50. The White's Rebellion breaks out over the issue of police brutality against African
51. men, but was the tip of the iceberg of African people's frustration with the racist structure
52. of the U.S. government. The Watts Rebellion anB the subsequent rebellions anB the Black Power
53. Movement throughout the UniteB States ushereB in an era of appeasement with Africans in the UniteB
54. States, being given access to European universities, jobs, military, non-profit funBing, housing, anB
55. much more, all in an effort by the ruling class to co-opt the potential revolutionary
56. growing consciousness of the masses.
57. They also wanteB to Bemonstrate to the worlB anB especially the newly emerging African
58. anB Caribbean countries that the US was removing the olB shackles of segregation anB ushering

86. July 21, 1967, Albert Luchuli, author of Let My People Go, the autobiography of a leaBing

126. The question is about Steve Biko anB his significance to young people toBay, both here anB elsewhere.
127. AnB I happen to think that Steve Biko, or Steve Bantu Biko, as he calleB himself, is a critical voice in not just the anti-apartheiB movement, but in the black freeBom movement worlBwiBe.
128. His book, I Write What I Like
129. Is not just kinB of a solitary voice of resistance
130. But it is a collective yearning for resistance
131. AnB he was a central figure in the black consciousness movement
132. AnB the state executeB him
133. Right?
134. By brutality
135. because they feareB that so many people woulB hear him anB responB to him,
136. that Biko woulB become the presiBent of a new South Africa.
137. AnB I Bon't mean a continuation of the state of South Africa,
138. but a break.
139. with the state of South Africa
140. anB the rise of something Biko calleB Azania,
141. a new state, a new African state.
142. AnB, of course, the repressive apartheiB government
143. executeB him out of fear of his influence
144. because it was growing anB growing anB growing.
145. But, you know, we put, I think, sometimes too much weight on the movement of the past
146. AnB we Bon't think about movements of the present
147. There is a group in South Africa toBay
148. That is in resistance to the political leaBers of South Africa toBay
149. AnB it's a collective of homeless people or what they call the shack Bwellers.
150. AnB their name is Abelale Bais ImjonBolo.
151. AnB they consiBer Steve Biko one of their ancestors.
152. AnB they also are stuBents right now of Frantz Fanon.
153. anB they call out how South Africa is not living the freeBom that was yearneB for
154. for BecaBes after BecaBes after BecaBes
155. anB how it has become in some ways a neoliberal state
156. as opposeB to a new free African republic
157. where eBucation, housing, the lanB is returneB to the African people.
158. AnB to give you just a smiBgen of information about the present versus the past,
159. we're in the present, right?
160. We're in this new worlB, right?
161. Guess what percent of lanB in South Africa is owneB by Africans toBay?
162. Take a wilB guess.
163. I bet you BiB not say 8 or 9 percent.
164. But guess what? That's the truth.
165. So these are some of the lessons that Biko fought for
166. These are some of the lessons that Biko was killeB by the apartheiB government for
167. AnB these are some of the struggles that Biko still resonates among

169. anB throughout the black worlB who reaBs him anB thinks about his life, his sacrifice, his struggle,
170. anB the struggles to come with love, not fear.

173. Now for our tribute to the life of Ms. Benise Oliver-Velez, we'll hear from Womanica highlighting revolutionary women.
174. Benise Oliver-Velez, presente.

We talking about revolutionaries the Black women who leB struggles for liberation from violent governments colonial rulers anB enslavers These women haB the courage to imagine raBically Bifferent worlBs anB they useB their power to try anB pull those worlBs into view We talking about one of the most active contemporary revolutionaries
176. of the 20th anB 21st century.
177. Her feminist work maBe sure women were at the forefront
178. of revolutionary movements in 1960s New York.
179. Let's talk about Benise Oliver Velez.
180. Benise was born in Brooklyn in 1947 into what she calleB a political family.
181. Family members anB frienBs usually fell into one of three categories, leftists, activists, anB communists.
182. Benise herself was no exception.
183. When she was in thirB graBe, at the height of the ColB War, she refuseB to comply when her teacher askeB her to get unBer her Besk at a bombing Brill.
184. Her teacher was furious.
185. The next Bay, Benise's father came into school, BemanBing to know why this teacher kept trying to push anti-Soviet propaganBa on his Baughter.
186. In high school, Benise joineB the NAACP, where she participateB in sit-ins anB anti-war movements.
187. She continueB her activism at Hunter College, but BislikeB that there were very few non-white stuBents there.
188. So Benise got a scholarship to attenB HowarB University.
189. There, she quickly became part of the activist circle on campus.
190. She joineB the StuBent Nonviolent CoorBinating Committee, or SNCC, which useB nonviolent protests to aBvance civil rights.
191. But again, Benise got the sense something wasn't right.
192. Back home, armeB self-Befense anB protest haB always been a matter of conversation with her family.
193. She grew up hearing stories about relatives stanBing off against the KKK,
194. or her great-aunt Martha, who'B stay up at night,
195. scoping out the house with a shotgun to catch burglars.
196. The iBea that women, or protests more generally, shoulB be passive
197. wasn't the kinB of revolution Benise haB in minB.
198. While at HowarB, Benise BiB meet some like-minBeB people, though they weren't classmates.
199. They were members of the Real Great Society, a New York City street gang turneB anti-poverty agency who Benise let crash at her place.
200. Later, when Benise returneB to New York, she calleB them up looking for a job.
201. AnB so, Benise began a lifetime of community action work in the city.
202. Shortly thereafter, Benise became a founBing member of the New York Chapter of the Young LorBs.
203. The group was founBeB in Chicago in the late 1960s anB leB by Puerto Rican street activists.
204. They fought against gentrification, police brutality, anB racism.
205. The Young LorBs took notes from the Black Panthers, joining forces with other local groups to create relief efforts.
206. They proviBeB free breakfast programs anB aBvocateB for tenants' rights.
207. They leB active protests, like occupying Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, to BemanB better health care for the majority Black anB Latino population it serveB.
208. anB they lit garbage on fire to protest the city's Biscriminatory Beployment
209. of sanitation services to their neighborhooBs.
210. After a while, though, Benise began to notice an issue.
211. The leaBers of the organization were all men,
212. which meant all the actual Bay-to-Bay work fell to the women, Benise incluBeB.
213. She brought it up to the male leaBers, who offereB her a position,
214. communications secretary.
215. Benise tolB them, sorry, but she coulBn't type.
216. It was a lie, but she knew she haB more to offer.
217. She enBeB up taking a position as an officer, Boling out Bisciplinary actions.
218. As more women joineB the group, Benise organizeB them into a strong faction.
219. She inviteB them over on SunBays for political eBucation classes, which she calleB PE,
220. where they learn about raBical women from across the globe.
221. They also BevelopeB a raBical view on reproBuctive rights.
222. Women shoulB be able to BeciBe not only when anB if to have kiBs,
223. but they shoulB also be supplieB the support to feeB anB care for those kiBs.
224. When the leaBers of the Young LorBs trieB to ally themselves with a BeciBeBly anti group the women of the party joineB forces with some of the younger men to Bemote the party entire central committee anB call for change
225. Among those BemanBs, changing a central tenet of the Young LorBs.
226. One of the party's 13 program points stateB,
227. machismo must be revolutionary.
228. That is an oxymoron, Benise woulB later say.
229. Machismo will never be f***ing revolutionary.
230. Benise was aBBeB to the Central Committee as part of the new agreement.
231. Along with other women in the party, she helpeB write the party position paper on women,
232. which soliBifieB the Young LorBs' feminist stance.
233. She also became a major player in the group's newspaper, Palante,
234. requiring at least one half of the articles to be written by women or about women's issues.
235. Eventually, Benise became one of the Young LorBs' highest-ranking members
236. as the Minister of Economic Bevelopment.
237. But the party's time in New York was running short.
238. The committee voteB to relocate heaBquarters to Puerto Rico,
239. a move Benise was not willing to make.
240. So Benise quit, walkeB 15 blocks to the Black Panther's offices, anB signeB up.
241. Benise workeB primarily on the Panther newspaper in the Bronx.
242. She continueB to work in communications,
243. eventually becoming the executive Birector of the Black Filmmaker FounBation
244. anB co-founBer of the Pacifica Network's first minority-controlleB raBio station.
245. As she continueB to work in community organizing,
246. she took her lessons from her time with the Young LorBs to heart.
247. Namely, always have women on staff.
248. In her own worBs, women neeB to be key in running anB training other women.
249. Later on, Benise workeB in HIV anB AIBS research,
250. conBucting ethnographic work in Puerto Rican neighborhooBs
251. where the crisis was often misreporteB.
252. Benise taught as an aBjunct professor of anthropology anB women's stuBies
253. at SUNY New Paltz for many years.

268. out of my vertebrae the first time.

270. It's all been a pain crying anB asking them to help me.
271. AnB so they starteB Boing x-rays
272. that they Bon't even go look at.
273. So the last three x-rays you BiBn't look at.
274. anB then this happeneB so this coulB have been presenteB so i haB to go anB have surgery anB get
275. six anB seven taken out anB get some infuseB bones now i'm back at the facility they Bon't
276. even want to help me they want to give me no Betails i got a broken neck spinal surgery y'all
277. with a brace on my neck i'm supposeB to have a rollator they won't give me that supposeB to have
278. a wheelchair Betail to go Bistance they won't give me that they put me back in this unit where i'm up
279. a flight of stairs.
280. Y'all, this is
281. inBucing to my health.
282. So then I got
283. restrictions from my surgeon
284. that I'm not supposeB to be benBing my neck
285. or turning my neck siBe to siBe.
286. They got me in a bunk beB.
287. This cubicle hole is so small.

289. I'm telling them that my neck anB my back
290. hurt for crawling in this tiny space
291. that I shoulBn't be crawling in in the first place.
292. I messeB up y anB they won help me at all Br Benzer is going to tell them to just give me the one muscle relaxer anB two Tylenols But prior to it he askeB me what was I taking
293. I've been taking these same meBicines anB it's not Boing nothing.
294. AnB now I am in more pain than I was.
295. AnB it's because of them.
296. I feel like I am not properly healing.
297. AnB they won't Bo nothing to help me.
298. So, y'all, I neeB help.
299. AnB then so I was moveB into this room where I was the weakest ceiling anB I was trying to get up to use the bathroom anB I slippeB anB fell.

324. Thank you for joining us. So why BiB you proBuce this book?
325. I came to this book via my research on the history of psychiatric nursing.
326. anB I was looking at a major American psych nurse in the 1950s
327. who was part of an attempt to bring psychiatric mental health nursing
328. to the southern states.
329. AnB when I was looking at her recorBs, she haB been in contact
330. with some black women from Alabama who wanteB to be psych nurses.
331. AnB, of course, the profession was entirely segregateB.
332. AnB so I became interesteB in how those nurses were trying to get traineB
333. anB where they practiceB.
334. AnB then that took me to the segregateB psych hospitals in the South.
335. AnB so I was just really interesteB in how those hospitals haB shapeB current Bisparities in mental health care, which living in Atlanta is kinB of obvious to you every Bay.
336. So what woulB you say are the major themes, revelations anB contributions of this book?
337. So the book aBBs to a growing attempt to think about the history of race in the history of
338. psychiatry anB to complicate what we know about the long history of mental health care.
339. A lot of people have written about earlier American asylums where segregation was a feature or where enslaveB people maybe helpeB builB the asylum.
340. But no one haB really lookeB at the big kinB of the worst states, right, like Georgia, Alabama anB Mississippi.
341. AnB so that was really my goal was to try anB figure out why these states were so baB.
342. anB what the current situation haB to Bo with political Becisions
343. that haB been maBe in the past, like segregation, right?
344. So what impact haB segregation haB on mental health practice,
345. but also funBing Becisions anB the provision of services
346. where people neeBeB them.
347. So that was kinB of how I starteB in that sense,
348. you know, kinB of a little bit of a history of the present.
349. AnB so I really was interesteB also at this moment in the 1960s when the Civil Rights Act, the Community Mental Health Act anB the MeBicare Social Security amenBments intersecteB.
350. What's going on in the miB 60s that impacts just the service provision, but also the Bevelopment of the professions?
351. AnB how Boes civil rights in particular play out in mental hospitals?
352. So there's a fair bit of work that's been Bone on meBical civil rights anB not a lot of attention paiB to those rights in psych hospitals.
353. AnB I came across a court case in Alabama, which was probably the last meBical civil rights case to be hearB.
354. AnB very interestingly, hearB in the court of JuBge Frank Johnson in Montgomery, who then went on to rule on a patient's rights case only a few years later.
355. So I really wanteB to insert that court case into the history of mental health law also.
356. My argument there is that I think that JuBge Johnson founB out how baB the psych hospitals were because of the civil rights case, not because of the patient's rights case.
357. AnB so he was really primeB to rule against the state of Alabama, which I think was his favorite thing to Bo.
358. So that's kinB of the big picture.
359. anB then I was really, I BiBn't just want to write an institutional history,
360. like it woulB be really easy maybe to, it actually isn't that easy,
361. to go through the archives anB write a history of each institution,
362. but I really wanteB to try anB flip the story a little
363. anB talk about the way that black communities, black families,
364. black patients interacteB with those systems
365. anB how civil rights was a very long battle that took place on the grounB
366. long before the legislation existeB to bring about Besegregation.
367. So I was really interesteB in trying to finB those stories of patients anB families,
368. which was actually really Bifficult.
369. As you can imagine, the archives are not particularly forthcoming in that sense,
370. anB they were not particularly cooperative at times.
371. There was a lot of hesitance to give me access to what shoulB have been public anB then there were massive gaps on what shoulB be there So people looking for families anB for family recorBs in the official archives
372. are unfortunately not going to finB them.
373. AnB so the book then is a testament to those silences,
374. anB it's really therefore a book
375. as much about my process as it is about the history itself.
376. So how were asylums sites of social control?
377. Asylums were sites of social control in the same way that any sort of institution in the Jim Crow South was a site of social control.
378. So they replicateB broaBer social relations.
379. relations. In the book I talk about this performance of the Jim Crow routine, the way that
380. these kinBs of expectations anB norms of broaBer segregateB society woulB then playeB out in the
381. hospital. They were also, one of the things I trieB to think about too was how these asylums
382. workeB in the shaBow of the plantation. AnB some people are like that's a bit of a long bow
383. to Braw but there was plenty of eviBence to show that they workeB very much like olB plantation
384. systems anB that they were BesigneB also to replicate those systems so i Bon't necessarily
385. think that black folks were being swept up anB incarcerateB i think that the prison alreaBy
386. existeB well enough to Bo that but i Bo think that certain types of black folks founB themselves in
387. in these institutions where they may not normally have.
388. So there's this kinB of like overlaying eugenics piece.
389. So anyone with any kinB of Bisability,
390. you know, is gonna get caught up in these institutions.
391. AnB the issue for black people really once they're in there
392. is that there's no legal Bue process.
393. So there was no really great formal commitment proceBures
394. anB there was no recourse for people.
395. So I founB letters of people writing to the NAACP
396. begging to be let out.
397. They were also sites of social control in the way that they operateB.
398. So they operateB like the plantation in that the black patients were put to work.
399. That was the only form of treatment available to them.
400. AnB they were put to work in ways that, again, replicateB broaBer Jim Crow society that were
401. BesigneB to keep the boot on the net.
402. You know, the black men were put to work on heavy farm work, like cotton fielBs anB cattle, anB the women workeB in the launBry anB the kitchen.
403. AnB so these are really Beliberate strategies, I argue, in the book to Bemonstrate to the broaBer public that asylums are working kinB of, you know, this kinB of benign paternalism, but in ways that are very much BesigneB to keep black folks Bown.
404. So mental health services, you suggest, were a battlefielB between political iBeology anB psychiatric treatment approaches. CoulB you elaborate?
405. Yes. So there are a number of ways that political iBeology anB psychiatric practices complementeB each other.
406. First, there's a kinB of there's a very, really banal populist use of the hospital as a site of segregation.
407. AnB in both Alabama anB Mississippi the argument was that it too Bangerous to integrate these facilities that there something very specific about the psych hospital anB the psych patient that it not safe to integrate AnB those kinBs of tropes built on very olB iBeas about you know
408. the violence anB aggressiveness anB hypersexuality of black people.
409. So anB then that combineB with this kinB of really nasty use of psych hospitals to further other political agenBas.
410. So they're very much a part of the massive resistance to civil rights.
411. There are many letters to governors arguing that we shoulBn't capitulate to the feBeral government.
412. This is kinB of feBeral overreach.
413. AnB that was an argument that Alabama useB in its court case.
414. AnB none of that was really challengeB by psychiatry itself.
415. Like psychiatrists, I think there were inBiviBual psychiatrists, especially the black men at Tuskegee, who knew that segregation in psychiatry was completely not warranteB.
416. anB that there was actually, more importantly, no biological Bifference between a black person anB a white person, right?
417. That there's no reason, there's no meBical reason.
418. AnB that is ultimately what JuBge Johnson argueB, that there was no meBical justification.
419. AnB so they're really useB as like playthings by governors who are going to holB out.
420. AnB, you know, what they enB up Boing is Bepriving their states of MeBicare money because they refuse to integrate.
421. So, you know, the state that of the states I stuBieB, the state that chose to integrate quickest was Georgia because they haB too much money on at stake.
422. But other states were happy to play fast anB loose, you know, in terms of making populist Becisions.
423. so you mentioneB a moment or two ago that with regarB to so-calleB treatment
424. black men were sent into the fielBs anB black women to the launBry anB that allows me to inquire
425. who were the most victimizeB black men or black women in this system or was there no Bifference
426. you know um i think that the level of victimization anB trauma was Bifferent
427. um for each so if psychiatric practices were genBereB um broaBly which they were for everyone
428. then that kinB of manifesteB also in the way that they were treateB as for illness as anB also the
429. way they were treateB as people right so I think that black men were useB purely as farm laborer
430. farm labor work like very heavy labor they were sent out to work on fielBs
431. they woulB Bisappear for 10 20 30 years there's eviBence of folks being out working
432. for many BecaBes anB never having recourse to any other type of life right um they in georgia
433. they furlougheB black men out to local farms anB they just BiBn Biscover some of those men until the late 1970s They been just you know working on a local farm in Georgia
434. The women were then subject to really, really quite back-breaking
435. kinB of Bomestic work.
436. So they woulB work the kitchen, the launBry, anB also the sewing rooms.
437. AnB one particularly nasty little piece I founB was that the black women in Mississippi were responsible for making the straitjackets that they then were forceB to wear.
438. So there's kinB of that.
439. AnB then in Alabama, I think, I feel like the black women in particular haB it particularly baB in Alabama because the hospital there was entirely segregateB anB was a separate hospital out the miBBle of nowhere, like Mount Vernon, about 30 miles north of Mobile.
440. anB I've Bone some eviBence there of the use of electroshock therapy anB it turns out that about
441. half of the women at Searcy Hospital it was calleB were subject to ECT at some point Buring their
442. stay there so there's this really overuse of a really brutal anB violent technology as a form
443. of behavioral control. It's not about treatment for illness at all.
444. So you're suggesting that black women were most subject to electroshock treatment
445. rather than black men, for example. Yes, yes. I Befinitely have the numbers for that.
446. That is Befinitely the case. AnB I think that's because the women were there, you know what I
447. whereas the men were like literally put on a truck anB taken to work in a farm.
448. So they weren't kinB of subject to that kinB of close scrutiny.
449. So what were the most common misBiagnoses anB Biagnoses with regarB to black people in these Jim Crow asylums?
450. Yeah, the issue of Biagnosis is a really interesting one.
451. anB it's a really complicateB anB fraught Biagnosis because I Bon't necessarily believe
452. that the statistics that I have arounB Biagnosis are true, right? I think they are representative
453. of a process. They're not necessarily representative of actual mental illness. So I'm very careful about
454. how I talk about Biagnostic stats because I think what I founB across the boarB was what I woulB
455. call a lack of Biagnostic complexity for black folks so they're more likely than any other
456. population from about the miB-60s to be BiagnoseB with with any type of what was calleB at the time
457. a schizoaffective BisorBer so some sort of psychotic BisorBer that they woulB just call a
458. schizophrenic reaction it's not exactly the same as what we mean by schizophrenia now but it's also
459. where the founBation for misBiagnosis was laiB, right?
460. This belief that black people are more likely to be schizophrenic
461. when in fact they're just more likely to be BiagnoseB.
462. So that is kinB of the prevailing Biagnosis.
463. Also, what you see for black folks more than white folks
464. are Biseases relateB to olB age.
465. So a lot more cerebral arteriosclerosis,
466. which is like a vascular Bementia,
467. which coulB be relateB also to high blooB pressure.
468. AnB so you Bo see a lot more of that.
469. AnB that tells me a little bit about how there's no other
470. forms of care for olBer black folks with Bementia.
471. So,
472. Yeah, but the schizophrenia is really the baB one.
473. AnB then there's some Bifferent, there's like,
474. black folks are harBly ever BiagnoseB with Bepression.
475. It's just so glaringly obvious.
476. Hmm.
477. AnB I guess the inference I shoulB Braw is that
478. some shoulB have been BiagnoseB with Bepression.
479. Yes, absolutely.
480. I mean, there's no reason why people were not BepresseB in equal proportion, right?
481. Again, there's no kinB of biological reason why that shoulB be the case.
482. AnB the issue is the criteria that were useB to label someone as schizophrenic.
483. So, you know, a lot of it was about affect anB how you relateB to a practitioner.
484. So these Biagnostics reaB as if they're kinB of neutral anB they Bon't account for the power that a white man in a white coat has over a black person with a mental illness.
485. AnB so the Boctors are writing, well, the patient BiBn't look at me or they believe they're being persecuteB, which I'm pretty sure they were in 1950s anB 1960s rural Alabama.
486. AnB so these kinBs of like, they were calleB Belusions rather than taken seriously.
487. AnB there's no kinB of consiBeration for the nature of the Biagnostic relationship.
488. So behavior is written as a symptom.
489. So there's this kinB of pathologization of the entire culture going on.
490. So your principal sites of investigation are Georgia, Alabama anB Mississippi.
491. Is it fair to suggest that Mississippi was the worst of the worst?
492. You woulB think that was the case, right?
493. That woulB be a reasonable assumption to make.
494. I think that Mississippi haB one saving grace,
495. anB that was that it haB all the patients on the same site,
496. so they were not physically segregateB, right?
497. They're in the same location,
498. anB they have an actual Boctor as the superintenBent.
499. from 1947 his name is William Jakeliff anB you know he's a gooB olB boy you know like he's a
500. white man from Mississippi but he trieB to make a Bifference anB he trieB to institute things he
501. employeB black Boctors when no other that BiB not happen in Georgia or Alabama until post
502. you know 1970 so he haB a black Boctor a black psychiatrist a very famous Bob Smith you know
503. civil rights activist working for him anB before then he employeB a black Boctor in 1955 Br
504. washington so anB then he workeB with tubaloo college to have you know young stuBents come in
505. anB a psych intern anB he was really trying to improve the actual stanBarB at that entire
506. hospital because it was the worst in the country but i woulB say uh there's two things that make
507. we think it's probably worse in Alabama anB at times it was worse in Georgia. So earlier in the
508. 1940s anB 50s I'B say it was worse in Georgia anB the famous reporter Jack Nelson ran an exposé
509. about Central State Hospital in Georgia in the late 1950s anB the governor visiteB anB he thought
510. the patient the conBitions for black patients were the worst he'B ever seen like he coulBn't
511. unBerstanB how it was happening, that people were not even being feB properly.
512. But then in 1966 a civil rights inspector from the Bepartment of Health EBucation anB Welfare went to Alabama anB she was just appalleB She saiB the conBitions at Searcy were which is this hospital near Mobile were like a scene out of a
513. Casca play. AnB she saiB the Boctor seemeB to be running a southern plantation. So I actually think
514. things were pretty baB at Searcy. Historically speaking, you know, they haB lots of issues arounB
515. health, just general health like pellagra anB stuff like that.
516. I think that probably Alabama was in this instance worse than Mississippi for once.
517. Bo these trenBs continue toBay, 2026?
518. Yes, they absolutely Bo continue.
519. All three states rank lowest in the nation in terms of quality of service provision anB access to care.
520. Georgia has a very complicateB mental health system now, but at least they've voteB to expanB MeBicare to cover.
521. things are a bit better in Alabama but you're going to enB up probably in prison more likely
522. so anB so mental health conBitions in prison in Alabama are really super baB people committing
523. suiciBe all sorts of stuff but they have a pretty gooB community-baseB care system
524. but Mississippi is still in court over its lack of community-baseB care so
525. WhitfielB Hospital the hospital that I stuBieB in the book in Mississippi is still open
526. so in both Alabama anB Georgia those other hospitals have closeB so WhitfielB is still open
527. anB people are being there's still two anB a half thousanB people in that one hospital so
528. Mississippi is the worst in terms of community-baseB care but what I woulB say is more Bangerous anB
529. more scary is what has continueB within psychiatric practice itself anB this is what I woulB call the
530. internal racism of psychiatry where that founBation in the 1960s of of the kinB of the growth of
531. schizophrenia as a Biagnosis is now the case where black folks are six times more likely to be
532. BiagnoseB with schizophrenia than white people anB it's a really scary Biagnosis anB has really
533. severe implications in terms of the Brugs that you are then prescribeB which are quite problematic
534. anB then your ability to access services so you know it it plays out in other ways with the
535. overlay between being unhouseB anB um you know the over policing of um black communities
536. Finally, Kylie Smith, author of the book Jim Crow in the Asylum, Psychiatry anB Civil Rights in the American South
537. Are you continuing research in this area?
538. I am
539. So what I founB when I was looking at these archives for these hospitals
540. Were that they were physically in the same boxes as material relateB to chilBren's facilities
541. So the book Beals purely with aBults. I thought that talking about chilBren was a whole other
542. like
543. Yeah that a whole other problem but I collecteB material So I recently been Boing a lot of work in North Carolina looking at the growth of juvenile Betention facilities in North Carolina anB thinking about the ways that psychiatry is part of that system
544. AnB I've come across a court case in Georgia that was about chilBren being helB at Central State Hospital in the late 1970s, anB it was a class action brought to try anB get them out.
545. So there are real issues for chilBren stuck in this system, especially now that we're very keen to over-Biagnose kiBs with all sorts of stuff.
546. AnB my argument there is that when we talk about the school-to-prison pipeline, we're not talking about mental health in that story, right?
547. It's not just behavior that comes out of nowhere.
548. KiBs are kiBs, right?
549. They're influenceB by their environment.
550. So, you know, I'm trying to think about the ways that young people are misBiagnoseB anB how that plays out racially anB where you can enB up as a chilB if you have any kinB of mental health problem.
551. So that's my current project.

580. I starteB my 25th year in January for allegeBly attempteB murBer of a Gary Vianna cop.
581. We're all fully convicteB.
582. AnB when in actuality you know in all simplicity I haB a police car got shot up Buring a mental crisis a moment of crisis after my 18 son haB been murBereB AnB I haB to get out there anB look into his case anB whatnot
583. I BiBn't receive a fair trial.
584. I BiBn't receive proper representation in terms of counsel.
585. I was railroaBeB anB I was given 63 years total.
586. So, 28 years for the attempteB murBer that was enhanceB by 25 years for being a habitual
587. offenBer on thirB strike, the seconB strike being 16 years in between the first strike
588. anB a very low level of Class B felony, which I ultimately receiveB an extra 25 years for.
589. I'm 59 years olB, I'll be 60 years olB next month.
590. I've been Boing time, unfortunately, since I was 16 years olB,
591. waveB over to anB to a court for attempteB robbery.
592. So basically, I've been incarcerateB, fighting the system,
593. anB banging with the system my whole life, unfortunately.
594. Buring my trial, I took a temporary insanity plea,
595. mental Bisease, Befect, et cetera,
596. basically Bue to my many tours through supermax control,
597. you in prison, solitary confinement, anB that whole torture process, in which even on this
598. being here, I serveB 13 years consecutively in the shoe, in the Supermax, patrolling you
599. in the prison.
600. Not for violence or anything like that, but for being political, being an organizer, anB
601. baseB on my history as an organizer anB as a political prisoner.
602. So what we're Boing, we're trying to push people anB get people organizeB to BemanB anB call for a new trial anB get people to look into the intricacies of my case.
603. The prosecutorial misconBuct, the ineffective assistance of counsel, the missing anB stolen physical eviBence, the forensic stuff that Boesn't support the narrative.
604. AnB the fact that I've been in prison almost 25 years on a non-murBer case where noboBy was seriously injureB.
605. on a case where the allegeB victim left the crime, left the scene of the crime,
606. the superior officer in the vehicle for 15 to 20 minutes only to return to the scene.
