17. Hmm. Modern times and the mango menace. His touch is everywhere, including his taste.
18. Meanwhile, you know, every civilization eventually develops a sacred cow. Some cultures worship the
19. sun. Some worshiped kings. Some worshiped piles of shiny rocks. Washington, being a modern and
20. sophisticated empire has achieved something far more advanced. It has learned to worship
21. a filing cabinet. Now, what's in the filing cabinet, you wonder? Well, the fact that nobody's
22. allowed to open it, and nowhere is this miracle of modern governance more impressive than in the
23. ongoing discussion about Israel's nuclear weapons program. It's a discussion conducted according to
24. the highest standards of political theater. It's a discussion which everybody knows, nobody says,
25. and anyone who asks too many questions is treated like a guy who just stood up at a funeral
26. and demanded to see the accounting records. Now, recently, Representative Joaquin Castro asked
27. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a remarkably simple question. So what about Israel's nuclear
28. weapons? Now, in a healthy democracy, that question would produce an answer. In Washington,
29. it produced interpretive dance. Rubio explained that a cherished feature of American policy
30. is refusing to acknowledge their existence for a quote variety of reasons A variety of reasons That government language for please stop asking before someone has to invent a committee
31. Now, even better, he offered to discuss the matter in a hearing closed to the public. Because if
32. there's one thing that inspires confidence in a democracy, it's when elected officials say,
33. excellent question. The voters are not allowed to hear the answer. Meanwhile, Congress is debating
34. legislation involving Lebanon, military integration measures between the United States and Israel,
35. questions surrounding war powers. Finally, the gears of empire continue turning like an
36. industrial strength blender filled with taxpayer money and diplomatic contradictions. And then
37. there's the larger question. If these weapons exist, and virtually every serious observer on
38. the planet believes they do exist, more than a hundred, what exactly are the rules governing
39. them? What are the red lines that somebody wouldn't cross? What circumstances might trigger
40. their use? Who knows? Maybe not even the people claiming not to acknowledge they exist. It's a
41. masterpiece. Imagine buying a car, insuring that car, paying taxes on that car, maintaining that
42. car, and then being told you're not permitted to discuss whether that car exists. That's the level
43. of sophistication we're dealing with here. The story gets even stranger. The Israeli nuclear
44. program was exposed decades ago by a guy named Mordecai Venunu. He was a technician at the
45. Dimona facility in southern Israel. He went to London to publish the story, was lured to Rome,
46. captured by Mossad, then put in a slammer in Israel for 18 years in a cell no larger than a bathroom.
47. History has lots of categories for people who reveal secrets. Whistleblower,
48. traitor, hero, crank, visionary. The classification often depends less on what they revealed
49. than on who got embarrassed by what they revealed.
50. Meanwhile, Washington continues the grand tradition of strategic squinting.
51. Not blindness, squinting.
52. The kind where everyone can see the elephant standing in the middle of the room
53. but agrees to describe it as a possible furniture-related anomaly.
54. And that's why today's conversation matters.
55. Because regardless of where you stand politically,
56. nuclear weapons are one of the few subjects capable of ending every argument on earth
57. simultaneously and quite permanently. Now, normally when Washington doesn't want you
58. looking at something, it hides behind a stack of classified folders, a dozen lawyers, three
59. retired generals, and a press secretary who's developed an Olympic level ability to answer
60. questions that nobody asked. But every once in a while, somebody comes along and starts
61. digging through the attic anyway. Our guest today here on the Cary Harrison Files is one of those
62. people. John Steinbach is co-founder of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Committee of the National
63. Capital Area and one of the longest standing researchers examining Israel's nuclear weapons
64. program its history its strategic implications and the political machinery that spent decades pretending the whole subject is roughly as real as Bigfoot riding a gelded unicorn through a McDonald parking lot And make no mistake this isn some dusty academic
65. argument buried in a forgotten filing cabinet. We're talking about one of the biggest open
66. secrets in modern international politics. A secret so secret that newspapers write about it,
67. Former officials talk about it.
68. Foreign governments talk about it.
69. Researchers talk about it.
70. Everybody talks about it, except apparently the people officially responsible for talking about it.
71. So today, we're going to drag this sacred cow directly into the middle of the room.
72. We're going to grab its udders.
73. We're going to squirt the lactate of enlightenment right out of your radio speakers.
74. John Steinbach, welcome to the Cary Harrison Files.
75. Well, thank you, Kerry, for being here. It's a pleasure, and I'll do my best to inform the listenership about any questions you have.
76. Let's start with the question Washington has spent generations treating like a live hand grenade wrapped in legal paperwork.
77. How large and technologically sophisticated do you believe Israel's nuclear arsenal is today compared with other declared nuclear powers?
78. Oh, it's comparable to Britain's arsenal, France's arsenal, China's arsenal, both in terms of numbers and in terms of sophistication.
79. Probably actually more advanced than them in terms of its ability to deliver them.
80. So, for example, they have five dolphin class submarines that were given to them by Germany.
81. These are diesel submarines, but they have advanced propulsion systems that allow them to sail more than 10,000 kilometers.
82. They can sail thousands of kilometers underwater submerged because of sophisticated fuel cell systems.
83. We know that they have tested cruise missiles, nuclear capable cruise missiles that have traveled about a thousand kilometers.
84. These submarines are constantly out in the ocean, in the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, virtually everywhere, and capable of reaching virtually all of Asia, all of Europe, capable of reaching Moscow.
85. Also, in addition to that, they have three different kinds of Jericho missiles, all of which are nuclear capable.
86. the Jericho 3 that we don't really know very much about, but we do know that at one point Israel
87. launched a satellite into reverse orbit. So it launched it against the rotation of the earth,
88. which takes a tremendous amount of power. And that implied that they have a true ICBM and that
89. they can easily reach the east coast of the United States. So comparable to France and Britain and
90. China, but more advanced in terms of the capability to measure them. And just going back to Veneno,
91. so that was back in 1988. And Veneno smuggled out hundreds or thousands of photographs
92. House, and top secret documents. The Sunday London Times brought in Ted Taylor and Frank
93. Barnaby Those were two nuclear weapons designers American from the Manhattan Project They analyzed it all They decided at that point in 1988 that Israel had an arsenal of 200 weapons and Barnaby analyzed that they had neutron bombs that they had hydrogen bombs
94. and they were capable at that point of making at least 20 additional bombs every year.
95. So Damona has been an operation.
96. I'll finish and let you jump in.
97. Damona has been an operation since then.
98. In fact, it's one of the oldest operating reactors on the planet,
99. long past the stage that it should have been put down.
100. So the bottom line is, whether Israel has 100 nuclear weapons or 500, it really doesn't matter.
101. They still are in a position to destroy any city halfway around the globe and precipitate a nuclear catastrophe.
102. We're talking to John Steinbach, co-founder of the Hiroshima Nagasaki Peace Committee,

104. the political machinery that spent decades pretending that there's no there there. So now
105. that we know they can take out the world several times over, it's a big secret that's not a secret.
106. The big question that everyone has that's obvious is why, why has official U.S. policy maintained
107. ambiguity regarding Israel's nuclear weapons for so many decades? So we have to go back to the
108. early 1960s, the Eisenhower administration. So the Eisenhower administration became aware of the
109. Israeli nuclear weapons program. It was very concerned. It demanded explanations. Israel
110. gave all kinds of excuses, never came clean. Eisenhower and Kennedy conferred. Both of them
111. were very concerned. At that point, construction had begun on the Damona plant. That's the main
112. weapons factory where they produced the plutonium. And Kennedy demanded that Israel permit
113. inspections and forced Israel to permit a delegation of American scientists to go there.
114. So Israel went to great extremes in order to fool those scientists. So one of the things that it did
115. is that it had illegally bought a control panel from a company in the United States.
116. They ordered a second control panel, and they put that in as a dummy control room.
117. So when the scientists came, they were shown the dummy control room.
118. And at the same time, Damona is eight stories deep into the Negev Desert.
119. And the Israelis blocked off the elevator shaft so that the inspecting team couldn't get in. So they thought they were looking at something that was completely different. They were still suspicious. They went back, reported to Kennedy about their suspicions.
120. suspicions, Kennedy continued to exert extreme pressure.
121. That was at the point when he was assassinated.
122. Then enter LBJ who was much, much vastly, vastly
123. more sympathetic to Israel.
124. So Golda Meir and LBJ got together and LBJ brought
125. backed off. And then at that point, Meir met with Nixon when Nixon was elected. And that was how the
126. agreement came that the government knew unequivocally at that point in the early 70s
127. that Israel had nukes. At that point, they had maybe two dozen nukes, say, by 1973.
128. so that was where i'm just going to jump in john just for a second because i need to let people

136. on with Israel. We know that there's conflicts. We're going to call them that because that's what
137. we're told they're called. They're called conflicts, but they're extraordinary genocidal
138. level assassinations happening all over in the Middle East. And as Americans, as Europeans,
139. as anybody, I'm in Canada at the moment, in Montreal, how concerned should live humans be
140. about discussions inside government regarding possible nuclear use scenarios in the Middle East?
141. Well, no, I think that we should be concerned about it, not just Israel, but the United States.
142. It's clear that Trump is increasingly erratic.
143. I mean, in the vernacular, Trump has lost his marbles.
144. So there's that threat.
145. There's Israel with their policy of using nuclear weapons as a last resort, which is somewhat misleading.
146. Seymour Hersh wrote a book called The Samson Option.
147. But if you read the book, it's very clear that to what degree Israel intended nuclear weapons as an insurance against another Holocaust.
148. The reality is that Israel has used its nuclear weapons dozens and dozens, if not hundreds of times.
149. By the way, exactly the way the U.S. has used its nuclear weapons hundreds and hundreds of times, thanks to Daniel Ellsberg and others. And that is using nuclear weapons as a threat in order to get what it wants.
150. So the Israelis actually have a policy called non-conventional compelence. That was coined by Shimon Peres. And the idea is, is they're going to use nuclear weapons in order to threaten the Arab states, also to threaten the United States, by the way.
151. So if you go back to 1957, right when Israel was first collaborating with France, the director of the French program, Francis Perrin, said, we always thought that the Israeli nuclear program was directed at the United States.
152. not so much to use nuclear weapons but to threaten to use nuclear weapons if the U did not come to Israel support And the most clear example of that was in 1973 in the Yom Kippur War So Israel at that point was facing a major strategic
153. defeat. And they appealed to Nixon and Kissinger for a massive airlift of military supplies. And
154. Kissinger and Nixon were very reluctant, and they said no. And the Israeli ambassador said,
155. essentially paraphrasing him, if you do not airlift supplies immediately, we are going to
156. have to take unconventional action, which you're going to regret. And so at that point,
157. Nixon and Kissinger came down. We had the 1973 arm lift, which was the largest in history.
158. that precipitated a major nuclear showdown with the Soviet Union.
159. They went to their version of DEFCON 4.
160. And so that's an example of how Israel has used nuclear weapons over and over and over again.
161. And just a couple of days ago, President Trump literally said that he was going to bomb the out of Iran.
162. just completely decimate them, then changed his mind, thankfully. So using nukes is on the table.
163. If using the nukes for the U.S. is on the table, does that not give explicit permission to our
164. biggest ally in the Middle East to also seriously consider that? It's what you've been saying,
165. but now there's permission. Yeah, yes, I think so. I think that
166. Israel probably does not need permission. So you'll notice that Trump did one of his,
167. you know, I'm going to bomb the heck out of them and no, I'm going to sign a peace treaty thing.
168. And Netanyahu kind of caved in to Trump and said, OK, well, I'm not going to bomb Beirut.
169. And then there was a firestorm in Israel. So everybody from, you know, Ben-Gavir to the liberal labor people are saying, oh, no, no, no, no, no, you can't kowtow to the U.S., you have to bomb Beirut, you can't back down.
170. So that's the dynamic that we're dealing with. You know, the reality is, if Iran or if Israel used nuclear weapons against Iran, even if they used the number of them, even if they obliterated Tehran, I do not think it would change the status quo.
171. It would simply make Iran more determined. It would force China and Russia to take a stronger position in Pakistan as well. Pakistan, by the way, also has nukes and has not signed the NPT.
172. And here we are, you know, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, I believe Albert Einstein was instrumental in starting that, which has a theoretical clock, how many seconds or minutes until midnight when there's just, you know, it becomes nuclear war and that thing keeps ticking closer and closer and closer.
173. to your mind memory, your institutional memory,
174. have we ever been on the precipice this tight
175. other than maybe during the Cold War a few times?
176. Has the whole world ever been so simultaneously
177. and synchronously imbalanced all at the same time Well there were a couple instances during the Cold War Yuri Andrei I can remember his name now So one of the Soviet commanders and
178. submarine commanders in 1963 countermanded in order to launch nuclear torpedoes against U.S.
179. naval ships off the coast of Cuba. And had he not done that, we would not be talking here today.
180. There was also an incident of Abel Archer in 1983, I believe it was. And that was massive
181. war games. This was when Reagan was talking about the evil empire and Alexander Haig was talking
182. about nuclear warning shots over Europe. And it was a massive war game that the Soviets thought
183. was the real deal. And that came extremely, extremely close. So there have been a number
184. of instances, even a couple of years ago when the Ukraine situation was bad and you had,
185. you know, Biden and Blinken, and Biden and Blinken had cut off all communications with Russia. So
186. There was no communications whatsoever.
187. And that was also bad.
188. But today we have the Ukrainian war still spiraling out of control.
189. We have the situation in the Middle East that could spiral out of control.
190. Again, if nuclear weapons are used, the A-bomb survivors, and I've worked closely with them for the last 40 plus years,
191. They believe if the nuclear threshold is ever breached again, that it will be impossible to stop a chain reaction from taking place and essentially the end of the world. And my understanding is virtually every war game that has been planned by the Pentagon that involves the use of nuclear weapons has ended in uncontrolled escalation.
192. And we've seen recently, in fact, we talked about it last week, Grok, Elon Musk's AI, Elon Musk, now a trillionaire, forcing his SpaceX IPO into everything that everyone owns. So it worked. Poof. He's a trillionaire.
193. But his AI, Grok, was, when handed the keys to Earth, destroyed all living creatures in only four days. And of course, it is his mission to hand Grok over to the Pentagon and have it control these nuclear weapons. Another discussion for another time.
194. Let's finish, John Steinbach, with what can we do?
195. Because, boy, just a glass of poison is hardly a thirst quencher here.
196. If policymakers, we certainly know that in many parts of the world, genuinely want greater transparency and reduced nuclear risk in all regions, what concrete steps can they take first?
197. Well, I think the good news is that overwhelmingly public opinion polls since the early 1950s show overwhelmingly the population of the planet wants to abolish nuclear weapons.
198. We also have the Nuclear Non-Peripheration Treaty that, by the way, Iran, Israel has not signed,
199. and Pakistan, India, and North Korea have not signed. They all have nukes. They never signed it.
200. Iran did sign it by the way and has been the subject of unprecedented inspections of their nuclear program So the good news is overwhelmingly the public is opposed to nuclear weapons Also if we look back at the anti
201. movement itself, to a great extent, it came out of the non-aligned movement, NARO and Nyeri in
202. Africa and many Sukarno who were instrumental in getting us the NPT and getting the Comprehensive
203. Test Ban Treaty. So the majority of the nations of the world are still firmly, you know, they're
204. adhering to the NPT. The problem is the nuclear weapons powers who also signed the NPT were
205. obligated to disarm in a timely manner, and that has not happened. And that's why we've seen over
206. the last 15 years, 20 years, the non-proliferation review treaty at the UN has ended in disarray.
207. And it's everything I've seen this time, it's the same thing. So the NPT is on the rope. So
208. what we need to do is to continue to bring pressure to bear on elected officials. And we
209. need to be in the streets and we need to be making the connection between nuclear weapons
210. and war in general, because Martin Short wrote a book, The Dialectics of War, and he said you
211. can't separate nuclear weapons from war, that any war at any point in time can turn into a nuclear
212. war. So let's get out in the streets, let's stop this madness in Iran, and let's continue to work
213. until we've abolished all nuclear weapons. Very much appreciate having you on, John Steinbach.

284. kitchen appliances. And now, according to reports out of China, we've apparently entered the era of
285. competitive defecation technology, or CDT as I like to call it. A Chinese carmaker has patented
286. a toilet that slides out from underneath the passenger seat. Not the trunk. This is not some
287. luxury RV package. Directly under the seat. It's on rails, right there beside the cup holders and
288. the charging ports like it's the most natural thing in the world. Think about the engineering
289. meeting. Some poor engineer who spent 20 years studying thermodynamics, advanced materials,
290. fluid mechanics, electrical systems, finds himself standing in a conference room saying,
291. what if Brenda could drop a spike while merging onto the freeway?
292. And apparently someone replied, promote that man immediately. This patent includes a waste tank,
293. an odor exhaust system, voice controls, and a heating mechanism to dry stuff afterwards.
294. A heating mechanism, because somewhere in the future, sits a customer service representative
295. whose entire job description is explaining why the onboard BM dehydrator isn syncing properly with the mobile app Have you tried restarting the toilet sir Now now look the patent may never become a real car if we lucky Maybe it die in development Maybe it disappear into the giant junkyard of
296. failed inventions right next to Google Glass or New Coke and whatever happened to the metaverse,
297. if you remember that. But let's not miss the larger point. Every year, we're told technology
298. is bringing humanity closer to some glorious future. Flying taxis, artificial intelligence,
299. robot assistance, Mars colonies, according to Mr. Musk. And after trillions of dollars,
300. trillions trillions enough venture capital to bankrupt several small nations the breakthrough
301. innovation appears to be enjoying a pooch in traffic it's beautiful really america has finally
302. completed the circle the caveman squatted wherever they happen to be standing the future elites will
303. do exactly the same thing except with Bluetooth connectivity. And here's what I want to know.
304. If this thing actually comes to market, what happens when someone buys a used one? Who's that
305. customer? Who strolls into the dealership and says, I'm interested in the certified pre-owned model
306. with the optional heated waste management package? What kind of inspection report comes with that
307. vehicle. What does Carfax even do with this one? One previous owner, minor fender damage,
308. three suspicious biological incidents. And let's talk about the voice commands,
309. because you know, that's where disaster lives. The same people who accidentally text their boss
310. a string of eggplant or moist peach emojis. I know, if you know what I'm talking about.
311. those people are now going to operate a toilet at 70 miles an hour using speech recognition software.
312. What could possibly go wrong?
313. Picture the family road trip.
314. Dad misses an exit.
315. The GPS is screaming.
316. The kids are fighting.
317. The onboard AI is confused.
318. And suddenly, the passenger seat begins transforming into a municipal sanitation facility.
319. So here's what I want from you.

321. Or is this the most honest invention of the 21st century?
322. Has technology finally given up pretending it's curing cancer and solving poverty
323. and simply accepted that humanity's primary concern is finding a bathroom before disaster strikes?

342. technology eventually malfunctions, doesn't it? Your phone freezes, your laptop has crashed,
343. your smart fridge starts coughing out ice cubes. So what happens when the onboard toilet software
344. needs an update halfway through operations. Do you pull over? Maybe you reboot. Do you pray?
345. Here's another one. Would you rather sit in a used car that belonged to a chain smoker
346. or a used car equipped with a frequently utilized passenger seat toilet?
347. This is now. This is where Elon Musk is taking you with self-driving cars. I rented one in
348. Wisconsin for a family reunion two weeks ago, and the thing tried to take over while I was in the
349. expressway. It just kept grabbing the wheel and yanking me between what it imagined the lines were.
350. I can see the lines with my peripheral vision miles ahead. This is a camera looking sort of
351. down and calculating the lines, but it's a beat off. And I'm fighting with this car. This is just
352. the driving portion. Imagine if this thing had shot a turlet out from between my legs.
353. Be honest. What smells worse after five years? Which one has the lower resale value? Which one

367. fair. Those back seats in the Uber need to become fully equipped. And what happens during a traffic
368. stop? How exactly does that conversation go? Excuse me, sir. License, registration, and
369. actually never mind i don't want to know then there's the status question do luxury car owners
370. brag about this to some hedge fund guy stand around a cocktail party saying my car has a 12
371. speaker audio system and another guy responds cute mine has active waste management and voice
372. controlled evacuation technology. At what income level does that become a flex? And parents,
373. I want to hear from parents. Would this be the greatest road trip invention ever created
374. or the worst mistake since giving children permanent markers and unsupervised access to
375. drywall? Could you survive a thousand mile family vacation with one of these?
376. or would you set the vehicle on fire somewhere outside Arkansas and walk home? Here's the big
377. one. What does this say about us? We've got artificial intelligence writing novels now.
378. We've got robots performing surgery. We've got private rockets riding on the back of publicly
379. funded NASA and launching into orbit. And somehow humanity looked at all of that and said, fine,
380. But can the Honda poop? Is this genius or is it insanity? Is it progress or is it the most

460. because, you know, when we think of truck drivers,
461. we think of they're people that, you know, have to do all these deliveries,
462. you know, for Amazon, for Walmart, all these, you know,
463. multi-billion dollar companies that, you know, fund over consumerism.
464. And these truck drivers make money based on how long the wheels are spinning.
465. A lot of them don't even want to be making stops, you know,
466. and they'll hold on to their bladder and hold on to their feces, you know,
467. for however long, don't sleep, et cetera, et cetera.
468. So I'm seeing this really in that demographic of like, yeah, you know, let's just have workers that work literally 24-7 that don't sleep.
469. And let's start giving the world more and more in that, you know, demographic.
470. Maybe we might have Uber drivers that don't even stop to use the bathroom anymore.
471. They just work 24-7 to go pick up people and not even pay attention to their physiological needs.
472. What a brilliant angle. I never considered that.
473. Of course, it's about productivity.
474. It's about keeping people moving, burning more fuel, keeping it going, because nobody
475. is craving this experience, especially with someone watching you next to you.
476. I mean, you'd have to pull down your drawers.

493. a new idea. But back in the 70s, when they used to have campers in the back of our trucks that
494. have a self-contained commode well uh all three of us had to go the same time and my roommate from
495. san diego state opened up the camper door and he did it on the freeway so i think this is an upgrade
496. to the old camper system i was on a train this is i think in the mid 90s i took the silver
497. spruce or whatever it was called up to Washington DC. And it was one of the previous like Pullman
498. trains at the very end when Amtrak was just coming into existence and was refitting train cars and
499. cutting them in thirds and tiny little chunks and making individual cabins. And on the bed under the
500. pillow was a wooden, a piece of wood on a hinge. You'd take your pillow off, pull the hinge up,
501. and then you could sit there. So during the whole train ride, as I'm laying there thinking I'm doing
502. an overnight, you know, in an overnight cabin, there's a sloshing noise. I'd rather hear the
503. rails click than the sloshing noise. So I'm just not a fan. I think just for basic hygiene and good
504. taste. Get out. Do your thing. Get back in. Keep the car clean and tidy. I mean, how much do we
505. spend on detailing and putting on makeup and combing our hair? And then to like do this
