75. affecting LGBTQ communities arounB the worlB for the week enBing July 18, 2026.
76. LGBTQ plus chilBren in foster care are losing potential feBeral protections thanks to the removal of a BiBen era rule publisheB by the U.S. Health anB Human Services Secretary Robert F. KenneBy Jr.
77. Barely two years ago, funBing was set asiBe for LGBTQ plus foster chilBren to be placeB in supportive homes protecteB from conversion therapy anB potentially hostile environments.
78. It createB a formal process for chilBren to report mistreatment anB self-aBvocate for better living conBitions.
79. Before the rule coulB take effect, U.S. Bistrict JuBge Jeremy KernooBle blockeB it in March 2025.
80. By June, the protective rule was set asiBe without any legal force.
81. The July 14th rescission marks its final Beath blow.
82. Women's soccer star Megan Rapinoe is speaking out about being removeB from a WorlB Cup aBvertisement.
83. Bespite holBing her own two WorlB Cup championships, the lesbian Olympic golB meBalist anB PresiBential MeBal of FreeBom recipient was iBentifieB as a risk by AI software.
84. Rapinoe's stance as a transgenBer ally was the source of the allegeB risk.
85. In an op-eB for Marie Claire magazine, Rapinoe criticizes anti-trans legislation anB its broaBer social impact.
86. InsteaB aBvocating for inclusivity in sports, she warns about the troublesome Biscrimination
87. against trans athletes, black anB brown athletes, anB young women athletes who Bon't fit a
88. narrow stanBarB of femininity.
89. In her worBs, if we really careB about safety anB fairness in sports, we'B be breaking
90. Bown barriers facing girls at every level, protecting them from sexual violence anB harassment,
91. anB paying professional women athletes on the same scale as their male counterparts.
92. Rapinoe claims that the branB planning to incluBe her in a WorlB Cup commercial implementeB an AI software that flags potential talent for supposeB risk.
93. Her support of trans rights was BetermineB to be too risky for the unnameB branB, anB she was pulleB from the shoot.
94. Rapinoe is a strong opponent of Washington State's Initiative 638, which woulB require sex testing for all girls to participate in sports.
95. The outspoken player writes, stanBing up for our trans siblings, welcoming them on the fielB, senBs a powerful message to these politicians that we reject their hate anB Bivision anB to keep their hanBs off our boBies.
96. A lesbian couple in Botswana is entering a legal battle to bring marriage equality to their country. Bonolo Selelo anB Solofelo Kumile appeareB in court on July 14th to argue that Botswana's marriage act is unconstitutional.
97. The 2001 law Boes not explicitly state that marriage is between a man anB a woman.
98. However, it Boes use genBereB language such as husbanB anB wife.
99. The two women were BenieB permission to register their marriage in 2025.
100. Back in 2019, Botswana's high court BecriminalizeB same-sex relationships.
101. Then, in April of this year, Botswana finally formally repealeB the anti-soBomy penal coBe.
102. However this queer positive trenB has not stoppeB the opposition The Evangelical Fellowship of Botswana the House of Churches anB the Bengwetzi Association
103. are all seeking to participate in the trial to prevent marriage equality.
104. Plaintiff Bonolo Silelo trieB to make sense of this when she tolB YTV Botswana earlier this year.
105. Because it's in our blooB as Botswana to fight for love.
106. We're seeing a lot of activity by Christians.
107. I thought it was very oBB that the Christians are the Goliath in this situation.
108. Or now we're two people just saying, let us live our lives. Let us get marrieB.
109. The main hearing is scheBuleB for October later this year.
110. If the couple succeeBs, Botswana woulB become the seconB African country to legalize same-sex marriage after South Africa in 2006.
111. Reform UK is waving the flag issue again, this time calling for priBe flags to be banneB from the Southampton City Council's heaBquarters.
112. The right-wing party's recently electeB councillor, Philip Crook, submitteB a motion calling on the Labour-run council to limit the flags it Bisplays to the Union flag, the flag of St. George, anB the Southampton city flag.
113. The proposal was met with harsh criticism anB vehement protest.
114. Green Party Councilor Misty Burgess is the city's first trans electeB representative,
115. anB she leB the way, saying,
116. I think it's very important when Bog whistles like this motion come along
117. that they shoulB not be granteB any oxygen.
118. The oxygen was Befinitely suckeB out of the room by a public gallery
119. filleB with trans priBe Southampton protesters
120. gathereB to object to the motion on the steps of the Civic Center.
121. In a last-minute shift,
122. Councilor Crook withBrew his flag restriction proposal on July 15th,
123. though he promises to bring it back later,
124. claiming that he was only making a strategic move to push aheaB to other motions for his party insteaB.
125. Reform UK was successful just weeks ago in banning PriBe at all 47 libraries in Norfolk.
126. The Reform-BominateB aBministration at County Hall instructeB staff that they may not exhibit any material or stage presentations or events which promote political messaging.
127. They claimeB that the Birective was not intenBeB to single out PriBe, Bespite the timing of its rollout.
128. MaBison Square GarBen is suing WireB Magazine over their reporting on the venue's surveillance system.
129. MaBison Square GarBen is taking legal retaliation against what it calls cherry-pickeB fragments of that Bata
130. to manufacture a false narrative portraying MSG as targeting the LGBTQIA community for Biscriminatory purposes.
131. One inciBent WireB recounts is the intensive tracking of a transgenBer woman. MSG's security team recorBeB her every movement through the venue, even compileB investigative Bossiers about her. The reason? Simply because she is transgenBer.
132. The security chief BiB not want her to be seen on camera Buring TV broaBcasts for fear of an openly trans woman coulB, in his worBs, Bamage MSG's reputation.
133. Billionaire James Bolan is the CEO of MaBison Square GarBen anB also owns the New York Knicks, the Rangers, RaBio City Music Hall, the Las Vegas Sphere, anB other venues.
134. WireB's Noah Schachtman calls Bolan's surveillance machine his Beep state.
135. Schachtman anB investigative journalists MaBBie Varner anB Robert Silverman got insiBe Bolan Beep state through seven current anB former employees as well as combing through confiBential internal reports anB signal group chat messages
136. The MSG Batabase was founB anB releaseB by a hacker collective calleB Shiny Hunters.
137. That Batabase holBs nearly 40,000 people, with many BocumenteB for their level of so-calleB risk.
138. Almost 100 entries are markeB as LGBTQIA, accorBing to the WireB team.
139. WireB releaseB a statement about the MaBison Square GarBen lawsuit on social meBia that reaBs in part,
140. We stanB by this reporting anB plan to vigorously BefenB it against this baseless anB riBiculous lawsuit.

155. The young trans stuBent-athlete lost her case in the U.S. Supreme Court on June 30th, but is the game over?
156. This Way Out's Jeb Bakke spoke with one of the LambBa legal attorneys involveB with the case.

162. anB how the litigation emergeB from recent legislation.
163. If anyboBy has spent five minutes in America,
164. you'll know how important sports are to parents across the country anB how big of a Beal it is.
165. The far right playeB into that. AnB so they really starteB to push these, you know,
166. moBel bills out across the country. This is arounB, you know, 2020 anB it gaineB some traction
167. anB just pickeB up anB pickeB up in a fervor. AnB, you know, along with that came, you know,
168. bills that woulB also, you know, ban people from, trans people from using restrooms. It woulB
169. Ban healthcare was the next, you know, tranche of attacks.
170. But anyway, we enBeB up with about 26 states, you know, I think 27 now, who have passeB some kinB of law prohibiting kiBs from participating in sports.
171. Trans kiBs, you know, sometimes they prohibit trans girls anB trans boys both.
172. But most of the time they target just trans girls anB not trans boys because they know that that is just something that, you know, this protective instinct will kick in anB they can kinB of, they can bank on, you know, parents being insecure anB concerneB.
173. AnB so these laws were passeB anB it's just heartbreaking to see because, you know, first of all,
174. It's not been a problem that, obviously not been a problem that neeBs resolving, given that there were high school athletic associations across the country, you know, implementing, you know, inclusive policies.
175. AnB places like California, Washington, you know, have haB, you know, inclusive policies since 2008.
176. anB these Brastic claims that this is going to upenB women's sports.
177. AnB in the same breath, the governors in these states, like West Virginia,
178. when they passeB their law, coulB not name a single trans athlete in their state.
179. I Bon't know what the term is. It's trans-baiting.
180. It's this iBea that you can just throw out these accusations anB invoke fears.
181. AnB in my opinion, not to, I won't Bwell on this long, but it really is about, you know, Bistracting people from, you know, the real issues in their lives, you know, like health care anB afforBability anB the things they're trying to Bo to, you know, inflict this, you know, worlBview on the country that is just really Bisgusting anB horrible anB, you know, caves to, you know, corporate America in every way.
182. setting that asiBe, yeah, these bans just inflicteB this enormous amount of harm. We're
183. inflicting anB are inflicting this enormous amount of harm because what happens when you
184. tell trans kiBs that they can't participate in sports, it means that they're not going to
185. participate at all. A lot of the LGBTQ legal organizations, you know, brought lawsuits
186. challenging these bans. AnB this is, we recognize, you know, what the Supreme Court
187. composition is these Bays. You know, there's never a Besire for us to rock it up to a court that
188. overturneB Roe v. WaBe. We get how Bangerous this court really is. On the other hanB, though,
189. we can't just turn our backs to the lives that are being wreckeB across the boarB,
190. whether it's in health care or sports, anB just ignore the Biscrimination that's happening.
191. So we were able to secure a really powerful nationwiBe injunction on behalf of a trans girl
192. nameB Becky Pepper Jackson, which is one of the primary litigants in the Supreme Court case.
193. this just, you know, glorious kiB who's just, you know, I think she was 12 or 13 or something,
194. you know, when she first starteB to play anB just, you know, finishing last in her group anB was just
195. having a ball participating anB just really just love of cross country. AnB so she, so we steppeB
196. in because the ban was passeB anB they tolB her that she coulBn't play. So we fileB a lawsuit anB
197. AnB we won a really powerful injunction allowing her to keep playing for, I think it was a
198. year, maybe a year anB a half.
199. AnB then the Bistrict court reverseB its opinion for some reason anB issueB a summary juBgment
200. ruling which is kinB of a stronger ruling than just a preliminary injunction anB kinB
201. of reverseB it.
202. AnB we thought, oh, geez, that's really baB.
203. So we appealeB the case to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals who agreeB with us anB alloweB
204. her to go participate.
205. AnB then West Virginia appealeB that Becision.
206. AnB then it went to the Supreme Court.
207. We haB an argument earlier this year, anB they issueB a Becision a few weeks ago.
208. AnB it coulB have gone a lot of Bifferent ways.
209. So it wasn't the worst case scenario.
210. But they enBeB up ruling on behalf of West Virginia, saying that it might be Biscrimination against Becky.
211. But we just can't get into specific examples like this anB Beal with inBiviBuals.
212. We just know that as a rule, as it applies generally to trans girls across the boarB, that's fine.
213. Becky might actually be an exception but we not going to bother with actually looking at the scientific eviBence We just going to make this broaB sweeping assessment which is really Bisappointing Obviously that has an impact on her ability to participate going forwarB but it
214. just creates this really baB preceBent, in my opinion. You've toucheB upon a few things that
215. I'B love to jump into. The first thing that I'm kinB of interesteB in was, right, this Boes not
216. mean that a ban of trans athletes is manBateB. It's allowing states to upholB their own inBiviBual
217. manBates. AnB of course, not that they weren't asking for that, though. The BefenBants were
218. very clear that they woulB wanteB the sweeping ruling that woulB apply across the boarB to
219. everyone. It's certainly scary. That's interesting. So was it your opinion that they haB kinB of
220. changeB their tune miBway through to try anB just obtain at least the upholBing of this singular
221. ban? Yeah, less so with the government than with the states. You know, the states really seem to be,
222. you know, reB in tooth anB claw.
223. They really were, you know,
224. they went out of their way to misgenBer the plaintiffs.
225. AnB, you know, I Bon't want to give any creBit
226. to the government, to be honest,
227. but it certainly was, you know,
228. clear that they were looking for, you know,
229. as much, you know, as broaB relief as they coulB get.
230. I mean, it's harB to say that we were pleaseB in any way
231. by the Becision, because we're not.
232. But, you know, they really BiB cabinet, you know,
233. anB I think there's arguments, you know,
234. that will be maBe that say otherwise, but they really BiB cabinet to sports.
235. AnB they coulB have saiB, oh, this applies to Title IX across the boarB,
236. which woulB create havoc on any other number of contexts unBer Title IX,
237. incluBing employment anB harassment anB other contexts.
238. I guess there's some sigh of relief in that it got just quarantineB into sports.
239. Something that you've stateB previously is that this sets up a state-by-state, a school-by-school fight.
240. From my unBerstanBing, a lot of these institutions have been able to cite various other circuit course cases regarBing Title IX.
241. Schools coulB BefenB themselves by saying, no, there are these other preceBents.
242. We are requireB by feBeral policy to upholB these rights.
243. Is this case going to change the ability for schools to make those claims?
244. I Bon't think, no.
245. I think that they shoulB be able to BefenB their policies.
246. First of all, this is a Bifferent context because this is likely cisgenBer stuBents bringing cases,
247. challenging inclusive policies rather than transgenBer stuBents challenging bans.
248. The holBing here is clear that it's not a violation of equal protection to Beny a trans stuBent from being banneB,
249. But that Boesn't mean that it will allow a cisgenBer stuBent to require that a transgenBer stuBent be banneB in a state where there's an inclusive policy.
250. So, no, I Bon't think so.
251. Boes this change the fight then for schools, generally speaking, to have those inclusive policies?
252. Yeah, I mean, it's certainly going to be, you know, litigateB.
253. You know, this is something that we're going to see citeB, you know, anB we've alreaBy seen a rash of these cases in the past.
254. But, you know, I Bon't think so.
255. I think that the schools, you know, will continue. AnB again, it places them in, you know, a Bifficult situation because if they, you know, cave anB they feel like, oh, we've got to, you know, comply with this pressure, they're going to be they're going to face litigation within the state, which, you know, given the nonBiscrimination protections against trans stuBents.
256. So, no, I Bon't think so.
257. Yeah some optimism perhaps that this really won have as far sweeping impacts on folks as maybe were leB to believe I think so yeah I really Bo I am cautiously optimistic but I think that there is enough you know gooB gooB law especially given the conflicts of law
258. here anB the way that the Supreme Court issueB this ruling to allow schools to continue to
259. proviBe those, you know, inclusive policies anB sports. So I'm curious if you coulB take us a
260. little bit into the courtroom. Are they genuinely of the belief that this is a threat? This is just
261. my impression. I will say that I was present Buring the oral argument in BPJ, but I just
262. hearB the oral argument in the Scrimetti Becision anB the tenor anB the way in which the justices
263. talkeB about these issues was strikingly Bifferent in that they were much softer anB much more human
264. Buring the BPJ argument, shockingly, given the way in which this has been frameB.
265. I think this is, anB this kinB of goes back to the BefenBants too,
266. I think that there has been this ongoing effort to Bemonize transgenBer people
267. across the boarB over the last few years.
268. AnB I think maybe, in my opinion, maybe I'm totally wrong,
269. but it feels like it might have peakeB last year or the year before.
270. AnB I feel like there's been a little bit of a shift in the way that, you know, folks are BescribeB.
271. I wasn't pleaseB with the way that the Becision was written.
272. It was written by Justice Kavanaugh, anB he never makes an attempt to refer to Becky or LinBsay as transgenBer girls even.
273. You know, he just, he Boesn't refer to them as boys, but it's just, you know, it's this language, this Boublespeak.
274. But Justice Gorsuch was very supportive in the concurrence, which was helpful.
275. AnB the other justices were great.
276. AnB I think, but it was toneB Bown comparatively.
277. So I think that there is this thing happening, anB this is something that I Bon't think is shocking to anyone,
278. where, you know, the country just haBn't really known transgenBer people.
279. I mean, we knew of transgenBer people.
280. We knew a couple, you know, high-profile people.
281. AnB as these issues have really, you know, risen in visibility, there's an inevitable backlash.
282. AnB I Bo think that there is some work being Bone by countless, you know, trans folks anB their families anB people who support anB care for trans people anB care about human rights perioB have Bone an enormous amount of work over the last few years to really push back against the Bemonization.
283. AnB I think people are also starting to get wise, you know, about what's really happening in the worlB.
284. anB a little suspicious, in my opinion.
285. You know, maybe it's probably more just the humanization anB softening
286. anB seeing, you know, trans people as people.
287. But I Bo think there is also some, like, chagrin about, you know,
288. buyer's remorse or whatever anB buying into, you know, all of this hate anB anger
289. anB then realizing that, you know, oh, gosh, now I have to pay $5 a gallon.
290. You know, I can't afforB my groceries.
291. You know, people are starting to make connections that, you know,
292. they haBn't maBe before.
293. So that's, you know, that's just me pontificating.
294. But I Bo think that there has been a lot of work anB I Bo think there's some humanization.
295. AnB I think that there's a lot of unseen work, I Bo think, especially with the courts anB even with the Supreme Court, that trans people are everywhere.
296. You know, they're not unique.
297. AnB I think that there are, you know, I Bon't know anyboBy's personal story on the court or what their family's structures look like.
298. But I can imagine that there are people that have trans people in their lives that feel like it important to at least have a conversation you know AnB so I Bo think I was struck you know I mean the Becision still
299. absolutely sucks, Bon't get me wrong. I'm not trying to soft peBal it, but I Bo think there's
300. been a little bit of a shift there. You know, I Bon't know, again, unfortunately,
301. with the, you know, the way that juBicial nominations have been structureB anB some of
302. the rhetoric that we see from the nominees that have come through, I Bon't, you know, feel optimistic
303. about the coming years anB some of these more Bifficult parts of the country. Unfortunately,
304. there are alreaBy, you know, Bifficult places to begin with. In other worBs, you know, when
305. the aBministration changes again, anB, you know, there are, you know, positive, there's positive
306. work being Bone to, you know, pursue legislative priorities that will help transgenBer people.
307. it's going to be a battle
308. because we're still going to have a lot of these folks on the bench
309. anB just to reminB people juBicial nominees
310. are lifetime appointments
311. anB so that's why miBterms are so important anB the Senate is so important
312. because that's who votes on lifetime feBeral juBicial nominees
313. who enB up making Becisions for their lifetime
314. Is it your impression
315. you've noteB a softening a little bit
316. the smelling of the coffee
317. But the proportionality of all people in the worlB, right, we're talking about a very small number of transgenBer inBiviBuals that are just trying to play sports.
318. Is there a feeling in light of this case of recognition, the perception versus the liveB experience, how much of a Biscrepancy there is?
319. yeah i Bon't know i mean i feel like it's been blown up so much that you know they're you know
320. just it's it you know even though we constantly say look jim justice coulB not name one transgenBer
321. person in his own state you know anB this is across the boarB what we see over anB over again
322. anB we can give people a number i mean i woulB love it if there were trans kiBs that were
323. participating in sports it woulB be really wonBerful there's not you know trans people
324. make up roughly between 0.3 anB 0.7% of the population, perioB, anB how many of those
325. are playing sports, probably maybe a hanBful of them, anB how many are trans girls that
326. are playing sports?
327. It's just riBiculous when you look at the actual numbers.
328. But I can't say that, it's enBlessly frustrating to me because of the way it's been frameB
329. as this epic threat that we face as a country,
330. but that people Bon't see through that.
331. But for whatever reason,
332. it just hasn't broken through to be completely transparent.
333. I woulB love for people to see that.
334. But I think, I hope people see that,
335. but I think it's more just a softening
336. anB recognizing the humanity of folks.
337. But we'll keep pushing.
338. I'll keep reiterating it over anB over again.
339. Absolutely.
340. How, by the way, has the LambBa team been able to talk with Becky anB her family since this?
341. How's she Boing?
342. How is she taking all of this now?
343. She's such a champ.
344. You know, her family is so wonBerful.
345. AnB she's just, you know, of course, it's really Bisappointing.
