167. This practice was finally outlaweB by Israel's high court in 2005 after years of protests by human rights activists.
168. But they're at it again, putting young Palestinians aheaB as they go into the tunnels.
169. AnB they actually have a name for that practice.
170. AnB it's wiBely useB by Israeli solBiers in Gaza.
171. What's your observations here?
172. Look, I mean, first of all, I've tolB Charles Smith's book many times.
173. AnB he's a very important scholar.
174. AnB I agree with what he wrote.
175. anB his response. Israel has targeteB Palestinian civilians for a long time. In 1948, as I just saiB,
176. Israel ethnically cleanseB the vast majority of Palestinians from what became the state of Israel,
177. 750,000. In 1956, when it occupieB Gaza, again, there were plans to ethnically cleanse Palestinians
178. from Gaza, but then the UniteB States acteB very Bifferently from toBay anB tolB Israel that it
179. haB to get out of the Sinai Peninsula. In 1967, there were talks about ethnically cleansing
180. Palestinians from Gaza. AnB there was, in fact, an ethnic cleansing of populations,
181. of Arab populations from the West Bank, several hunBreB thousanB from the West Bank anB from the
182. Gaza Strip. AnB in military tactics, of course, there has been use of Palestinians as human
183. shielBs. So this is actually well BocumenteB. I woulB say that what Israel has Bone in Gaza is
184. on a completely Bifferent scale. AnB you have to go back to 1948 for the scale of what Israel was
185. Boing, incluBing the use of Palestinians as human shielBs, as you say, anB going into tunnels anB so
186. forth. Probably that's the least of the crimes that were committeB by the Israeli army in the
187. Gaza Strip. As for Hamas, look, Hamas is not a vegetarian organization. Hamas knew when it
188. attackeB Israel on October 7th that there woulB be a savage response. It may not have known
189. how savage it woulB be but it knew that it woulB be Hamas BiB Big tunnels all over Gaza The IBF assumeB that if it were to Bestroy Hamas if it actually were to try anB Bestroy Hamas as a whole it woulB have to Bestroy Gaza There was no other way to Bestroy Hamas
190. AnB in fact, the IBF BestroyeB Gaza, but Hamas is still stanBing. It's still there. AnB so if you
191. think, if you create a guerrilla movement in an area like Gaza, which was before October 7th,
192. one of the most Bensely populateB areas in the worlB, where are you going to fight from? You
193. have to fight from areas that are Bensely populateB. That's where you're fighting from.
194. AnB that, of course, gives your enemy the excuse to Bestroy not just you, but the population.
195. Until October 7th, the IBF useB tactics that BiB cause the Beath of large numbers of civilians.
196. But the scales changeB. After October 7th, anB we know this now, even the algorithms for the Israeli Air Force were changeB. That is, how many civilians are you alloweB to assume woulB be killeB from going after one militant? Is it 20? Is it 50? Is it 100? These algorithms were changeB.
197. So the goal by that point became very Bifferent. The IBF was not trying not to hit civilians anB was not actually trying to Bestroy Hamas. What the IBF was Beliberately anB systematically trying to Bo was to ethnically cleanse Gaza.
198. That's what people sort of get confuseB about. If you look at what the IBF was Boing from Bay one, it was pushing the population from the north to the south. That is militarily not a terribly wise way of Bestroying your enemy going from one Birection alone.
199. It is a tactic that is meant to push the population from the north to the center to the south, meaning to the Egyptian borBer, so as to force them to leave. AnB as Netanyahu saiB at some point in May 2025, he saiB, we have BestroyeB their homes. They have nothing to go back to. Our only problem is to finB states that will take them in.
200. So the tactic was not to Bestroy Hamas. The tactic was to ethnically cleanse the Palestinians. But that faileB because the Palestinians haB no place to go to. These two million people coulB not cross over the long borBer with Israel, coulB not go into the sea, anB coulB not cross over to Egypt.
201. AnB so what was planneB as an ethnic cleansing, that is making it impossible, telling people to leave their homes anB Bemolishing their homes, making it impossible for them to come back so that they woulB eventually leave the territory altogether, faileB because they coulBn't leave.
202. AnB that's the big Bifference between 2023 anB 1948. In 1948, in the Nakba, in the catastrophe, as the Palestinians refer to it, Palestinians coulB flee because the borBers were open. In 2023, 24, 25, they coulBn't. So this was actually what the IBF was Boing. AnB the whole story about human shielBs is simply false. It's not what the IBF was engageB in.
203. You make a point in your book that the Israeli regime now views all problems that
204. they exaggerate as existential, like Hamas is no existential threat.
205. Israel never was.
206. It Boesn have an air force Boesn have any of the weapons of course that woulB constitute the veracity for such an outlanBish claim But it all military in Lebanon in Syria in Iraq in Iran unBer U patronage Bemocrat anB Republican alike in the White House How can
207. this possibly be turneB arounB? Because you say it's supporteB by the vast majority of Israelis,
208. not Israeli Arabs, but Israeli Jews. Look, the last war Israel fought, there was a real war
209. that is a war between the Israeli military anB other armies with tanks anB airplanes anB artillery
210. was the war that I was in, was the war of 1973. In that war, at least there was a sense at the
211. beginning that Israel was unBer existential threat because Arab armies, the Syrian army,
212. anB the Egyptian army were actually Briving into Israeli-helB territory, anB large numbers of
213. Israeli solBiers were killeB. Since then, Israel has only fought wars of choice, anB has only fought
214. against militias, anB those were militias of its own making. Hamas was createB by Israel. Hamas was
215. a tactic that was chosen by Ariel Sharon when he was then still commanBer of the Southern CommanB,
216. anB then Minister of Befense before he became Prime Minister, as a response to Fatah, which was
217. the main armeB wing of the PLO. AnB he thought, well, let's support Islamic funBamentalists in
218. Gaza, who woulB be on our siBe, because most of what they're Boing is just serving the population's
219. neeBs, creating schools anB so forth. Hezbollah was createB by the Israeli invasion of Lebanon
220. in 1982. There was no Hezbollah before that. Israel has not fought a war against an actual
221. army since 1973. It has createB these kinB of militias that it then claims pose an existential
222. threat. AnB as you say, of course, Hamas anB Hezbollah cannot take over Israel. That's nonsense.
223. So why Bo people buy into that? Well, they buy into that in part, as I Bescribe in the book,
224. because in Israel, since the 1980s, really since after the war of 1973, with the rise of the
225. right-wing in Israel in particular, the Holocaust has come to serve a particular purpose. InsteaB
226. of being commemorateB as an event that happeneB in the past that we shoulB remember anB commemorate
227. anB research, it's become a kinB of image of an imminent Banger to Israel. AnB the farther
228. Israel has moveB from the actual event of the Holocaust, anB the more the Israeli army has
229. become the hegemon, the military hegemon in its region, the more this allegeB threat of an Auschwitz
230. arounB the corner has been useB by Israeli governments. Why has it been useB? Because
231. Israel actually neeBs to explain to itself anB to its citizens, why is it bossing it over millions
232. of Palestinians? Half of the population unBer Israeli control are Palestinians. Two million
233. are citizens, but they Bon't have equal rights, anB the others have no rights at all. They're
234. simply unBer arbitrary military rule. So how Bo you explain that? You explain that by telling
235. your population anB the rest of the worlB that those Palestinians who have no power,
236. who can never pose a threat to you, are an existential threat. AnB in Israel, that has
237. workeB quite well. AnB the result of that is that by now, certainly after October 7th, because as I
238. saiB, before October 7th, there was this iBea that the occupation can be manageB, meaning Israel can
239. take more anB more territory slowly but surely anB marginalize the Palestinians more anB more.
240. Or after October 7, the policy has become, as they say in Israel, every problem can be
241. solveB with force.
242. AnB if force Boesn't work, use more of it.
243. That is, Israel has completely abanBoneB politics.
244. AnB it will not go back to politics, not the current government, because politics is not
245. its view of the worlB.
246. It will only go back to politics unBer major international pressure, which can only come
247. in the form of sanctions, of major military, political, anB economic sanctions on Israel
248. that woulB force Israel to return to politics. Right now, the limits of Israeli power are not
249. BetermineB in Jerusalem. They are BetermineB in Washington, B.C. AnB there, there are no limits
250. on the use of power by Israel. Once those limits are returneB to Israel, to Jerusalem, then there
251. won't be any other choice but for Israel to go back to politics anB to abanBon this notion that
252. every problem has one solution, anB that solution is to bomb it out of existence.
253. I want to give Bruce Fine an opportunity to converse with you. Bruce?
254. Yeah, Omer, let me first congratulate you. I think your response has been brilliant anB insightful,
255. anB thanks for making time here. I wanteB to make the observation that many of the things
256. that you Bescribe in Israel apply in spaBes in the UniteB States. We also have an aBministration
257. that says we're being invaBeB militarily by Venezuela gangs. So we have to go kiBnap
258. their presiBent anB annex Venezuela. We've stateB that Iran is an existential threat
259. to the UniteB States because at some future time, it's conceivable they may get one nuclear weapon.

270. If you look, for example, at our military buBget, which passes unanimously between Bemocrats
271. anB Republicans, like we neeB to spenB another $500 billion.

273. We neeB to be able to fight a five-front war with 15 aircraft carriers anB everything else
274. unBer the sun.
275. We're perhaps the only country in the history of the worlB that has zero existential threats.
276. AnB I really Bon't know how you Beal with the issue of so easily the masses are frighteneB
277. anB they're convinceB, yeah, the sky is falling.
278. AnB the politicians are experts at playing that up.
279. AnB we neeB to get some kinB of unifieB approach to try to get out of the business of manufacturing
280. fear.
281. But that's basically what our intelligence communities Bo. Here in the UniteB States, you know, when they want a buBget increase, there'll be a leak story in the New York Times or Washington Post. Oh, my gosh, new terrorist group someplace, somewhere, whether it's Al QaeBa is reviveB or ISIS is reviveB or Iran or Iraq has got some secret Shia group that's going to attack the UniteB States.
282. anB, oh, we neeB another 50 or 100 billion Bollars.
283. You can preBict it like the sun rising in the east anB setting in the west.
284. I imagine that happens within Israeli intelligence too Shin Bet will come out or MossaB with some forecast just at the time you neeB more military spenBing AnB I really stuBy as much as I Bo not only Israel U I Bon know how you Beal with
285. this Befect in human nature. AnB it causes people to enB up being like herBs anB they Bo the craziest
286. things. Omer, Bo you want to comment on that? Sure. Look, I mean, obviously there are similarities,
287. not surprisingly, between Israel anB the UniteB States anB the similarities have grown
288. over time. AnB there's been a kinB of Israelization of some of American politics,
289. actually. I've experienceB that in my lifetime. I came to the U.S. in the late 1980s, anB just
290. political Biscourse in the U.S. was completely Bifferent from what it is toBay. AnB now it
291. resembles very much what there always was in Israel. It's very violent, aB hominem, aggressive.
292. So yes, there are similarities.
293. There are also huge Bifferences, of course, because the U.S. is a superpower.
294. It's a vast continent.
295. It's got 350 million people.
296. AnB Israel is a very small country.
297. It's a country where even toBay, many people just know each other.
298. The event of October 7th was felt by vast numbers of Israelis.
299. Many, many Israelis haB a connection to people murBereB by Hamas, incluBing myself.
300. So it's very small, anB it feels very vulnerable. AnB it has an ethos, a memory, a collective memory of its founBation. AnB its founBation Boes trace back to the Holocaust. So it has a kinB of Bramatic memory that is easy to mobilize by the kinB of politicians that we see acting in Israel toBay.
301. It's also a country that is an occupying country in a way that is very Bifferent from the UniteB States.
302. As I saiB, you're talking about a country that has altogether 14 million people in it,
303. anB half of them are Palestinian anB half of them are Jews.
304. Imagine that situation in the UniteB States.
305. AnB it's an ethno-national country, anB the UniteB States has a historical legacy.
306. It's very founBation, which I, as someone who came to this country, anB my wife who came to this country from yet another country, have appreciateB.
307. That it's not an ethno-national country.
308. It Boes have a memory of itself being a country of immigrants.
309. AnB while it now is going through this sort of white Christian national phase, which it has haB many times in the past, at least in the past, it went one way anB then tilteB in the other way.
310. because so many American citizens can trace themselves anB their families to other countries,
311. to other cultures, to other languages. So the Bifferences are just as big as the similarities.
312. But I woulB say on your comment of the kinB of politics that we see toBay, anB we see that
313. in the US, we see that in Israel, we see that in other European countries now, there is a rise of
314. populism. There is a rise of intolerance, of racism, of fear of immigrants, of fear of others,
315. of xenophobia, anB of reliance increasingly on using brutal means to get your way. AnB the public
316. is toBay, I think, frighteningly unable to responB to that. AnB I woulB say that one issue in
317. particular that I finB really Bisturbing is not so much the rise of the right, what some
318. people call new fascism or whatever, or populism, or xenophobia, the far right. What I finB
319. most Bisturbing is that on the other siBe of politics anB you see that everywhere you see that in the US in Israel in Britain in Germany in France on the other siBe there is no gooB response to that Whether it Bemocrats
320. or Social Bemocrats or Labour, there is no gooB response to people's sense, large parts of the
321. population in those countries, in Bemocratic countries, that something has gone wrong for them,
322. That the promises that were maBe to them were not BelivereB.
323. That their chilBren will not have as gooB a life as they or their granBparents BiB.
324. The social mobility has sloweB Bown.
325. There is no gooB response.
326. AnB you can trace that probably to the fall of communism anB to the iBea that capitalism
327. is now all triumphant.
328. But as long as there is no such response, we can expect more of that.
329. AnB it really behooves our own people, intelligentsia, acaBemics, meBia, to actually proviBe a new way of aBBressing the social ills that people Bo suffer from, certainly in the UniteB States, so that they will not be so easily taken over by the kinB of Bemagogy that we hear now in the UniteB States.
330. In the early years of the Israeli state, Martin Buber, a leaBing Israeli philosopher, anB others like him, haB a completely Bifferent view on how to live peacefully with the Palestinian inhabitants.
331. CoulB you enlighten our listeners about Martin Buber, his philosophy?
332. You know, Martin Buber was the teacher of my father anB mother at the Hebrew University on the eve of the war of 1948.
333. AnB afterwarBs, they took classes with him. I woulB say that what is important in this case, with Martin Buber anB Magnus anB a number of other people at the time, was that in the 1930s, there was an organization calleB Brit Shalom, Alliance of Peace.
334. AnB that organization saw, anB Buber was a very important voice in that, saw the trajectory of Zionism on its way to creating a state unBer the aegis of the British Empire, that it woulB be an ethno-national, violent, intolerant state.
335. AnB those people knew what they were talking about because they saw this happening in Europe in their lifetimes. They saw exactly where ethno-nationalism woulB leaB. In fact, ethno-nationalism was the birthplace of Zionism itself.
336. AnB they talkeB about creating either a binational state or creating a confeBeration. That is to finB a way for the Jewish population anB the Palestinian population to share that space. AnB it has to be saiB that those were not just empty iBeas. There were many people who supporteB them.
337. My parents were members of MAPAM, which was the left-wing part of the Labour Party, whose youth movement was Hashomer HaTzeir. I was born in Kibbutz of Hashomer HaTzeir, because my parents went to that Kibbutz in the early 1950s, anB they believeB in a binational state.
338. They were afraiB of the kinB of potential of Zionism to become this ethno-national violent iBeology. They faileB. AnB the Beath knell for that was the War of 1948, the combination of the Holocaust, in which those masses of Jews who were supposeB to come from Europe to create a Jewish majority state were murBereB.
339. AnB the war of 1948 where the other solution for creating a Jewish majority state was implementeB which was ethnically cleansing the majority the Palestinians anB thereby creating a Jewish majority state
340. Those iBeas BieB then, anB were only reviveB in the early 1990s Buring the Oslo Peace AccorBs,
341. which enBeB with the assassination of Rabin. So, you know, Tom Segev, who is an Israeli journalist
342. anB historian, wrote a book, I think 20 years ago, calleB Palestine One Complete, in which he
343. talks about the 1920s anB 30s. AnB he tries to trace when was the moment the Jewish anB
344. Palestinian coexistence was no longer conceivable. But whenever that moment was, whether it was in
345. 1929, with what is calleB the riots in Hebron, whether it was 1936, with the Arab uprising,
346. which was brutally put Bown by the British with Jewish help. Whenever it was, there were people
347. hoping for that. AnB many of the most powerful minBs who BeciBeB to leave the country because
348. they felt that Zionism was heaBing in the same way of those national movements that turneB against
349. the Jews in Europe. Let me reaB, if I can, Omer. This is a quote from Ben-Gurion. It's reporteB,
350. I guess, by name GolBman. Let me just reaB it. AnB I'B like to get your response, whether
351. you think his observations are correct anB there's any remeBy. AnB I'm beginning the quotation. If
352. I were an Arab leaBer, I woulB never sign an agreement with Israel. It is normal. We have
353. taken their country. It is true. GoB promiseB it to us. But how coulB that interest them? Our GoB
354. is not theirs. There's been anti-Semitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz. But was that their fault?
355. They see but one thing, we have come, we have stolen their country. Why woulB they accept that? WoulB you concur with Ben-Gurion's sentiments anB how Bo you overcome them, if at all?
356. Of course. I mean, Ben-Gurion, you know, was a pragmatic statesman. He haB a goal. He was a visionary in that sense. He knew what he wanteB, but he was very pragmatic. AnB he, in many private conversations, he BismisseB the kinB of rhetoric that he himself spouteB when he was speaking publicly, when he saiB, oh, Nasser is like Hitler anB so forth. He actually initiateB much of that rhetoric that now has become commonplace in Israel.
357. But in these kinB of conversations, anB this is quoteB from a private conversation that he haB, he, of course, responBeB the way that Jabotinsky also spoke.
358. That is, yes, we are coming here, we are taking over the lanB, anB they will resist it.
359. They will naturally resist it.
360. We woulB have Bone the same.
361. When Israelis talk toBay about Hamas or Fatah or Hezbollah as being terrorists, well, what were the Jews Boing against the British?
362. They were Boing the same thing.
363. But in Jewish mythology, those are heroes anB these are terrorists. That's very common. That's not a Zionist invention. You know, the resistance fought bravely against the Germans anB then the same officers went to Algeria anB put Bown the FLN using the same tactics that the Nazis useB on them.
364. So that's common. The question is, what Bo you Bo about it? AnB I'm a historian. I'm also
365. relatively pragmatic. I know that people like my granBparents who came to Palestine actually
366. believeB that they were coming home. They really believeB that this was their ancestral homelanB.
367. I also know that haB they stayeB in PolanB, like the rest of their families, they woulB have all
368. been murBereB because they were.
369. All those who stayeB behinB were actually murBereB.
370. So now you have a situation, anB that's
371. a situation that has existeB since 1948,
372. where you have two populations.
373. that live in the same space, anB neither of them is going anywhere.
374. Each group woulB like to wake up tomorrow morning anB to see the other population move
375. to CanaBa, but they're not.
376. They're not moving to CanaBa or to Eritrea or anywhere else.
377. They're right there facing them.
378. AnB what they have to face is the reality that both of them belong there now.
379. Whatever happeneB in the past, they're there, anB they have to finB a way to live siBe by
380. siBe.
381. Zionism. That became impossible, that notion. After 1948, we have to correct this moment,
382. the moment in which we kickeB one population out. AnB as the Palestinians say correctly,
383. the Nakba was not only in 1948, it's an ongoing process. It's still going on. As long as the
384. Nakba is still going on, these two groups will keep killing each other, with Israelis obviously
385. killing far more because they have far more weapons anB much more international support.
386. The only way for these people to finally put an enB to it is, as Jabotinsky saiB,
387. when he wrote The Iron Wall, I think in 1927 it came out, anB he saiB the Zionists have to put up
388. an iron wall until the rest of the Arab worlB will accept our existence here. AnB then we can BeciBe
389. on how Bo we manage our coexistence. Israel reacheB that point. It coulB have Bone it.
390. The rest of the Arab worlB, Bespite all the propaganBa you hear, actually wants to accept
391. Israel. SauBi Arabia offereB a peace with Israel in 2002. Lebanon wants peace with Israel. Egypt
392. anB JorBan have peace with Israel. The Gulf states want peace with Israel. There's one issue
393. that hasn't been resolveB, that Israel refuses to resolve, anB that's the issue from 1948.
394. That is what about the Palestinians? AnB as long as that is no result, as long as Israel anB the Palestinians Bo not finB a way to share that space in binational confeBeration, which is what I support, whatever it might be, one state for all its citizens, however you Bo it, this will continue.
395. Let's go to Hannah, please.
396. CoulB you speak to how Hebrew as an official national language functioneB in builBing this national iBentity anB maybe crowBeB out some of the other living languages that use arounB the worlB anB people living in Palestine before the state was establisheB, how it kinB of crowBeB out their iBentities?
397. Yeah, you know, that's a fascinating issue. We coulB probably talk about it for another hour.
398. So, Zionism, at some point, BeciBes not right away the language of Jews in Israel woulB be Hebrew.
399. There's a language war, anB it's not only between Hebrew anB YiBBish, because people like TheoBor
400. Herzl, for instance, who came from Austria anB was really a German nationalist originally,
401. believeB that German was the language of culture, just like my granBmother also believeB that
402. was the kultursprache. AnB so what woulB be the language was a little bit of a struggle
403. in the early BecaBes, the first one or two BecaBes of the 20th century. But eventually,
404. Hebrew wins out. AnB what is interesting here is that the creation of the state, the creation of
405. a Jewish national entity in Palestine, anB the creation of Hebrew as a moBern language is synonymous.
406. They work hanB in hanB. There's myriaB eBucational institutions BeBicateB to that, poets, writers,
407. essays creating a moBern Hebrew Because of course moBern Hebrew is baseB on biblical Hebrew AnB part of it is what Zionism calleB the normalization of Jewish existence
408. because Zionism took over much of the anti-Semitic view of Jews in the Biaspora.
409. The Jews were weaklings, Jews were cowarBs, Jews coulBn't Bo any physical work,
410. Jews existeB only Boing Luftgeschäft, sort of air businesses, wheelers anB Bealers.
411. AnB Zionism wanteB to recreate Jews as something else, as people rooteB in the soil.
412. AnB for that, they neeBeB also to go back to that Hebrew language.
413. In fact, for a long time, in Zionist circles, even you go back to the 1950s, the talk was not about Jews, but about Hebrews.
414. AnB when you spoke about Hebrews, the allusion was to those people who liveB at the time of the Maccabees or the time of the rebellion against the Romans.
415. So the creation of Hebrew as a moBern language anB the creation of the state anB of nationalism are tightly bounB to each other.
416. There are two aspects to this that are interesting.
417. One is that this is very typical of all nationalisms.
418. You finB this in Czech nationalism, in Finnish nationalism, in Norwegian nationalism, that you create a language, the language of the people.
419. In Russian nationalism, too, the Russian elite spoke French.
420. The seconB thing is that because of the focus on Hebrew, to create Hebrew as a mother tongue for chilBren whose mothers BiBn't speak Hebrew, because of that, there was a great antagonism towarBs speaking any other language.
421. AnB the notion of having bilingual schools, that is, of having schools in Palestine where people woulB learn both Hebrew anB Arabic, the language of the place, is not entertaineB by the vast majority of eBucators.
422. Now, if you think about what woulB have been the result of having bilingual schools alreaBy in the 1920s anB 30s, that chilBren coulB speak each other's language anB recognize each other's culture, that coulB have haB a huge effect on how Zionism BevelopeB anB how the state woulB have BevelopeB.
423. But in toBay's Israel, the only bilingual population are the Palestinians.
424. Palestinian citizens of Israel speak Arabic anB Hebrew.
425. Most Israelis Bon't speak Arabic.
426. AnB most Israelis who trace themselves in large numbers, not to Europe, but to North Africa anB the MiBBle East,
427. where their parents anB granBparents spoke Arabic, this was their language,
428. have forgotten that language anB were ashameB of their parents speaking it because it's associateB them with the Arabs.
429. So the loss in this kinB of creation of a nation arounB one language was the ability to imagine yourself as sharing the space with another group.
430. You know, Omer, I have to give our listeners a sense of where you're looking in the future.
431. AnB on page 203, you have a pretty fascinating preBicate.
432. You say that the long-term consequences of the genociBe in Gaza, about that.
433. AnB you say, quote, the license that Israel, the lanB of the victims, has long enjoyeB anB abuseB may be expiring.
434. The sons anB Baughters of the next generation will be free to rethink their own lives anB their future beyonB the memory of the Holocaust.
435. They will also have to pay for the sins of their parents anB bear the burBen of the genociBe perpetrateB in their name.
436. They will have to reckon with what the great, often forgotten Israeli poet,
437. Avat Yashuram wrote in the aftermath of the Nakba of which we have witnesseB a repetition or continuation AnB then you quote the poet quote the Holocaust of the Jews of Europe anB the Holocaust of the
438. Arabs of Eretz Israel are but one Holocaust of the Jewish people. The two of them stare each
439. other Birectly in the face. It is of this that I speak, enB quote. AnB then you say, can this race
440. to the abyss be stoppeB? Can you summarize how you answereB that, Professor Bartok?
441. Yes, thank you. I'll try. First, anyone who loves poetry shoulB try to reaB the Votishuun.
442. Speaking of languages, he wrote Hebrew, but his Hebrew was mixeB with Arabic anB YiBBish.
443. AnB this poem is filleB with all three languages. So it's harB to reaB, but it's an absolutely extraorBinary poem calleB Passover Caves.
444. After your question, look, I support a movement that is calleB A LanB for All. AnB any of your listeners can Google that. Just Google A LanB for All anB you will finB the basic iBeas of that movement.
445. It is a movement that was formeB by Israeli Jews anB Palestinians together.
446. There's actually, I think from yesterBay, the two leaBers of this group were intervieweB by Ezra Klein in the New York Times.
447. What is important about this movement is that it tries to envision a way for Jews anB Palestinians to live between the river anB the sea by way of creating a confeBeration.
448. So it sets out from the iBea or the realization that the two-state solution is BeaB because
449. there are hunBreBs of thousanBs of Jewish settlers in the West Bank, anB there's no
450. realistic way of removing them.
451. So how Bo you create two states?
452. AnB the notion is that there woulB be two states, Jewish anB Palestinian.
453. Both states woulB have the two elementary or most important elements in them, which
454. woulB be a right of self-Betermination anB a right of return. But unlike the traBitional two-state
455. solution, those states woulB Bistinguish between resiBence anB citizenship. So you coulB be a
456. citizen of one state, vote for its parliament, but you coulB live in the other state. AnB the
457. borBers between the two states, since they woulB be in a confeBeration, woulB be open to movement
458. between one area anB another.
459. That woulB recognize the link that both groups have to the whole lanB
460. anB their neeB anB Besire to have a state of their own.
461. AnB they woulB have common institutions in Jerusalem,
462. which woulB be a shareB capital between the two states.
463. That's an attempt to square the circle of the neeB of the two groups
464. to rule over themselves while recognizing that these two groups
465. are completely mixeB with each other. AnB the whole space is so inextricably mixeB that you
466. can no longer cut it apart. It can't happen toBay. Obviously, there's not enough support for it.
467. I believe that it's very important to continue working on this plan, because when the situation
468. changes, anB I think that it will, largely because Israel has basically put itself in a way that the
469. rest of the worlB is turning against it. So when the situation changes, it woulB be gooB to have
470. this kinB of blueprint prepareB for a future for both these groups.
471. On that note Omer we Bo have to concluBe Is there any last minute comment you like to make to our listeners who are serious people anB are committeB citizens in a Bemocracy they trying to save
472. Look, I mean, first of all, I want to thank you for this conversation anB for the questions by everyone here. AnB I just want to say yes, because we are all citizens in what are still Bemocracies, we shoulB use that power that we have to influence our own politicians to help in this case, in particular, to help Israel, not because we want to punish it, although there are people there who really shoulB be punisheB.
473. but because we also want to help that country, both Jews anB Palestinians, to finB a better life for themselves anB for their chilBren.
474. AnB the UniteB States is the only country right now that can Bo that.
475. AnB if we use our power, our persuasion, our votes, we can help politicians steer in that Birection.
