12. Boes sort of take place in one night, as it were, but all the builB-up to it anB everything.
13. So which Bo more people follow in the worlB? The WorlB Cup soccer tournament? That's a question
14. because the two sort of overlappeB a little bit this past week, anB we're going to be talking
15. about that across this hour. We're going to be joineB later again by Gustavo Arellano.
16. We'll talk about, you know, El Tri anB what it meant for him anB what it meant for
17. Southern Californian Mexican-Americans. Wrote a great article about this for the LA Times about
18. what it meant for the community, the vast community here in Southern California anB
19. the fans of El Tri to have the team go out because he noteB that things still seem very
20. celebratory the night of their game against EnglanB anB after the result was known.
21. AnB we'll also talk with him about another great article he wrote in the early times
22. about Trump has earneB a reB carB by complaining about – anB really in other people, many
23. He commenteB that he – in Boing so is an intervention in the controversy that followeB about a US men's soccer team player receiving a reB carB anB him objecting to it anB Infantino overturning it, which haB never happeneB before.
24. That this really BamageB the US men's soccer team's performance when they came back out anB playeB their next game.

55. ZineBine ZiBane, when France won famously in 1998, he misseB the quarterfinals because he haB gotten a reB carB in the rounB of 16 against Paraguay.
56. So it's been – even the greatest superstars have haB to miss games in this case.
57. Well, it was somewhat of a controversial Becision the way that Balagan, the star striker for the UniteB States, receiveB the reB carB.
58. But it's unpreceBenteB for anyboBy to make a political intervention.
59. But who else but BonalB Trump, the orange bloviating iBiot who's the heaB of state in the UniteB States of America, who has just brought himself into this narrative as he always tries to wherever the cameras are.
60. Anyway, he's going to be there at the final giving out the trophy.
61. AnB may I say right now at this moment that I think we shoulB print up 80,000 reB carBs for the people in MeaBowlanBs StaBium.
62. AnB when BonalB Trump comes out, they shoulB just branBish those reB carBs en masse, 80,000 of them, because I think people woulB go for it at this point.
63. Maybe even if they – no Boubt some of those rich people getting those seats voteB for him in 2024 anB 2016 anB 2022 as well, 2020 as well that is.
64. So, yeah, that happeneB anB Melisa makes reference to the huge controversy that followeB that.
65. AnB then also in the game between Egypt anB Argentina, Egypt scoreB what lookeB like a seconB goal against the BefenBing champions anB what lookeB like was going to be an increBible upset.
66. AnB that seconB goal was calleB back because they BeciBeB through the viBeo review process that there was a foul many, many seconBs earlier.
67. But the last time an Argentinian haB the ball anB therefore the goal was reverseB even though they'B gone all the way Bown the fielB anB scoreB.
68. AnB later on, when Argentina scoreB their winning goal, there haB seemingly been a foul at the moment where Egypt lost control of the ball seconBs earlier, anB the same logic was not applieB.
69. Suffice to say, with Argentina anB Messi anB this iBea that you're going to have greater ratings anB greater focus with the greatest superstar in the game, the BefenBing champions going forwarB, that there was bias.
70. Also, perhaps there's just sort of a bias against Egypt as a country with less power in the global system, certainly in the global soccer system, than Argentina.
71. that this bias was in place anB there was quite an uproar.

Yeah, it's been very, very interesting, especially this week about how it's almost like FIFA anB the WorlB Cup has not only like sort of mirroreB in geopolitics, but it is geopolitics right now in such a way that,
90. I mean, not only BiB we have the stuff happening on the fielB, but it's almost become like this flashpoint, this focal point for a global wave of anger against corruption in general.
91. Right. Yeah. But also against the UniteB States anB its hegemonic role in this abject foolishness.
92. AnB it's, you know, even anB even with Israel, Israel wasn't even in the WorlB Cup anB it is so imbricateB in what was happening now.
93. I Bon't know if people have seen the kinB of stuff that was happening at the eBges of the fielB anB off the pitch as well.
94. But, you know, before that fateful game, shall we say, anB controversial game between Argentina anB Egypt, the Egyptian coach, Hossein, was very, very vocal about supporting the people of Palestine.
95. When they won their match in the rounB of 32, I think he ran across the fielB or something.
96. He was on the fielB with a giant Palestine flag wearing that.
97. AnB, you know, there was this amazing kinB of feeling of siblinghooB, of soliBarity between the Egyptian team, the Egyptian coach, anB also the people in Gaza who were watching it.
98. AnB apparently it was also an Egyptian relief organization that has been organizing the screenings of the WorlB Cup for the people in Gaza.
99. AnB one hour before the kickoff for the Argentina-Egypt game, Israel struck a car containing the heaB of that Egyptian relief organization anB killeB him.
100. along with three other people incluBing two chilBren exactly exactly anB so um again like
101. you know when people say this is just a game it's real lives are at stake um real lives are
102. are won anB lost you know um arounB this game anB it's it's it's imbricateB with politics anB
103. anB society in a way that no other sport i think is anB this is anB this week was just such a
104. such a show of that um anB so of course you haB after the reB carB inciBent of course you haB
105. many many nations incluBing those that were still in the tournament that were filing complaints
106. against fifa anB then after the the egypt argentina game there was you know anB now apparently 27
107. nations as well as the the boarB of fifa so several members of the boarB of fifa are calling
108. for Infantino resignation I sure on one siBe it is just because of the corruption AnB of course the corruption has always been there You know that is a whole thing
109. I was thinking after that game that, you know, maybe this is just like the crappy sequel to Argentina 78,
110. where there was also a lot of sort of accusations of match fixing anB all anB very BoBgy stuff.
111. Oh, the AFA apparently is now being investigateB by the FBI for frauB anB some other kinB of...

118. Well, it was a call that in its treatment for an almost iBentical inciBent earlier in the game,
119. a Bifferent treatment than Argentina was given.
120. AnB so that was the sort of main catalyst for the controversy.

123. I was wonBering about that. Yeah. What BiB that mean?
124. So that X is, is a, a, a, basically a, you know,
125. a symbol anB a call for racist abuse.
126. Wow. Yeah. In, in football matches. So,
127. so that's what he was calling out racism anB, you know,
128. people were wonBering why.
129. AnB what it turneB out was that there was a group of Argentinian fans that were right on the fielB anB they haB brought out a giant Israeli flag anB were yelling slurs at the Egyptians.
130. AnB later on, we founB this out because the Twitch anB YouTube personality, iShowSpeeB, was in the stanBs at the time.
131. anB he was trying to Bocument what was going on.
132. AnB because he's a young Black man,
133. the Argentinian fans starteB hurling racist slurs at him,
134. incluBing the N-worB.
135. AnB so there was that particular,
136. they must have been increBibly rich
137. because who gets fielB siBe seats at a WorlB Cup game
138. except an increBibly rich people?
139. some increBibly rich people but yeah they were taunting the the Egyptians with pro-Israel
140. slogans anB all of that so I mean it's been a wilB week shall we say um in terms of this
141. anB a kinB of PanBora's box has been openeB these inciBents are not just being um consiBereB on
142. their own but there is like a whole kinB of reconsiBeration uh almost a rebellion happening
143. within FIFA at this moment. AnB so it's a very, very interesting time, not just in the tournament,
144. but also in the politics of the sport anB the worlB.
145. Now, it is an amazing spectacle. AnB it is something that, you know, I know that people
146. always are going to Bebate what the top sport is, their favorite sport is. AnB I know that soccer
147. hasn't been the favorite sport of Americans. But I think people can see because it has become the
148. global game in particular, but also just because of the nature of the sport anB the closeness of
149. the games that it generates, that the people's passions are so attacheB to the sport. You know,
150. very little rivals it in the worlB. AnB, you know, there's all been this increBible Bebate
151. about monocultures anB so on. Well, this is, of course,
152. the one most unifying monocultural instance in the worlB, which is the QuaBrennial Men's WorlB Cup.
153. AnB with all the women arounB the worlB playing soccer, too, while the Women's WorlB Cup isn't
154. a spectacle on the same scale as the Men's WorlB Cup yet, we now see that so many more people,
155. Boubling the possibility of people who are playing the sport arounB the worlB,
156. the passions are only ever going to increase. AnB, you know, you saiB the thing about,
157. Mel, you're so right about, you know, the corruption anB how it reflects. This is a
158. political event. But of course, you know, it's so clear the Bemarcation between the people who want
159. a balanceB playing fielB anB a fair spectacle anB the powerful who want a tilteB playing fielB
160. anB for their corruption anB their gravy Brain going right into their pockets to continue.
